- Microsoft makes the Surface Laptop 4 official, offers choice of AMD or Intel
-
Not much of a choice when it is just recently released Tiger Lake if you go intel and last gen Renoir if you go AMD. Although tbf, AMD doesnt seem to have released its Cezanne U parts yet sooo...
Edit: I also find the clear value hierarchy interesting.
13.5-inch CPU RAM SSD PRICE AMD R5 4680U 8GB 256GB $999 AMD R5 4680U 16GB 256GB $1,199 Intel i5-1135G7 8GB 512GB $1,299 Intel i5-1135G7 16GB 512GB $1,499 Intel i7-1185G7 16GB 512GB $1,699 Intel i7-1185G7 32GB 1TB $2,299 15-inch

ID: gudy9tyWell the problem is that in its 28W configuration, the 1185G7 has pretty much matching nT performance as the 4800U.
ID: gufojqkAmd has been value king for a while and Intel never seemed to lose its grip on the premium end of the market so this doesn't surprise me. I wish these were available about 5 months ago when I was considering these for a school laptop. That base model would have been killer.

Interestingly they don't advertise how many cores the CPUs have on the product listing. In fact they don't tell you what CPU is in the intel models at all.
ID: gue4v5eAMD models all with lower RAM and storage options and fewer color choices.
ID: gue0qnbIn fact they don't tell you what CPU is in the intel models at all.
I wouldn't either. Of course, I wouldn't use Intel at all.

What's the Linux comparability prognosis on these things?
ID: gudzn19Depending on the Surface, pretty usable, but each model tends to have a couple issues with feature support.
ID: gufnnlgThat quite ironic
-
Wait why are the AMD chips cheaper options only with no larger storage and ram options when they have more CPU grunt?
ID: gufvhthMicrosoft tech just isnt there yet, apparently. lmao
-
sheesh. wtf are you doing MS?
-
Any idea if they're going to be greater than 60hz displays?
ID: gufo9bqThey can barely hit 60 fps in games. Whats the point of going beyond 60hz and sacraficing battery life?
ID: gufol7mBecause once you’ve gone to 120hz+ it’s hard to go back even just for productivity.

Got 14" Lenovo with 4800u with 16GB RAM and 2 x M.2 for ~$785 and that in EU where prices are higher than US dollar prices.

were the surface laptop 3s this expensive at launch? this seems like a lot of money
ID: gufx7qyBasically. I worked in a store that sold them and I'm pretty sure they started at $999 for an i5/4GB RAM/128GB variant.

of you want more than a quadcore your only choice is AMD
