EDIT: Most of the comments reassured me, so I think I'll buy it when it goes on sale. However, I'm still looking for opinions (the more the merrier, I guess), so feel free to share your experience with the game.
EDIT 2: Please, stop recommending the Game Pass. I don't have PC or Xbox.
I'm at the last level of Doom (2016), going to finish it today or tomorrow. I've never played any Doom games before, but since I could borrow this from my uncle, I decided to give it a go and I really liked it. Shooting demons mindlessly is a lot of fun and since I finished 2016 relatively fast, I'm thinking of buying Eternal once it goes on sale.
I have a few questions about the game though.
Are there more enemy types in Eternal than in 2016? One of my main problem was that the game was repeating the same 8-10 enemy types throughout the levels and it got a bit repetative in terms of variety at the end, because I was fighting the same battles, only with more demons. Are the enemy types more distinct from each other in Eternal than in 2016? Another problem was that while all demon types had different attacks and moves, none of them had any specific weaknesses, so even though I had an arsenal of guns on me, I pretty much just used the one I had the most ammo in. I'd be happy if Eternal had enemies like Horizon Zero Dawn where you have to use the enemies' weak spots, otherwise you won't be able to defeat them. Is Eternal longer than 2016? I feel like I finished 2016 pretty fast and I know I take forever to finish a game, so in this case, it was probably the game's fault for being too short. Are the levels more diverse in terms of theme/setting? I liked the Mars/Hell setting in 2016, but I would've liked if there were some different sceneries in some levels. The whole red-ish, hellish vibe got a bit overused in the last levels. Does Eternal have boss fights? I found 2016 lacking in that and I love a good boss fight. Are there any other differences in Eternal compared to 2016? I'm curious about everything that's not a huge spoiler. My main concerns are listed above, but if there's something else that's a change compared to 2016, I'd be happy if you could tell me.All in all, that's it. If someone could write a short review for me answering these questions, I'd be thankful. I don't really trust gaming journalism and review sites anymore and I heard that they also misjudged Eternal as well, so I'm putting my trust in Reddit. Thanks!

Yes you should, but it’s worth noting that it’s significantly harder than Doom 2016
ID: gq3aixp -
I think eternal is even a better game than Doom 2016.
Yes to almost every question.
More variant of the enemy, the enemy has more gimmick and uniqueness, it has more boss battle and you'll see it much earlier.
The map has more gimmick, it's more fun to run around in both exploring and fight in the arena but not much more different in terms of theme/scenery.Tbh I can't remember much about 2016. But another big difference is how you gain bullet/hp/shield from the enemy.
Eternal require you to burn the enemy/chainsaw them/glory Kills to gain specific resource.ID: gq4djq3Pretty sure in 2016 it is basically the same (chain for ammo, kill/glory for health) but you can't flame belch enemies for armor
-
I’ll go against the grain and say that you’re paying retail price for what is essentially a 10-15 hour experience. Unless you’re willing to 100% achievement hunt you’re not getting much else.
It’s a great game. Don’t get me wrong, but I think there’s not much in terms of depth or replayabilty. Especially with the classic multiplayer removed
ID: gq3m7wgI’ve waited for 2016 and Eternal to both go on sale for this reason alone. I’m not obsessed like others but enjoy the main campaigns. 60 dollars for both games would feel like a rip off but 20 each and I’m satisfied with the content.
ID: gq3lowtI don't really mind if it's not worth replaying, because I usually don't replay games anyway. I'd definetely wait for a sale, I don't spend more than 10$ on a game most of the time. I think it's a fair price for some fun demon slaying.
ID: gq4b8x5It’s definitely closer to the 20 hour mark.
-
Yes you should buy doom eternal.
I haven’t played 2016 but I finished doom eternal for the first time earlier this week.
As I said, I can’t compare it to 2016 but there are quite a lot of enemies in doom eternal, bringing back ones from 2016 and adding new ones.
To answer your second question: The enemies are very strong, but they all have a weakness. Arachnatron - you shoot the laser bit off first, mancubus - you shoot out it’s cannons. The game has been designed in a way so that you are constantly switching weapons for the enmities you are fighting. Also, not to mention the chainsaw.
