They clearly used Haste during voice recording.

I think a lot of it came down to voice direction. From what I remember(could be wrong), the voice actors didn't do their lines together and were actually done from home. Auron, Rikku, and Wakka did sound pretty good though imo.

My favourite is when Tidus is talking to Jecht, and he says “Dad? ihateyou”
This is another good one too.

Yeah, so... FFX was Square's first foray into voice acting, and both the Japanese and English teams didn't really know what they were doing yet, in different ways.
The Japanese team hard-coded all of the voice recordings, to the point where the translation team had to match not only the exact duration, but also the exact file size, or else the game would straight up crash. This is why some lines in English are blatantly sped up, and others have the actors speaking unnaturally slow. Because they had to match the duration to the millisecond.
Further, the English voice actors were given their lines not only separately (as has been mentioned), but also without direction, and without context of what the scene was about, and the lines weren't even in order.
Frankly, it's a miracle that the dub is as good as it is.
ID: hw9lz13It's a real shame, because some of those voice actors are fantastic in other works. A few off the top of my head:
James Arnold Taylor is every Obi-Wan Kenobi outside of the movies. John DiMaggio is Bender "Bending" Rodriguez. Tom Kenny (Rin) is freaking SpongeBob.

As odd as the translation/voice acting is in this game, it's still one of the best FF games by far
ID: hw8nm3mStill love it.

Wish they'd have dumped a little more cash into the localization/voice acting. Still great tho not bad for their first voiced game.
ID: hw919uzThe VA is fine, but the lipsync is not
ID: hw9ggfqThey learned quick though, XII has phenomenal voice acting

Playing ffx right now. It certainly has very Speedracer-esque dialogue at times.

The line in JP was "Yuna to Isshoni Sa". Poor James only had a second to say his line lol.

I'm willing to bet the original Japanese was much shorter. Japanese is highly contextual and the concept of "with Yuna by my side" could've easily been conveyed with one word.
Regardless...I could hear this exact moment from this screenshot hahahah

Oh yes, to contrast with the “I want…….to ask you……….to be…my guardian”

Also the voice lines for the English dub had to fit into the original animations, which were done for Japanese. This particular scene is weird to be sped up because it’s just a Voiceover, but you can tell at some other points that they sped up the lines to fit the mouth movements and whatnot.
