ID: gtm34g8The PS3 originally came with (much better) Linux support and was quite popular for cheap HPC applications. I think CERN or someone build a cluster of hundreds because they were so cost effective.

ID: gtmi3bwCost effective, because console manufacturers sell them for 1 price over the course of (for the argument, let's say) 5 years. During these 5 years, the manufacturing cost will probably go down and the console manufacturer will earn a kickback per sold copy of a game, so they sell the console at a loss. At least for the first few years. Eventually they'll break even when parts costs go down and when the console is >3 years old they'll start making money on the sales of the consoles.
Even it out over the years and they're ok. But in the early years it might happen some company buys a ton of consoles because they're cheaper than the parts they contain.
ID: gtm7hf4Well they were right. It was still a stupid idea though because they didn't bother removing it until well after the system had already been hacked by which point removing it did nothing except piss off people who liked it for linux.
ID: gtmm1xpThe problem wasn't hackers, in fact you couldn't access all the hardware using the Linus kernel. The problem was people buying them to make supercomputer clusters. Sony lost a little bit of money on the hardware and wanted to stop this non-gaming use.

It was a best seller in part because at the time everyone wanted a DVD player and they weren't that much more than the basic models. Super easy to convince parents to buy them.

Ah the good old days... No need to install games & worry about hard drive space, no updates, no paid DLC. If you bought the game, you own it forever. No network connection required for single player. Modern gaming is fun too but I would trade some fancy graphics for some simplicity in a heartbeat

ID: gtmf0xdPs2 had thousands of broken shovel ware games that remained broken forever. Even before that you could pay up to $80 for a cartridge that would be broken without any way to patch it.
Don't get me wrong I loved that era's simplicity, but gaming has always been this busted industry of false advertising and broken software since atari.
If anything you get less broken games now, it just seems far worse because of all the "games as a service" micros and early access bullshit.

The PS2 was peak Playstation to me and that's not just nostalgia, since I played on the 3 and 4 just as much. There have been great games on latter consoles, but they were just too much hollywood for me personally. The Ps2 introduced and improved absolute bangers like: Shadow of the colossus, Shin megami tensei, silent hill, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Okami, Ratchet & Clank, Ico, Jak and Daxter, Viewtiful Joe, Bully, the budokai series etc. etc. And most of those were actual exclusives lasting over the entire generation. Whenever I thought about the PS2 there was a wide array of colourful brands that came to mind.

Got one for my birthday when FFX came out, played it for a good day before realizing I had no memory cards and therefore couldn't save my data. Called every store looking to buy one, nope sold out. "Welp, here I am playing a giant RPG with no ability to save. You might have wondered how I got to this point..."
Also the same console that died on me the day FFX-2 released and I had to send it to Sony for repairs that took a month.

Another fact: the startup sound doesnt exist anywhere! Its just random sounds looped, reversed, sped-up, slowed-down etc. This was supposed to show the power of the sound chip in the ps2.

Backwards compatible to all PS1 games + an amazing oibrary of games in its own right.
Played DVDs at a time when dedicated DVD players cost about the same as the console.
Best Console Ever.