I found the game to be quite long, I probably spent about 25-35 hours on it.
There are quite a few settings yes. (Don’t want to spoil anything)
Yes eternal has boss fights.
Overall, I found the game to be amazing, and it’s definitely worth playing.
Hope this helped!
ID: gq37t6uThank you for your answer. So it seems the combat resembles HZD regarding the use of different tactics and weapons against different monsters. That's pretty neat, that's exactly what I'm looking for in Eternal.
-
It's been a little bit since i played but yes ther are more enemy types, some have also changed from 2016, by the end you've come across basically everything but i think that's par for the course in any of these games.
Eternal is extremely good at making you use all of the weapons in the game, even if its just a specific mod i remember constantly swapping between weapons and rarely ever ignoring a weapon for too long.
Eternal was a decent portion longer 2016 i beat in around 11 and eternal was 18-20, playing both on nightmare. This seems to be a fairly average completion time according to other websites.
there's a lot more variety in levels, its not just hell or mars, but i wont spoil where you go of course.
Eternal has bosses but i would say its around the same as 2016, i can't say i personally care for boss fights in these games, it shines in the arena fights.
There are a lot more acrobatics and the movement is hugely different thanks to that, jumping dashing and grappling, wall climbing and even platforming sections which a lot of people bitch about but aren't a big deal imo. If you enjoy that kinda thing you can use it to your advantage in fights too, like monkey bars in the arenas.
if you enjoyed 2016 i would say you can't go wrong with eternal but i've been proven wrong before.
feel free to ask anything else or for more specificity
ID: gq37pwyThank you for your answer. Is there grappling in Eternal? Do you mean a grappling hook like in Just Cause?
-
Considering you want PS4, I would suggest not buying it. I regret my purchase. The game is borderline unplayable with a controller, and for some fucking reason that I cannot comprehend, they didn't bother to put mouse and keyboard support in the Ps4 version. (this is coming from someone that generally prefers playing shooters with a controller, but Doom eternal simply requires too much precision and the weapon wheel in my opinions doesn't work, and idk how... But the actual aiming is some of the worst I've ever felt in a shooter)
ID: gq3kyveI beat it with a controller on nightmare. Ultra nightmare I have no idea how people do that.
ID: gq3i8cm10/10 game... Too bad you don't get to experience it if you're playing it on Ps4. It's just clunky and frustrating, if you ask me.
ID: gq3lxtjI had no problem with the controller in 2016, is it really that different?
-
I think Doom 2016 is the tighter, better game. Eternal is more of the same and then a bit more on top of that. Still very, very good, but the reliance on attacking weak points made the combat a little less of a freeform melee of madness and a bit more precise.
The platforming is more involved but I don't think that makes it better.
Environments are definitely better than the first game, and being able to air dash and pull yourself towards enemies with the super shotty chain is awesome.
If you want more of the same but bigger do it.
ID: gq3mrx2I have no problem with having to play smarter, actually, this is what I'm looking for. I feel 2016 didn't do justice to the arsenal of guns it's given me.
-
It depends.
I personally hated Doom Eternal, but I loved Doom 2016. One of my favourites.
In my opinion, this game is a huge step back from 2016. Here’s why.
Immersion. Forget it. Gone are the funny but morbid grabbing of eyes for scanners and pulling keycards off dead guards. Now it’s just big floating pickups. Even for new weapons. Bloody awful decision. If they wanted to go retro, then they should have made it an unlockable setting.Demons. They blow apart now, which is really cool. But, their art design is super backwards from the last game. Hell knights have eyes now... they just look goofy as hell now.
Story. 2016 told a simple but tight story. This one feels like it starts mid-way through the campaign. You NEVER actually learn how the two games connect. The main plot is again quite simple but told in the worst, most convoluted way imaginable. Also, third person cutscenes to pull you out of character.
Level design. They went old school but it feels more like Bowsers castle than hell on Earth. Complete with periodic fireball cannons and swirling fire balls going across platforms. Also floating coffins? Nothing that actually feels like a real place at any point.
Art design, more varied locations, but the most interesting things are the details in the background.
Music. It’s okay. Not as good as 2016, but that’s expected.
Guns, more balanced, but worse looking across the board except for the super shotty.
