I bought a Pulse headset a couple days ago and I want to experience something cool, I’ve never used a headset before.

ID: gtpeyghID: gtprlnnFirst thing I noticed was how hollow sounding and bass heavy the audio was! It was truly terrible and only became bearable 50 hours in.
First impression of the game, the audio almost made me quit.
ID: gtq0i50It's SO BAD. I booted it up last night and it sounded like I had been dropped into the middle of a festival, which I eventually discovered was just a few people a block and a half away.
Footsteps/hoofbeats in particular are so inconsistent, and even pausing the game will sometimes make them drop out entirely (this has actually been a problem I've noticed with all of the modern open world AC games).

I believe demons Souls does. About the pulse headphones, are you liking them? Thinking about getting a pair.
ID: gtom5odI really liked them except for one big reason. They are really uncomfortable with glasses. If you wear glasses I would definitely not pick them up, I sold mine for that reason. Otherwise I liked them.

ID: gtopkj8I like them a lot, especially for how many controls are on them. I hate having to juggle a TV remote and a controller. I was surprised how good they are for watching movies as well, especially if you don't have a great sound system.

I got mine a week or so before launch, and have been using them since. I decided that the trade offs of having them sync perfectly with the ps5 was worth the kind of shitty sound...I also have a full surround system, so when I care about sound quality I use that.
ID: gtphv8bMine constantly cut out for brief moments and it’s incredibly annoying. I just plug them into my controller now which is pretty stupid that I have to do for a wireless headset. I think there’s a problem with the wireless dongle. I don’t know if the signal is being blocked because it’s behind my tv or what but it annoys the shit out of me.

Pulse bother me cuz I have to click the mic button on the headset rather than the controller.
Arctis 7p are a lot more comfortable and adjustable.
Although the Pulse seem to handle low frequencies better than Arctis in my experience.

Just because it seems to be a common misunderstanding: you do not need the Pulse headset to experience 3D audio. Any headset plugged into the controller will get it.

Edit: I should clarify, it needs to be wireless from the PS5 and using an officially supported dongle will work. It can’t be wireless via your TV’s interface.

I must admit, I have been underwhelmed with 3d audio so far. Hopefully it will improve as more ps5 exclusives appear

Surround sound traditionally means you have a bunch of physically separate speakers surrounding you. You can only hear sounds from where the speakers are placed (e.g. back/right) or by panning between two (halfway between back/right and front/right). The actual sound files themselves are not modified in any way, they just play at different volumes out of each speaker. There are some gaming headphones that use this tech, and physically have a bunch of different speakers inside each side of the headphones. That isn’t how Tempest for PS5 works.
In games, you can get a “good enough” effect even just with headphones on and using regular stereo audio. This is because you have the added cue of the visual. If you are looking forward and you hear footsteps dead center (but don’t see anyone), your brain will assume they’re coming from behind you. Couple this with the fact that you can turn your character left/right and hear the sound move left/right to get a more pinpoint understanding of where the sound is coming from. You do this naturally IRL, if it’s not immediately clear where a sound is coming from, you turn your head a tiny bit and then you can zero in. Although IRL, something else clues you in, which brings me to Spatial.
IRL, you’re pretty good at knowing where a sound comes from EVEN WITH NO VISUAL CLUE. Bc sounds change when they pass through and around things. Just like your voice sounds muffled if you talk with your hand over your mouth, sounds that come from behind you sound v.slightly different than sounds from in front bc they pass ove
your head and ears. Combine that slightly different filtering with the slight delay between a sound hitting your left ear vs right ear first, and your brain can pinpoint pretty accurately. Spatial audio works in this way. It filters the sounds themselves in the way that your head/ears etc. naturally do when a sound is coming from different directions. This works with normal headphones because IRL you only have two ears, with two eardrums, and it is the filtering (EQ) and timing (delay of left vs right) that gives our brain location info.PS5’s Tempest is “just” a suped up spatial audio engine, which has dedicated hardware in your console. This means it can process a LOT of sound elements at the same time, adding the spatial filtering to them, without draining resources from the games visual component.
Tl;dr Tempest is different from regular “surround sound,” it’s more “spatial audio” and any normal headphones will be great—Pulse do absolutely nothing different from regular headphones when it comes to PS5 3D audio.

Ghost of Tsushima has 3D audio, they added in with the 60fps patch.
I was REALLY able to notice when you riding on the horse and you can hear the heads flying above you.

I know that DICE puts alot of effort into the sound effects in Battlefield.

Ghosts of Tsushima and Demons Souls are both great. TLoU 2 is excellent! The environmental sounds like water dripping sound amazing and every source has a unique sound that you can really hear all around you.

The full PS5 version will have next gen features like activity cards to jump straight in, better use of the SSD, DualSense haptics and triggers and maybe even ray tracing - probably ray traced shadows though and not reflections - and will also be 60fps!
ID: gtot95bAgree with all of the above, but especially Demons Souls. I have a very good headset and no game has ever had such impressive sound design in my opinion. I have never enjoyed having firebombs thrown at me so much!

Star wars battlefront 2 Ewok Hunt mode is a real test of your hearing. Any cracking a twig signals impending doom so good headphones really help.

People seem to forget that the Tempest 3D Audiotech is supposed to be a "multi-year, step-by-step" implementation. We cannot expect launch games to blow us away with 3D audio, even the upcoming Resident Evil Village. When Sony starts to implement more HRTFs and speaker formats, we will start to see Cerny's vision being realized, and that will take years.

Hitman III uses it very impressively, you can walk through crowds of people and their conversations surround you. Rest of the game is awesome too.

Demon Souls for sure, one of the best examples is shooting a Soul Arrow spell. It gives off a echo that really makes the surround sound shine.

Hunt Showdown. The entire game revolves around audio cues in the environment. The best FPS ever made IMO. But be warned, the learning curve is super steep, you will get your ass handed to you for the first while until you get a true understanding of the game. Toughest shooter out there but definitely the most rewarding.

Not sure if nioh 2 does but it seems like it. Hearing deep pulsating heart beats from cores and when near death is pretty cool.

While we're kinda on the subject, has Playstation said anything about 3d audio support for TVs and surround sound setups?
Shortly before launch it was announced that only headset 3d audio would be ready out of the box and otherwise it seems like it has been swept under the rug.

I think that most AAA games take advantage of this technology. But one that really stood out for me what RDR2. The amount of work on the sound is just crazy in this game.
As for recent games, Ghost of Tsushima is pretty brillant too. It just sounds great.

I've been playing Metal Gear Solid V with the HUD off and only relying on my surroundings, and using sounds when infiltrating different locations. Definitely makes it a tad more intense.
