- Sony reportedly cuts PS5 production again as chip shortages and shipment issues bite
-
according to Bloomberg. The company has reportedly cut its previous production forecast of 16 million down to 15 million
Save you a click. Only cut by 6%.
ID: hk7aqh3ID: hk7g16fProduction ≠ sales. First paragraph of the story:
Sony's PlayStation 5 may not be able to beat the PS4's first year sales record due to an ongoing component shortage, according to Bloomberg. The company has reportedly cut its previous production forecast of 16 million down to 15 million, putting its target of 14.8 million PS5 sales by March in jeopardy, if the report is accurate. It also makes a bad situation worse in terms of consumers being able to pick up a PS5 over the holidays
Producing 16 million consoles isn’t the same as immediately having 16 million consoles ready for sale. Still have to distribute them to retailers. They have a thinner margin for hitting their target now
ID: hk8rw7gIt is typical Bloomberg clickbait garbage.
Bloomberg literally claims Sony will be able to ship as many PS5s this FY as Sony said they will ship, but is misrepresenting it as a cut based on nebulous "internal" forecasts. Which is very likely completely manufactured by Bloomberg itself.
We saw Bloomberg's Japanese spirit animal, Nikkei, do the same thing with Switch. They claimed Nintendo's 6% forecast cut with their last quarterly earnings was actually 20% - based on Nikkei's own claim of what they thought Nintendo could produce.
This is what shitty sources do to get all those clicks from every lazy video game media outlet on the planet, since they are all aping Bloomberg's claims.
ID: hk81xdxOnly? Thats a million people who cant get one. Thats a lot of people.
ID: hk8l6yoI feel like by the time I get one, the PS6 will be around the corner.
ID: hk8glkqProbably me. 🙁
ID: hk99hu4"Only" 1 million fewer people who can get one
ID: hk8gkykOnly? As if it wasn't already almost impossible to get one before it became six percent more impossible.
ID: hk8dg7nWhat field do you work in where a 6% reduction in goods/services provided isn't actually a lot?
ID: hk960o91 million is still significant. I still can't get one where I live. 1 million would more than cover the demand here.

I honestly don't see this ending till late 2022 it'll be another fight for those who don't have one sucks
ID: hk7xooqThe chip shortage had been estimated to last until early 2023
ID: hk6t6loI heard chip shortages will continue until late 2022. If things don't go as predicted then this can easily continue into 2023.
ID: hk7xz21The version I heard is already early 2023.
2022 wasn’t even mentioned anymore.
ID: hk7d5rrI've been thinking of they'll extend the cross generation thing longer than usual.
ID: hk8gnslProbably not til 2023. There's a chip shortage and there's ongoing bidding wars for international shipping containers
ID: hk9d5rdThere goes my shipping container home....
ID: hk8zhecConsoles not sure but I work for an electrical distributor. I deal with a lot of Rockwell and Bussmann for automation equipment. We are expectinging these problems to last into 2023 before it starts to get better.
-
Fuuuuuuuccckkkkkk I’ll never get one. ☹️
-
Makes me glad I bit the bullet and got one a couple of months ago.
I had originally planned to trade in my One X and PS4 Pro at my local store to pay for the PS5 but ended up ordering online and selling the last gen boxes on Facebook.
Looks like I wouldn’t have been able to get one in store for some time.
ID: hk719aqMe too... I pre ordered it kinda of in impulse and that was my best choice
ID: hk7aianSame I got mine day 1 now I’ve been looking for series x lately no luck at all. Should’ve pre ordered it as well so I settled on a series s and it should be here today in time for halo Tuesday
ID: hk9eztxMe too. I lucked into an opportunity to buy a PS5, but seriously contemplated giving it a pass. I knew I had a large PS4 game backlog and didn't see any upcoming PS5 games that I felt I needed to play at launch. That second part is still true, but I never got the PS4 Pro so the PS5 is giving me an improvement on my PS4 games. Also shorter load times turned out to mean more to me than I thought they would. Finally, it's just nice to know I already have a PS5 now so don't have to worry about finding one when a PS5 game releases that I do feel is a must-play at launch.

and here i am hoping that they're currently trying to build up a stock pile so their big black friday event is "hey, you can actually buy a system" rather than offering a bundle like they usually do after a year.
-
Oh thank god I got one before it hit.
ID: hk8nzjzBack in early May I managed to get a PS5 and an Xbox Series X in a single order at Walmart, a day before I started a multi-month leave/sabbatical from work. I still have no idea how I managed to get the stars to align like that, but I am incredibly thankful for it.
ID: hk8g31gSame. I honestly wasn’t really in the market for a game console but got addicted to the hunt. Got my hands on one in March and I’m glad I did. Been a lifesaver when I’m stuck inside.
-
Remember when people thought the shortage would end by March 2021? I 'member.
ID: hk7schhmarch 21? that‘s like 2 years ago isn‘t it?
ID: hk8cmbm5 actually.