Constantly showing doors that have opened, a jumbled plot, some really boring locations to fight in, and floating pickups really hurt this game for me.
Finally, the ammo situation. The combat in this is harder, but it feels artificially harder. You have barely any ammo. You have to glory kill or chainsaw all the time. I love doing those, but it gets very boring, very fast.
Demons also rush you hard on this. Less bullet hell, more backpedaling while fighting and worrying about ammo. Just less fun.
Clearly alot of people enjoyed this game, and I did too, but I just felt deflated by the end. 2016 is still much much stronger. Even in its menus and overall presentation. Dare I say it’s even still the better looking game. But yeah, there it is.
-
I thought I would toss in my opinion as well
I played both, first one 2 years ago and eternal a few months back. I significantly preferred 2016. I can see why doom eternal is good. And it is good, don't get me wrong. But it just doesn't feel like doom. As someone noted, it is much faster and you are always running low on ammo. 2016 might have been slower, but it felt like doom. There was weight to actions. While in eternal you are able to hop and dash around, everything is constantly trying to kill you, and the game forces the other weapons on to you as your preferred one will probably be out quickly.
Both games are good. But very different. Again, this is just my opinion. Choice is up to you, and it seems you have already decided))
ID: gq3ratxWhile in eternal you are able to hop and dash around, everything is constantly trying to kill you, and the game forces the other weapons on to you as your preferred one will probably be out quickly.
This is what I'm looking for. In 2016, I sometimes felt like a slowpoke while playing, so I'd like it if Eternal were faster. My other - well, it wasn't exactly a problem - problem was that I didn't really need to use my whole arsenal while playing. I had like 8 weapons but could have rocket launchered my way to the end.
-
I'm conflicted on recommending Eternal. So to answer your questions.
Yes
Yes
Yes
Yes
Yes
While the visuals and controls are similar, the core of the game has changed. Eternal added a lot of verticality to it's level design with wall climbing, double jumping, and dashing. It also changed the game by altering it's ammo economy. You will regularly run out of ammo if you use a preferred weapon and need to use your chainsaw to get more. While this can be good since the game is forcing you to use all of the weapons in your arsenal, which is necessary because certain weapons work better against certain enemies, I personally was not a fan of the change because sometimes I want to just use the shotgun and have fun. Also powerup frequency has been significantly diminished. While power ups in 2016 felt like cool moments of game they don't show up as often in 2016 and they kind of feel like an after thought. The story also feels forced. In 2016 if you wanted a story you could go and find it in audio logs throughout the game. In Eternal the story is front and center but it probably won't make as much sense unless you read the codex entires you find throughout the game.
All in all I think Eternal is a well made game, it just changed too much of it's core for me. If you like fast paced shooters like Quake, you'll like Eternal
-
Eternal has flashes of goodness. But I thought 2016 was way better overall. As others have said, it forces you to play in a very rigid style. I would compare 2016 to Bloodborne with it's emphasis on different playstyles and the ability to regain health via aggression, while Eternal is similar to Sekiro with its very rigid combat system.
But more so, and the thing that keeps me from replaying it, the ungodly amount of complex and clunky first person platforming sections. They stop your progress. They're not fun. They're just there as a frustrating obstacle to slow you down from the reason you bought the game--to have fun shooting demons.
-
Don't go into it expecting too much, DOOM 2016 was the far superior game, but Eternal is still fun and worth the money. It's just disappointing after all the hype that went into it.
-
I think it depends how you play shooters.
I played Doom Eternal, and it was fun for awhile. But eventually I dropped it because it catered to only one type of playing: super up close and personal. The fact that melee killing enemies replenishes supplies and health forced your hand to play one way. It was absolutely cool, but it was frustrating that when I got stuck, hanging out and picking off enemies wasn’t an option
ID: gq3y0rlI loved glory killing demons and used the shotgun most of the time, so I don't mind getting close and personal.
-
Makes you feel like a god while still being challenging
-
Eternal is great but if you are coming from 2016 make sure you use your chainsaw very often because ammo is more scarce in eternal. Also every weapon, mod and ability has a specific use case so try using everything. Also learning learning basic combos and weapon switching makes the game much more fun and easier to play. Eternal is a good game and you should definitely try it
-
So, I have beaten 2016 a few times on various difficulty levels. I loved it. Loud metal and blasting demons was endlessly gratifying.
