Subnautica is one of the free games being offered today and this is just a reminder on how to get 60fps (only in water) since the game is inherently 30fps.
You essentially have to push L1 + R1 + X at the same time (might take a few tries) to open the command console, type “vsync.” Then open it again and type “targetframerate 60.” Open it one last time and type “vsync” again.
This should make it 60fps only when in water. If you want to make sure it is 60, open the command console again and type "fps" for a counter.
Have fun!
Edit: apparently it disables trophies so do it at your own advisory.

Is this a permanent change or do I have to do it every time I open the game?

What else can be accomplished in Subnautica using the command console?
ID: gs7yve6I see a command to change the viewing distance. It probably could be increased on PS5.
ID: gsakge3That's pretty cool.

How to get 60 FPS In Subnautica:
Wait for the free update on PS5 coming soon with Below Zero!
ID: gsauko2thx m8!

Just be aware it does disable trophies for those bothered. I only found out half way through and decided to restart.
ID: gs8959pLol if anyone would rather have some meaningless participation trophies over playing at 60fps.
ID: gs89bq2I would. It's only 60 fps in the water. I enjoy base building a lot so it was really jarring to keep changing between 30 and 60.
Also, i personally enjoy trophies.
-
If only all games had this on console. Shame it only works in the water. It must be jarring to go from 60 to 30 everytime you come up for air
ID: gs7t8l3It is a bit jarring for sure but it's the best we got for now unfortunately.
ID: gsa6b3pI must have some sort of mutant power to interpolate between frames in my brain (or some disability to see in 60FPS IRL) because I swear I'm the only person on the entire internet who literally cannot tell the difference. I have never cared in the slightest about 30 vs 60 FPS.
ID: gsa9hokSome people are like that, its weird. But everyones eyes and brains are different so it makes sense
ID: gsal7s4I'm right there with you. I can tell if someone tells me it's 60 vs 30 or if I look at something side by side, but otherwise, I never notice and am not bothered with 30.
This site really helps me see it:
ID: gsb4muoThe more you play at a certain framerate the more normal it will seem to you. So if you play a lot of games at 30FPS it'll be difficult to tell when it's running at 60.
Back when I did most of my gaming on the Xbox 360 I never really noticed that my games ran at 30FPS (and an unstable 30 at that). I had to go back and check to verify the games I played actually ran at 30.
After about 5 years of playing nothing but 60FPS games on PC 30FPS is noticeable. Noticeable to the point that it's distracting even in games where framerate doesn't matter like Persona 5.
I have trouble telling the difference between 60FPS and high refresh rate 144hz monitors running games at 144FPS. However I bet if I played at 144FPS for a year or so 60FPS would become noticeable.
None of it really matters unless you're playing competitively where lower framerates puts you at a disadvantage. It's a game, if it makes you happy when you play it then it's running great.
ID: gsa849hJust wondering, do the balls on this site running at 30FPS and 60FPS look the same to you?
ID: gsae127It's a massive difference. Play a game that has 30 fps and 60 fps options and switch between them. You get used to 30 fps if that's all the game can do but 60 is a much better overall experience
ID: gsa9lscIt’s literally impossible not the tell the difference. Your TV probably has motion smoothing on so it makes it very difficult to notice fake 60 FPS and real 60 FPS.

There's a PS5 port coming alongside the new one soon anyways so you dont have to rush into it.
ID: gs9sd11Is there?
ID: gs96fk6Guess I'll wait for the port then!
ID: gs9ptqsis there a source for this?
ID: gs9rdxcHere they refer to some 'press-release'. Haven't found the press-release they refer to though.

Was thinking of this game literally last night while watching that Netflix doc My Octopus Teacher
ID: gsb9y0dThat documentary was pretty great.

Are you serious? Why it such a faff to enable 60fps?
ID: gs80bhb"faff" is a new word for me
ID: gs8jsr6Welcome to the wonderful world of not everyone using American English.
ID: gs7vft2Because the ps5 version hasn't come out yet. Less outrage would do you well.
ID: gs7vlmfMore confusion, why isn’t it a simple option in the setting like other games but possible through an obscure method?
ID: gs8fppqHonestly, calling something a faff is such like a British sign of dejection... I’d love to hear what an outraged faff sound like where you’re from... 😛
-
OP you should mention that the games aren't free yet. They won't be free for another 5 or so hours.
ID: gs7zstuYeah, edit it now or there's gonna be a flood of confused people comments.
It's 8pm PDT

A few things. I know for me I had to hit square+x+L1+R1 to get my console to pop up. Also, you just have to type in vsync 0/1. You don’t need to do all that other stuff.
ID: gs890glYou need to do it all or it isn’t smooth 60fps, and you don’t have to hit square.

Subnautica is free today? I haven't heard of this! Any special reason for that?
ID: gs7xpwiIt's part of Playstations "Play at Home" initiative. They gave away ratchet and clank during March, and Ucharted collection last year. Players get free games, Sony gets publicity and drives up hype for the games' sequels
ID: gs9lpznI just bought this game about a week ago. I wish I had known about this.
ID: gs7y7v6That's cool, thanks. I only see Ratchet and Clank on the "play at home" section on the ps store. I'm in Europe so I'll keep an eye on the store to see if Subnautica becomes available.

More games need to offer the terminal on console like this, it’d be incredible to have terminal access in Skyrim on console.
ID: gsb5wduDon't know why you getting downvotes man, that sounds amazing!
-
Is this game any good?
ID: gs9lsu2It's lots of fun if exploration is your thing. I've been playing about a week and it's great so far.

???????????????
What kind of PC bullshit is that lol. It's bananas to me that you have to do this kind of stuff in a console that can perfectly run the game at 60 to begin with.
-
I wish they would allow console users access to config files like PC games. So much can be done to improve ones experience.
-
Wildly impractical, but thanks
-
jesus. good to know these guys are just as bad at console development as they are at pc development. cant remember the console command for it, but you can open up the actual unity options menu as well, and permanently set the frame rate to 60 from there. really would have thought theyd fixed this shit by now.
