Since it's International Women's Day I thought this week we can be topical and talk about our favorite female video game characters. From Samus from Metroid to Jade from Beyond Good & Evil to Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite there are a lot of women in games that have been well regarded over the years. So who's your favorite women in gaming and why?

Always loved Tali in the Mass Effect games.
ID: gq84yopID: gq8dptsTali best waifu. (fite me.)
ID: gq8k2zvA fellow man of culture!
ID: gqe6oygYep.

Off the top of my head I have appreciated and enjoyed:
Mitsuru from Persona 3
Naoto and Rise from Persona 4.
BlackRose from .hack
Velvet from Tales of Berseria
Kainé from Nier
2B from Nier: Automata
Flonne from Disgaea
Lennox from Evolve
Lizzy Stride from Dishonored
Mei from Overwatch
Morrigan from Dragon Age
Rita from Tales of Vesperia
Velvet from Tales of Berseria
Bayonetta from Bayonetta
Snow White from The Wolf Among Us
Lulu from Final Fantasy X
Cassidy from Fallout New Vegas
ID: gqa5i0nMorrigan from Dragon Age
Morrigan disliked that.
Christ, I wanted to like her, but I swear to god she would try to bite my head off if I tossed a copper to a beggar.
Like, holy shit, lady, I'm not doing quests because I'm a goody two shoes, I'm doing quests because they give EXP, and I need that sweet, sweet EXP to learn more spells. Once I hit max level, my level of giving-a-shit about the small people drops to zero (barring some other nice reward). Stop bitching at me.
ID: gq8k66gMitsuru from Persona 3
FTFY, and she is 100% Best Girl.
ID: gqdeq6uVelvet from Tales of Berseria
I tell you what, I thought the ending for that game was bullshit.

It's funny, the most memorable ones for me almost always comes in a pair of two from the same game.
Witcher 3 with Triss and Yennefer, both just being incredibly likable and have great moments in the story, even more so if you go out of the game and read the books/short stories.
FF7 with Tifa and Aerith. Something so timeless about their characters. Aerith in particular holds a deep spot in my heart just due to her incredible journey in that game. Really hope they don't mess it up with the remakes on her story.
ID: gqowfunI second Triss and Yennefer, especially for that wonderful hilarious side quest that pops up if you pursue a romance with both of them

Samus Aran. Forget babying the Metroid, she's the mother of female protagonists in video games.
ID: gqad188Imo Samus is a female character done right. She doesn't force any hamfisted "girl power" messages but she's not complete eye candy either. She's badass, resilient, and reserved enough that the player can put themselves in her shoes, similarly to Master Chief.

Gotta go with the women on the creation side of the game; far more important than the ones on screen, IMO.
Classic: Roberta Williams - Sierra played a major role in my first steps into computer gaming. King's Quest was great, but Phantasmagoria was my first foray into Horror Games, and really moved the needle for more "Adult" games (and no, I'm not talking about "Softporn", which she was on the original box art for).
New: Natsuko Ishikawa - Absolutely wrecking it in FF XIV; wrote the storyline for the Dark Knight class, then the third Expansion, and was tapped to write the next Expansion (which will purportedly wrap up everything from 2.0 onwards). Took tired, tropey antagonists, and made me feel like crap for beating them. Twice.ID: gq85u4rAmy Hennig is also a treasure. Directed, wrote, and produced Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, directed Jak 3, and was the writer and creative director of the first three Uncharted Games.
I think she's since Naughty Dog for another company to continue to write story-focused games.
ID: gq8kfzhGoing to have to rep Yoko Shimomura for her amazing work on video game soundtracks from Street Fighter, to Kingdom Hearts to Xenoblade. Love her work so much.
-
Female V from Cyberpunk 2077 because Cherami Leigh put so raw emotion in her voice and brought her to life.
ID: gqfwviqYeah, the difference in Vs is astounding. The voice was the biggest reason I kept playing as female V. Male V just sounds... dumb, at all times - and it doesn't help that there's a giant disconnect between the dialogue options and what V actually says.
So yeah, I accept getting friendzoned by Panam, if it means I get more of the awesome voice acting.