I have barely gotten through the first few levels of eternal and I don’t know if I ever will. It’s a MUCH more difficult game (for me) - Here are a few of my gripes:
No unlimited pistolThis sucks massively. I used the pistol to pick off the low level guys and would hop in and start blasting. Now, I have to both aim for weak points AND manage my ammo while trying to Rambo everything. Took away from experience, IMO. EDIT: Sniping is a thing in eternal, and it has no business in DOOM, IMO.
Maps are WAY betterI can’t emphasize this enough. The maps on Eternal are great. I hated the maps in 2016. The fact that it shows all the secrets too helps with my completionist tendencies
Enemies are SIGNIFICANTLY more difficultThe stupid weak spot system is annoying. This walking Krang guys with the gun on their head make me want to throw my keyboard across the room frequently
I played it on the easiest level and found frequently that I would be in a tough spot and completely out of ammo, needing to reset the level, which totally takes me out of it. If it simply had a weak unlimited pistol, I would enjoy the game 10000x more.
-
Going against the grain here, but as someone who jumped into eternal immediately after finishing 2016 I hated eternal so much I got a steam refund on it.
Its irrelevant to the questions u asked, but I'm just gonna list my gripes with eternal.
played it on PC. graphically, 2016 is cleaner and prettier than eternal. Eternal looks like the older game of the 2. the models in Eternal visually definitely did not appeal to me.
Gameplay style is significantly different. It felt more like Serious Sam to me than a sequel to doom 2016. u move faster, need a faster reaction time, constantly running out of ammo, forced to play in a very specific way or you die.
ID: gq3nen2Seconding this. I was not a fan of eternal, also to the point that I got a refund. And I loved the previous game.
I absolutely hated the amount of platforming in eternal. It breaks up the pace of the game, but not in a way that suits the series.
But my biggest gripe was the change to the overall flow by reducing ammo. You constantly have to switch weapons and utilize melee kills to refill ammo. It forces you to play a certain way and it was more frustrating than fun.
ID: gq3mfufI don't mind the graphics, I grew up on early-2000s games. Moving faster is actually what I'm looking for, I sometimes felt like a slowpoke in 2016. I've read the ammo problem from quite a few people now. From what I understand, you need to use specific weapons on specific demons to make things work. This is exactly what I'm looking for. I didn't mind it in 2016 as it just made my job easier, but I could have basically shoot my way through the whole game with one gun. That's why I asked if there's smarter gunplay in Eternal.
-
Are there more enemy types in Eternal than in 2016?
Are the enemy types more distinct from each other in Eternal than in 2016?
Yes, to both. There are a few new enemy types, and changes to existing ones. Each ones requires it's own strategy.
Is Eternal longer than 2016?
I never completed Eternal. So I can't say.
Are the levels more diverse in terms of theme/setting?
Yes. You get to visit.... Different realms, and Earth. Each level I played seemed rather distinct, too.
Does Eternal have boss fights?
It does, in the same way 2016, does. However, when a new enemy veriaty gets introduced, and you're learning how to deal with it, that kind of feels like a mini boss fight.
Are there any other differences in Eternal compared to 2016?
Yes, the game is notably harder. The game, especially on harder difficulties require an optimal way of beating encounters. Ammo is light, and player damage is also up. Doom 2016 was fun, and in comparison, I don't think this game is. The game also now gives more of a character to Doom guy... one, that feels more the verge of a fan of himself, a-la Duke Nukem. They even give Doomguy a voice, but thankfully it's rarely used. Their is a notable jump in story from 2016, to the start of Eternal. Something DLC is meant to fill in. The story is a bit more in your face. Their is cutscenes delving into the Doom lore. Its not just audio log based, like the majority of 2016.ID: gq37ne1Thank you for your answer. Why do you think Eternal wasn't fun?
-
All of your questions can be answered with yes because these are the things that the devs improved.