I think this console generation will be longer than the previous ones because of this "slow" start caused by the pandemic.
So not the normal 6-7 years, my bet would be 8 years, maybe even 9.
ID: hk7wezcThe life of thw console is not really like “let’s make a console for 6 years before we make the next one”, more around “can we make a new one with meaningful and substantial upgrade?”.
That said, I do believe this generation would last longer.
The next grade would likely to need a stable 60 FPS with 4k resolution for all games as a minimum, which for today is still an issue but shoudn’t be a problem in 6-7 years time.
If they can push for 120 frames even better.
-
For those who live near Fred Meyers, they are not selling them online, just shipping to stores and first come first serve. I was able to get one by getting up at 7AM on a Saturday and calling around and got lucky that a store near where I lived had gotten a shipment of 4 of them. I had been doing the online battle for about 2 months before realizing this and was able to get one within a week.

[Sony] had previously targeted more than 16 million units assembled in the year ending March... The company has now cut that number down to about 15 million.
...
Sony is far from alone in its struggle to navigate a clear path through shortages. Rival Nintendo Co. cut its full-year sales forecast for the Switch console family by 1.5 million units in early November, while Valve Corp. pushed back the debut of its Steam Deck portable console from December to February, citing global supply chain issues.
-
great its gonna be even harder to get....
-
also, I think the Engadget article is a rewrite of a Bloomberg article By Takashi Mochizuki
ps5 production cuts
but Takashi Mochizuki can be very hit or miss.
like "Sony Looks Past Middling PS5 Sales to Raise Profit Outlook"
'Nintendo Dips After New Switch Disappoints in Japan Debut'
ID: hk97s73To be fair I think he also bet big on the switch pro happening this year and that blew up so you never know I guess
-
I give up, never gonna get one.
-
Well, guess I’m never getting a ps5
-
Fuck it I'm buying a ps3.
-
This won't be ending any time soon much like Cex selling them just like scalpers at inflated prices.
ID: hk6p6b8Reminded me I hadn't looked for a while and they're £695 (boxed) - £665 (unboxed).
-
So thankful I was able to snag one before Christmas. After 6+ months of waking up at the crack of dawn for those 4am drops, I feel for everyone that’s still doing the same.
-
Fuck
-
For everyone in here still trying to secure a PS5, here is the tip that helped me the most:
An online drop from a retailer goes in waves. So if you are there for the start of the drop and get a “no longer in stock” message when you first try to check out, keep trying every 5 - 10 minutes for the next hour at least. I secured my PS5 45 minutes after a Walmart drop started after persisting through several sold out messages.
Other than that, make a Twitter account, get on Discord, and closely follow the people who are posting when drops will happen. Godspeed lads.
-
Glad I got a launch pre-order in. Only problem I have had was in Godfall, the game would crash unless I completely restarted the PS5 every couple hours.
COVID really hit the world hard. For those of you in the USA, Congress is working on the Endless Frontiers bill. It passed the Senate and is working it's way through the House. This is a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing aupply chain issues and investing in American manufacturing (including the chips). This is completely separate from the very publicized infrastructure bills being passed/debated on.
While it won't help immediately this could well mitigate future shortages. Shooting your Representative an email or call to express support doesn't hurt.
-
These stories are pointless. Sony is making as many consoles as they can. Period.
Who cares if they don't meet the projection (guess) they had made. -
I've been wanting to buy a Ps5 for a year now, but because of supply and scalper issues, have been unable to. This only further confirms I may never actually get one until the next generation. If only Sony would just have their games also come out on pc as well as Ps5...
-
I don't even care anymore. I'm actually more interested in finding an OLED Switch (but it seems just as unlikely at this point)

What's confusing is that Sony's public forecast has been 14,8 million PS5 sold for this fiscal year. So where does this 16 million comes from ?