I just started Xenoblade Chronicles because of the Smash update and Fiora seems pretty tight so far. Liara had a great character arc in Mass Effect imo. And I really like any of the Persona girls, and was happy that in Royal that Yoshizawa was an actual character and not another Marie
ID: gq9qcypI just started Xenoblade Chronicles because of the Smash update and Fiora seems pretty tight so far.
Enjoy the rollercoaster. That game twists and turns and twists and turns... Truly a great swan song from the Wii.

Hundreds of characters I liked throughout the couple decades I've been gaming. Many of them female.
If I've had to point out one that stuck with me the most I think I would say Alyx from HL2. Smart, capable, versatile, funny and caring. Good looking also.
Not the most complex of characters but maybe that's why. She seemed human.
I really hope that if they ever want to do anything with her they won't fuck it up.
-
You can't not love Bayonetta, when that Fly me to the moon cover kicks in you just got to love the stylishness of that game.
Aya Brea from Parasite Eve. Good character, good game, decent story. Though this seems to be one of the properties that Square has forgotten about.
ID: gqcl9vhBayonetta is the personification of "Work it, girl!" in the best ways possible.
Also, guns strapped to the shoes for maximum swag.

favorite women in gaming
Cammy (StreetFighter II)
Gamers have adored her muscled arms for 27 years. She defied the "delicate female" body trope and gamers loved her for it.
Her facial scar has taught kids not to be body-shamed by injuries beyond their control, and empowered women of all ages who felt anxious about their "imperfect" faces.
She brought minority representation (Britain) into a game dominated by paticipants from the American (Guile, Ken, Balrog, Dee Jay, T. Hawk) and Asian (Ryu, Honda, Chun Li, Zangief, Dhalsim, Sagat, Bison, Fei Long) continents.
As an MI-6 agent, she proved a young woman can hold her own and thrive in a predominantly male government agency
Unlike many of her peers, she does not use weapons or shoot firebals. Her strength is her physical martial art skills tailored to her diminutive size, learned and practiced, making her relatable to young girls everywhere.
She isn't ashamed of her femininity and does not promote the message that women can only be "strong" by imitating men. She's proud of her long hair and doesn't let puritanical society shame her into covering up her skin and leg tattoos. Like all female volleyball players and gymnasts, she choses to wear her signature leotard because it's practical for the competitive physical sport she engages in.
Serves as a role model for young asexual women by boldly defying gendered fashion norms through her repeated wearing of neckties, while also normalizing female sexual empowerment through her fondness for chokers and knee high boots as casual wear; pushing back against a patriarchal society that once considered high heels a form of witchcraft.
Is as popular today as she was back when she was voted 5th best character in 1993. Adored by female fans and one of the most cosplayed characters of the franchise, and has consistantly swept polls for the most popular and most wanted character in Streetfighter games for decades.
Teaches everyone that inclusive, all-female groups are a force to be reckoned with!
ID: gqgaxjxBeating them at their own stupid game... Bravo.