I think there are 22 demons in eternal
Each demon has a weakness for example the mancubus has the arm canons which can be destroyed so if his arms are destroyed it disables his flamethrower ability. Most demons have similar weaknesses
I don‘t know much about the length of 2016 but eternal is definetly as long and with the dlc its definetely longer
Let me tell you the first three levels and their settings: level one is earth but with a lot of lava and it‘s basicly like hell. Level two is a ruined and overgrown ancient city. Level three is a metallic facility in an icy and snowy enviroment.
The game has 4 or 5 boss fights
The movement has way more depth because of the grapling hook, the dash, monkey bars and climbing walls. The game looks more cartoony and some people dislike that but I think it fits together really well
-
I recently started playing it and i love it, i wasnt a big fan of doom 2016 dont know why but something just didnt click for me.
In Doom Eternal you actually feel like a Doom Slayer, it is insanley good at conveying that feeling that you are the ultimate killing machine.
-
The answer will be Yes to all of those. Eternal is easily one of the best FPS games I’ve ever played, and is quite long, with a lot of varied levels, More enemies with distinct weaknesses. Boss fights are also present.
-
Absolutely yes. Everything you wanted is added in Eternal, which I loved (and conversely, a lot of people hated) but considering your preferences I think you'll love it
-
So, once I finished the game, I kinda stopped playing, so that's something to keep in mind I suppose. The experience of playing it the one time was absolutely worth the price tho imo. I'm not even big on shooters, but that shit had me hype till the final level. Still, after that I just kinda dropped it for some reason lol
ID: gq3nsr5I'm not one to replay games either, so I'm only planning on playing it once.
-
my first play thru it took me a whole week of play time to finish the game, and to unlock most things, and I still have yet to finish it on the hardest one, I really enjoyed everything, different layouts and enemies, different colors and places, I also really enjoyed the movement system too, tho a little clunky here and there it’s a big step up from the 2016 doom. even the story was ok, the mini boss fights was pretty cool the first time through and they all their weaknesses too. all in all the game is pretty great I rate it 9/10
-
Doom (2016) is, in my opinion, the better game when it comes to atmosphere.
Everything else, Eternal does better and all your concerns are for naught, because everything you want, Eternal has. The story is meh but has it's awesome moments, while the gameplay is absolutely top notch.
Saying more would be spoiling your experience, so I won't (though others here already have).
Just get the game.
ID: gq3rjrpI don't care much about the story. I wasn't paying attention in 2016 either, I just wanted to shoot demons.
-
I found it a bit more difficult then the 2016 remake which was frustrating but I still had a blast. Combat was excellent lore was really good
-
I don't play a lot of shooters but I tried Doom 2016 and liked it. However Doom Eternal does not play the same. My biggest issue is the extesive additional platforming they added. It killed the fun for me.
-
Yes, not just for ending demons’ lives, but you can catch some THICC devils making you wish spanking them was a glory kill
-
Okay, so I actually think the 2016 doom is a superior game in terms of a story and atmosphere. Doom eternal is more arcade-y, in like, not all great ways (to me). But it’s probably more traditionally “Doom” than 2016 is. Still SOLID, but yeah, i’m probably more of a fan of 2016 doom. But eternal is great.
-
I spent $1500 to rebuild my computer to play this game. I don’t regret anything lol
-
All of them can be summarised into "Hell yes it does".
-
You can get game pass for month if you're on PC or Xbox.
-
Hell yes (pun intended)
-
I think it’s a perfect continuation of 2016. Some people didn’t like all the platforming but I didn’t mind it. The story is still good, i’m just waiting for the second part of the dlc for Eternal to drop so I can start 2016 over and play through all of them.
-
idk on PS4, but on my 5 year old Xbox One it runs at a persistent 60 FPS with problems
-
With only reading the title. Yes. Very yes in fact. Even if you hate video games the sound track is insane.
ID: gq4ltlhI love the soundtrack, I've been blasting BFG Division and Rip and Tear on my speakers in the recent days. The neighbors love me.
-
If you play on pc or Xbox check out game pass, I believe it's on game pass for both.
ID: gq4pr34Mate, the flair literally says PS4.
-
Doom eternal is better than 2016 in every way the only bad thing is that eternal has way more elements to the game and it’s hard to keep track
-
1: There are way more enemy types in DE than in D2016
2:The enemy types are also more distinct. They each have their own attacks, roles they play in an encounter, and their own weakpoints.
