Exclusive: 'Scarlet Nexus' devs share their vision of a "more mature" sequel
2 : Anonymous2022/01/29 12:22 ID: hupncvz

This game did a ton of things right but also a few things wrong so I'd be pretty pumped for a sequel. My biggest issue is being forced to play it twice with most of the two games being close to the same.

ID: huqb2gd

I like that about it. (Also NieR)

ID: husgp3t

Neir gave you completely different stories and several endings, with new main characters.

Not exactly comparable to Scarlet Nexus's dual perspective.

If you played ending A/B, you literally haven't finished Nier Automata. I mean you have if that's where you want to stop, but there's literally more to the main story than alternative perspectives in SN.

3 : Anonymous2022/01/29 06:57 ID: huoxzmg

Everyone was too polite to each other in their dialogs.

ID: huoyl52

Yeah, I feel like most Japanese games have supporting characters that are either switched to "non stop compliments" and "brooding insecure douche" with the odd smug pervert best friend and white bread main character as a special treat.

ID: hup865n

White bread main character.

That's the most fitting analogy for a JRPG main character I've ever read

ID: huoz3l3

It’s just unnatural when they’re too polite.

ID: huqa0on

Also either a tsundere or a clingy romantic type female love interest for the MC.

ID: huq8t7a

Yesss! Totally agree. I was like wtf is going on here? I thought they hated each other, they fight and try to kill each other. Then after its all done everyone is friends again and talking like it never happened. I was so confused.

ID: huqaera

honestly put me off the game. there was a point where the protagonists father is literally murdered by another main character but instead of trying to get justice, you’re speaking to them in a restaurant like 5 mins later. literally doesn’t make sense

4 : Anonymous2022/01/29 06:48 ID: huox7wa

i had fun with the game but also felt kinda burned out doing the tedious bond episodes; i love Persona games so love these in general but the Scarlet Nexus ones seemed quite lack luster especially during end game. Hoping that the next DLC they make is more game play not bond episodes like the first one

ID: hupf3d7

I think the problem with the bond episodes is they lack any sense of player iniative beyond levelling up their powers. Without even basic dialogue options to at least tailor your own dynamics with the characters, it falls short and means you're essentially watching skippable slideshows to level up your character.

Persona 5 never had much depth when it came to the dialogue options you were given in the bonding side activities, but it at least engaged you enough and felt like you were somewhat shaping the relationship you had with the characters.

ID: husfanq

Agree completely. I didn't even like Persona 5 from what I played, which is admittedly not much, but it didn't hook me so I returned it. But after two bond episodes I figure if I was going to do exactly what I just did, which is nothing while watching a cutscene... I'd just watch an anime. Scarlet Nexus somehow made spamming next and skip buttons seem more engaging.

So I recently finished FF7 remake having never played a FF game before (phenominally fantastic).

Saw this on sale and thought fuck yeah, this looks like it could be great.

I'm on Chapter 5 and already i'm just so uninterested in the story and the characters, that I feel like i'm playing just to get through it.

Combat mechanics are cool, but could've been built on A LOT more.

6 : Anonymous2022/01/29 17:56 ID: huqu3q8

Hell yess lets go! So happy if it gets a sequel

7 : Anonymous2022/01/29 06:38 ID: huowcrl

I respect Anabuki's pride in his work (he, or his account, has been engaging people consistently since before launch), and I think it shows in the game.

Super satisfying action and I really enjoyed the unhindered and unhinged "brainpunk" premise and especially enemy designs.

8 : Anonymous2022/01/29 07:59 ID: hup31pr

I don’t mind JRPG static profile pictures with dialogue, but I can’t handle it when that’s the ONLY thing on the screen à la visual novels. I was hoping I could watch the 3D characters animate in SOME way, like Persona 5 did. The combat was fun but the dialogue was such a slog I had to say goodbye after about 8 hours. I definitely see how it has an audience but sometimes those elements feel like shortcuts.

ID: huqbn67

Guess it's been awhile, but weren't most Persona 5 things just them standing or sitting?

ID: huqzp81

Or walking, all with the occasional gesture! But at least the screen still showed you the character models and the environment. In Scarlet Nexus the dialogue is usually fills the whole screen.

ID: hushfsv

Lest be honest SN was a visual novel that tried to blend gameplay very poorly..

A perfect example of this is Death End; Request, and a better one is Tales of Arise.

But SN has you effectively staring at static images for most of the game's dialoge in Unreal Engine 4.

Besides the bosses being borderline literal tanks, that really killed it for me. Feels like they went this way to extend playtime & rush development.

And SN isn't really a JRPG, it's more like an action RPG than anything.

9 : Anonymous2022/01/29 07:07 ID: huoyuxm

Maybe hire someone who knows how to create a map or a intriguing environment for a change. It was bad with Code Vein and it actually got worse with Scarlet Nexus.

ID: hupbs5i

Worse? No. But the level design does need significant improvement

ID: hushjl6

Gotta love walking through a Major Metro with literally no people there 24/7.

ID: hupdizf

At least the environments looked interesting sometimes in Code Vein. That's something.

10 : Anonymous2022/01/29 09:52 ID: hupbq68

I really liked this game. Far more unique than most of the jrpgs they released last year. It needs some work but it’s a brand new ip. And from what he’s saying the powers might interact with the environments, or when speaking with nPcs in the future. He’s a very self aware director from what I’ve seen here.

