After watching a lot of videos on HFW I was thinking about how many animators must have worked on this game to have so many high quality cutscenes even for minor quests and also how many artists they needed to produce so many incredibly detailed assets and in general how dense the world looks, then it kinda downed on me that HFW is probably the very first game from Sony born out of the massive growth of PS that has been going on for years now. In fact Guerrilla was probably the first of Sony’s first party studios to undergo that growth, expanding from 250 to 400 employees beginning in 2018. Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst have been talking about investing and doubling down hard on their studios since they came into their positions and I think that HFW shows the new base of what we can expect from PS and their blockbuster games.

If horizon is just the start I can only imagine how good the games will look at the end of the ps5's cycle
We had tlou 2 and GoT which both blew me away on the ps4 pro
I cant wait to see what these studios can do

It’s crazy what they did with such old hardware
ID: hx8lo91I just finished GoT on ps5 and I honestly would have believed it was made for next gen. It looks gorgeous, but perhaps even more impactful was how it might be the first fast travel I’ve used that actually feels fast. It was so much more enjoyable then back on ps4
ID: hx7vo88It's going to be fun to see what we will have in 5 years or so. Maybe much sooner than that.
Sometimes I wonder however, that these 1st party Studios are able to achieve this as they have the maximum resources made available made to them to reach this level of reality. I wonder how many devs can follow suit as we continue on in the generation?
ID: hx87v5tNot many. Especially because few devs/publishers have access to the PSS infrastructure, that goes way beyond the studios with stuff like ICE (hardware and tech), CSG (sound, graphic design and marketing) and VASG (art, animation, mocap, etc).
ID: hx8fbxuHorizon is also a PS4 game too so imagine a pure PS5 game at the end of the generation. We haven't really seen what the new gen can do.

Another thing which comes to mind is Malaysia Studio - which Sony opened in 2020 as a support studio for art & animation. Who knows what they have been providing support on since then, but along with the decision to buy Valkyrie Entertainment - it seems clear that Sony have been trying to expand internal support capacity for their first party.

Yeah for sure. I think the eventual 3rd game of the "Aloy Trilogy" (ps5 only) will be even more mind-blowing, not just graphically but in more terms of revolutionary game mechanics, immersion and animation smoothness.
Also considering that Guerilla games had moved offices several times in these last 4-5 years of HFW 's dev cycle due to this growth together with the restrictions of the historic center of Amsterdam does not have large buildings with the considerable electrical supply big game companies need for their servers, computers and what not. It was probably a real b**ch alongside the whole pandemic thing that other game companies have massively suffered from but still create a game this expansive with high fidelity, quality and presentation is impressive.
So now Guerilla Games have found a new big office in the historic center (basically the only building that would fit their criteria in that area ) for the whole team, would mean in theory that new games coming from them should have an easier development cycle and hopefully will show in the eventual quality output.

Guerilla have been working on two titles, HFW and a currently unamed FPS game that we'll probably get in 2024, my bet is on a SOCOM reboot, or they're bringing back Killzone.
So 400 people seems about right.
All of Sony's first party studios have pretty much doubled since then, Insomniac 4/5 teams (unconfirmed exactly), Santa Monica 2 teams, Naughty Dog 3 teams, Guerilla 2 teams.
ID: hx859cgI really hope those socom rumours turn out to be true
I've been waiting years and years for it to return
ID: hx8dtfnI really feel like it's true, Sony are clearly expanding their multiplayer portfolio and using a beloved and nostalgic IP to kick-start an FPS legacy for the PS5 is just such an obvious move.
Fingers crossed!

From everything I've seen, Forbidden West really does look like the most expensive video game ever made. My god the sheer level of detail is mindblowing.
-
Even in the DLC for Zero Dawn they had already pretty much fixed the iffy base game facial animations
I think this is more a consequence of an extremely talented technical team learning from the mistakes they made with their first open world game and expanding upon what they did well
Very excited for the wizardry GG can produce when they can fully utilize the PS5 without compromise

Hopefully, Sony will open more studios and expand existing ones.
-
PS4 era was about growing these studios, and Insomniac was the one with the largest amount of growth.
Guerilla is working on a VR game, a sequel to FW (Hulst said the studio wanted to make a trilogy), and a multiplayer project (which could be Killzone).

95% of the assets are made by outsourcing companies, even Alloy is not modeled by Guerrilla (the 3d model, not the design). Animations are outsourced too. Even if you grow larger, games are still bigger and bigger 😀
ID: hx8m5p2Source? That was true for hzd 1 but haven't heard anything for the 2

TLOU2 is just mind-blowing, looks just as good as any currently released PS5 title imo.
Can't wait to see what Naughty Dog have in store, their first PS5 exclusive is going to be groundbreaking.
