- Sony’s Firesprite takes over Twisted Metal, as Motorstorm director is hired
-
You had me at MotorStorm.

it’s worth noting that Lucid and Firesprite are located barely 15 minutes from each other in Liverpool, UK – and there’s now evidence of staff moving over.
Lucid acquisition/merger incoming?
Edit: Sony XDev are also relocating to a refurbished building near the Liverpool waterfront. 20 minute walk between all 3. A real Psygnosis nexus.
ID: hsdt1n6Firesprite already acquired 1 studio this year since Sony bought them so wouldn’t be out of the question.
ID: hsdtjacI mean, possible for Firesprite to get them as a support studio, like they did Fabrik.
ID: hse8g99Is Fabrik a support studio? Felt like Firesprite 2.0
ID: hsdt02iWhy buy the developer when the staff can just be hired? It would be an unnecessary expense.
ID: hsdu6pjAvalanche Studios recently opened a studio in Liverpool. Perhaps Sony are getting the band back together before rival groups are formed.
ID: hse4k6eSeems like maybe they're just trying to absorb the team without an expensive acquisition. Not like Lucid is some treasured developer. Most people would care that the employees have jobs then for lucid to exist.

I KNOW IM SO FUCKING HAPPY IM CRYING

The dev moving from Lucid to Firesprite, Matt Southern, seems to have come out of game director retirement with this project. His last directorial role was MotorStorm RC (and before that he became director for MS Apocalypse). He didn't direct or was even part of the lead design for Destruction Allstars.

huge potential with this studio. clearly Sony sees a lot the public hasn't gotten to see yet.
ID: hse4ajoI think while Xbox has made a lot horizontal acquisitions to get a wide range of content. Sony has quietly bought some teams that are going to make their dev cycles extremely efficient for what they're best at.
Support studios to help finish games
Things like firesprite to handle releases in time with their film push and vr spinoffs
Nixxes for pc ports to bring more focus back to their games
Vertical acquisitions while their big AAAA studios have been quietly expanding to 2-3 project teams for the last decade.
I would not be suprised if Sony cause the industry's concept of dev time to get pushed back or at least maintained at 4-5 years while games get even bigger.
ID: hse9fybDo you know how well the PC ports have been handled so far? Wouldn't be surprised if a bit more is acquired with PC/multiplatform in mind

Lucid history is Project Gotham and Blur under Bizarre. Firesprite is WipEout under Psygnosis.
I just want a sequel to Blur.
So the history and some staff involved, there could be people that were involved with developing Motorstorm, Driveclub, WipEout, Destruction Derby, Project Gotham, Blur, Rollcage.
That's a lot of car games.
ID: hseahtnWe could get something special.. but that's the idealist in me..
-
Wow. This sounds incredible. I've been craving more Motorsport after playing Dirt 5. Why are arcade rally games so resistant to nitrous?
Anyway, this could be an amazing game.
-
Sony is positioning Firesprite as Europe's Insomniac. They will probably pump up multiple games in the upcoming years.
ID: hse0sanDon't Firesprite have a lot of ex Psygnosis/ Studio Liverpool staff?
ID: hseg7pnYes, it says so in the article…

Seeing they hired motor storm director.
Twisted motorstorm.
Motor metal?
Twisted Storm: motor metal! With a kick ass hard rock soundtrack.
ID: hse0cwyTwisted Motorstorm: Black Apocalypse
ID: hse8pb3TM black and Motorstorm apocalypse had some dope soundtracks. Two of my favorite car games smashing into one game with those wild soundtracks would definitely be a preorder for me.
ID: hseiymsMotorstorm gameplay and physic with the craziness of Twisted Metal would be freaking amazing!
ID: hseeay0Look at the gameplay see why they close him
-
Lucid is still hiring for a PlayStation project with vehicles. Maybe a new Wipeout or Destruction Derby?
-
NateDrake on Resetera says the game was never in development at Lucid and was with Firesprite last year. Not sure how reliable he is but I think he is
Only knew Lucid wasn't involved and that Firesprite was the developer. And Firesprite has been working on the game since last year. They didn't get the game this month.
-
Oh that's awesome
-
Lets hope its good. An online character based battle royale with team deathmatch, deathmatch and lots of characters would kill it these days.
Edit - I was saying this assuming there would be a single player campaign. They were awesome back in the day. If they did online or skirmish games only it would be shit
ID: hsdom1zAs long as there is a solid single player.
ID: hsdpds6People seem to have forgotten that a huge part of the best Twisted Metal games was single-player and co-op PvE with boss fights and secrets and things that don't translate to the already over-stuffed PvP space. If they want to bring back older TM players, that's what's going to get my attention - I couldn't care less about battle royale or deathmatch.
That said, hard to imagine assembling a good single-player game in time, if this is meant to coincide with the show next year.
-
With Lucid, Fire Sprite, and Avalanche studios being compromised of mostly Wipeout, Motorstorm, PGR, Blur, and Driveclub alumni; could Sony be trying to bring back another exclusive racing studio to replace Evolution? If so, I'm extremely excited for it! They'd be an absolute arcade racing powerhouse!
-
I just got an erection
-
Hope they do justice to the franchise. Deflect bullets with axel’s abs once again.
-
firespeite has to be the best acquisition by sony since insomniac.
they're even bigger than insomniac when they got acquired. insomniac had 230 employees when they got acquired in 2019(they now have nearly 400) but firesprite has over 250.
ID: hsdtkcdLet’s hold and wait to see the quality of the output lol.
Persistence was a great game but they need a few more of those under their belt.
ID: hse35gaLet's wait and see before before making that bold statement. Sony acquired Housemarque and they shipped high quality, critically acclaimed game. (I just bought Returnal and played a little bit, my first impressions were really good. I can't wait to play more...) They acquired Bluepoint and they had developed great remakes as well...
-
This sounds promising. Now if we can only get another Motorstorm game added to the next gen I'll explode in my pants in joy!
-
I hope they create a decent single player experience, or at least some 'story mode' stuff that can be played co-op like Twisted Metal 2012.
Either way, I'm down for more Twisted Metal.
-
I loved motorstorm so i can get behind this move
-
God I miss TM 🙁
-
I thought firesprite was a VR studio
ID: hsdnsycThey do multiple things including VR. Sony likely expanding the studio quite a bit.
ID: hsdrlo4According to VGC
Firesprite has multiple projects in production, including the newly-announced PlayStation VR2 game... Prior to its acquisition, Firesprite had been recruiting for two titles: a multiplayer shooter and "a dark, narrative adventure with genre-defining goals".
ID: hsdnrhkWho said they aren’t, twisted metal vr 2024.
ID: hsdodoiThis would honestly be a perfect VR game. Racing games are some of the best for VR and twisted metal would be insane!
-
Lucid was never on TM jesus atleast recognize u were wrong and don’t twist everything for a fucking narrative
-
Make a new Motorsport instead 🙂
-
Huh sounds like they're taking Lucid developers, a studio that Sony doesn't own, and bringing them into Firesprite, a studio that they do own. Very weird business practice but Lucid might just go under soon anyway.
-
Can we get a new Motorstorm instead?

Motorstorm was so much fun. And I’m not even a racing video game person.