11 : Anonymous2022/01/29 09:48 ID: hupbfbf

Hmm, I'm almost done with my first playthrough with Yuito. I'm enjoying it. Combat really opens up once you can utilize your teammates powers in conjunction with your own. "More mature"? Not sure what that means from the developers perspective. Gemma's side quest storyline was a bit better and dark than expected.

12 : Anonymous2022/01/29 12:22 ID: hupndg4

I didn't think the game was bad but I didn't quite live up to my expectations.

13 : Anonymous2022/01/29 15:20 ID: huq78x6

Game has a good concept, art direction and the combat agency design was well done.

Story had good ideas and premises but the execution felt hampered by too much exposition and perhaps by a limited production value. I hope the sequel paces itself to have more slice-of-life gameplay.

14 : Anonymous2022/01/29 12:37 ID: huponof

so happy there is sequel coming

15 : Anonymous2022/01/29 10:15 ID: hupdfn8

Need more romance and SoL elements in the next one. Shame the anime was so ass. Game was second best of the year after tales

ID: huqdols

Scarlet Nexus has so much in common with the Tales game. A story that starts out well and becomes convoluted towards the end. The protagonists both male and female being so similar in personalities. Half assed bonding episodes at rest areas. A final boss who felt forced. My playing both games back to back highlighted the similarities more.

ID: huquukx

Thats because it was made by former Tales of Vesperia devs

ID: huqhwmw

Why does it need romance when Yuito is totally clueless about Hanabi?

ID: husijoo

That was the dumbest shit, but honestly i'm just glad she matured & seems ready to move onto better things than standing at Yuito's side.

ID: huq7ml4

Yeah I want more slice-of-life gameplay.

16 : Anonymous2022/01/29 06:54 ID: huoxoxo

I wanted to like this game, but the story, characters and world were utterly unremarkable.

ID: hur1ubp

Yeah, once it introduced time travel I decided I wasn’t gonna try too hard to follow the storyline.

ID: hupeb7t

Pretty much. Combat loop was fun i guess, but once i finished the guys story, i didnt bother with kasanes. Felt like a chore to do, and i honestly dont feel too bad not knowing the entire story

17 : Anonymous2022/01/29 07:28 ID: hup0il4

Was not a huge fan of this game. It felt like it was playing it too safe and just came off as ridiculous.

ID: hupdjyg

Condolences

18 : Anonymous2022/01/29 09:46 ID: hupb7dv

Well for me the plot went completely bonkers at the end. It's pretty common with JRPGs to have extremely ridiculous stories, but it's really hit or miss. For me was a complete miss for that. Combat was really cool and someone already said, the bonding episodes were extremely tedious.

19 : Anonymous2022/01/29 10:52 ID: hupg7xn

Im not an anime guy. Is this game good ? Even for someone like me ?

ID: huq7h67

The combat is undoubtedly solid. Story's execution (not the ideas or premise which are kinda cool actually) is iffy.

Usually for non-anime guys, if they want to try an anime game, I recommend them Persona 5.

20 : Anonymous2022/01/29 11:08 ID: huphg0v

Forgettable af

21 : Anonymous2022/01/29 10:59 ID: hupgq2d

Yes give me more!

22 : Anonymous2022/01/29 11:39 ID: hupjuaf

Man I was so disappointed in that game. It got such good reviews and it just didn’t live up to what the reviewers were saying at all. I am much more careful with my purchases now

23 : Anonymous2022/01/29 16:32 ID: huqhih3

That would be nice, I think. I enjoyed parts of what I played but the overly anime bullshit got to me.

24 : Anonymous2022/01/29 17:30 ID: huqq3bo

Combat is fantastic in this game, everything else is pretty boring.

25 : Anonymous2022/01/29 19:33 ID: hur8i1o

I want to like this game but the combat is so boring. I’ve tried on a few occasions to get back into it. Hopefully they do more if they make another

27 : Anonymous2022/01/29 20:42 ID: huril3y

I really wanted but really couldn't get into this, gave up after 6h. Just too different atmosphere betweens story trying to be serious and weird gifts and hookups with other side in some cafe just because. Huge discrepancy. Also i felt like i saw everything that gameplay has to offer or most of it and it was getting kinda boring. I see why this game can be liked, i certainly like art style and some gameplay elements, but am happy i got to try it in gamepass and did not spend any money.

28 : Anonymous2022/01/30 01:05 ID: husit8r
this
29 : Anonymous2022/01/30 09:34 ID: huu1nm6

I feel that weird disconnect is a thing in most anime

30 : Anonymous2022/01/30 02:00 ID: husq5qu

No spoilers but I felt like this game had a pretty clear setup for a sequel having played Kasane's route, and it seems like it's going to be waaaay cooler. The combat system was awesome and it's my favorite utilization of the PS5 controller thus far. The world building was great and they just need to make the character development do the same!

31 : Anonymous2022/01/30 08:04 ID: hutukrj

I loved everything about this game

32 : Anonymous2022/01/30 08:06 ID: hutus35

This game was a dope Gamepass add. Glad it helped them with exposure.

33 : Anonymous2022/01/29 10:35 ID: hupex2p

There is not a single thing about anime trash that is or can be "mature"