A2 and 2B from Nier automata Morag from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Sayama from Yakuza Kiwami 2
ID: gq8g9feSayama
Frankly one of the only things that has ever pissed me off about the Yakuza series, that they just sort of shoved her character out of the story. I get that they didn't want to commit to there being a focus on Kiryu in a romantic relationship, but that finale in Kiwami 2 to her just sort of disappearing after that, always felt super weird to me. Especially sad, because her character overall was really fucking great. Would've loved to see her bounce off Majima more in the future games.
-
Can't go wrong with Jill Stingray.
-
this is a surprisingly wholesome post, awesome.
I always play at Peach in mario games
-
This is a day of great cringe. I was hoping for more laughs but it honestly isn’t much fun this year. I was on Twitter but I had to stop, seeing too many people and developers sayI normally like say the stupidest things.
it's pretty stupid that men get 364 days
Fuck
Edit: oh. Samus. Athough I feel the later lore about making her a chosen one type character, and having her raised by Chozo was lame. She seems less like a badass bounty hunter now.
-
Alis Landale, from the original Phantasy Star, will always be my favorite female protagonist. To my 8 year-old self there was something incredibly novel in fighting an intergalactic dictator as a girl wearing a pink skirt.
I know that Phantasy Star, especially for the limitation of being originally released in an 8-bit platform is simplistic in terms of dialogue and story - but the experience of exploring the different planets in Algol star system as Alis finds her allies in her quest to avenge her brother is still an engaging one. I really wish Sega would do a modern remake of the Algol saga (the first 4 Phantasy Star games), especially the first game in the series.
And it's impossible to mention Phantasy Star without mentioning my favorite female game developer. Rieko Kodama left her mark in so many influential games from my youth that I would hardly be the same person if not for her work.
-
Kate Walker from Syberia 1, April Ryan from The Longest Journey and Grace Nakamura from Gabriel Knight 1 & 3.
No-nonsense and level-headed (unless REALLY out of their depth), intelligent, slightly snarky, quite feminine but not over-sexualized, allowing themselves to have and show vulnerability.
Unfortunately, only adventure games have such protagonists since action games don't give too much room for one's personality (with the exception of Duke Nukem, Blood and Shadow Warrior, but those are self-referential & self-aware satires) and RPGs need to account for player choices, therefore none of the protagonists (save Geralt in The Witcher series) have A personality, but multiple. -
I think Samus, just felt like a huge badass
-
Don't think I can just take out my "absolute favorite", but i'll mention a few that I like that I haven't noticed show up already (like most of the people mentioned in this thread honestly, although totally seconding A2/2B especially, not to mention with the additional context from the novels. Is... wow.)
Misaki Tobisawa from Aokana... Honestly she cheats a bit because I relate to her more then I should. That idea of squandering your natural talent the moment things start to take that bit more effort, perhaps it is hubris but I feel that...
Makoto from Persona 5, just admire that dedication and drive.
Brynhild from Fate/Grand Order, she was just great in the second lostbelt honestly. And the love she shares with Sigurd is impressive.
Quiet from MGSV, the one who managed to break the cycle of hatred. Shame we'll never get another game with her.
The Boss from MGS3, I think there's been people who have expressed why she is awesome far better then I ever can, so I don't feel up to explaining XD.
Kaelyn the Dove, from Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. Just the ur-example of Neutral good I swear. She saw injustice and did all she could to fix it, but she wasn't overbearing. She could be humble, willing to listen.
All the ones that spring to the top of my head and haven't been mentioned that I can see. Hope some people agree with some of my decisions XD.
Edit: Wrote "Baldurs Gate" instead of "Neverwinter Nights", bleh, been too long.
ID: gq9s07fBryn has another showing in Summer 5 that is even better than LB2. She gets to be happy.
-
Jill Valentine, of course!
Look, there's a reason why she's often the recommended character over Chris when people try to recommend Resident Evil: because she's the more compelling of the two.

Not an amazing game, but Aveline Vallen from Dragon Age 2 is a favorite of mine. One of the few characters who plays better Friendly than Rivaled. Yuna from FFX also stands out. I'm sure she'd get smeared as a "damsel in distress" or something, but this is a young woman who believes so strongly in her convictions that she's willing to suffer for them. Best Girl.
-
Gris kinda made me mist up like I stepped on a lego just hard enough to kinda sorta hurt
-
Women in video games
-
Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. Probably because that made being a journalist look very dangerous and exciting.
From Fighters: Vanessa from Virtua Figther, Juri and Elena from Street Fighter, Christie from Tekken.
Honestly, I did like Joanna Dark from Perfect Dark Zero. Not the most memorable, but solid nonetheless.
-
Nero: Fate/Extra
Samus: Metroid
Liara: Mass Effect
Ryona: Senran Kagura
Morrigan: Darkstalkers
Morrigan: Dragon Age
Velvet: Tales of Berseria
-
Some list, with pictures to go with them:
Keira- Jak and Daxter
Alicia- Valkyria Chronicles
Riley- Valkyria Chronicles 4
Piper- Fallout 4
Veronica- Fallout: New Vegas
Tifa Lockhart- Final Fantasy 7
Artemis- Hades
Pyra and Mythra- Xenoblades Chronicles 2
ID: gqox3ogAh man Artemis is great. Really need to get back to Hades. So good.
-
Gotta throw in my favorite dark horse character no one seems to know. Jen from Primal.
-
Any woman who is not from a post-2012 Western or European developed game.

My biggest weakness in that game. I always started new playthrough, saying i wanted to go another route to see them, but fuck me, her character is just so likable.