3:I found Eternal wasn't much longer than 2016 but the replay value is pretty high compared to 2016.
4:Hell yes. There's tons of different themes and shit in the levels.
5: Eternal has a couple more boss fights, yes.
6: the combat is definitely harder in a good way. Less ammo means you have to actually use all the weapons frequently, although you will still be using certain weapons more often. Glory kills are great. The progression and leveling systems are great. The platforming is great. It's just a really good game and I highly recommend it. I had a ton of fun playing this game, and it's one of my all time favorites.
-
Simple answer, yes At full price if you have to And I've heard the dlc is good
-
Yes. There are way more enemies and they all have specific weaknesses. The enemies are way more distinct from each other and have different abilities. The game is faster paced.
It's is also more diverse. Each level Is way different than the last.
-
It made me fall in love with metal all over again. That's priceless.
-
I really liked 2016 and bought Eternal soon after finishing it, 2016 was a good game but Eternal is probably one of my Favourite games of all time. There is a few more boss fights in Doom eternal than 2016 and the scenery changes wildly from red hell to gray and misty to blue and pink. I would say the games a bit longer than 2016 especially if you play on the higher difficulties which I recommend. In eternal your pretty much are going to use every gun in you in really big fights, yeah there is guns you will use more but they are all helpful in there own way and can be combined in sequences to do a lot of damage. Personally I adore Doom Eternal and in my opinion it’s only down side is that it lacks a little of the dark atmosphere that 2016 had, it makes up for it in almost every other way tho
-
Yes. Yes you should. Doom eternal is hands down one of the single greatest FPS games of all time.
-
Yes, one of the best games I've played for a long time.
-
If you had Xbox or a PC, it’s on Game pass for free for the first month
ID: gq5eigwGuys, please stop recommending me the Game Pass, the flair literally says PS4.
-
Doom Eternal is better than 2016 in almost every way possible.
So all the questions asked in your post is a yes
-
Eternal takes everything about 2016 and turns it up to 11. The combat loop is unmatched.
-
I didn't even read your post but based on your title absolutely yes
-
Yes.
-
I bought it, played it, then let my bro borrow it for a bit to try it out as well, since he loves doom.... haven't gotten my game back yet....
-
Rip and tear until it is done brother
-
Hell yes, it’s my favorite game of all time. It’s a masterpiece.
-
Absolutely buy it.
-
Yes you should buy it, and yes to basically all your questions. Eternal is much faster paced and much more involved. If you're not using the right weapon in the right enemies weak spots, if you're not using chainsaw at the right time, you're gonna fail. It's better in basically every way.
-
Buy it. It’s great.
Then come back here when you encounter your first Marauder and scream at us.
-
Check this meme about Doom Eternal
ID: gq3mjqwHaha, this reminds me of Hollow Knight's primal aspids.
-
If you liked doom you willreally like doom eternal. I had a blast with that game, especially on the harder difficulties. I recommend you play nightmare or the one below it for the optimal experience
-
Yes
-
To summarize my experience with Doom Eternal. 2016 was almost unplayable afterwards. Everyone thought Doom 2016 was movement based but it was really just 'walking based'. Eternal is movement based. With the DLC and master levels there is plenty of content to keep you occupied. There are definitely more boss fights as well and they are throughout the game, not just crammed at the end.
The levels are all extremely beautiful and diverse. Without spoiling I would check out the trailers it does a good job of showing off the new level aesthetics. But yes there are levels that arent 90% orange.
The game also gives very very transparent demon weakness. For example, in the first level you will learn an easy way to kill cacodemons instead of shooting at their very meaty health bars. If you read the codes entries it specifically lists weaknesses. Although some codex entries are just suggestions that players have found better alternatives for.
High Level Doom Eternal is all about weapon swapping and using ALL of your resources, not just spamming remote detonation. You will actually feel like your reserves are significantly reduced. In terms of demons, every single demon present in 2016 returns on top of many new additions (return of the archvile as well if you played the original Doom 2).
-
If you decide to get it, buy Xbox Gamepass and play it from there.

It's not that much of a problem, I can always lower the difficulty if I find it too hard.
