I have a 3700X, and I think my case has pretty decent cooling, but wanted to know if that would harm the processor in the long run, having the CPU run at 100% for a few hours.

Zero harm. There are CPUs out there that have likely been at near 100% for years and they are still working. Thermals are the only thing you need to worry about in that situation. If thermals are under control, nothing bad (in theory) should ever happen.
ID: gvhw42kID: gvim8hlIf the CPU isn't overclocked it should thermal throttle itself. While not ideal it will prevent damage. I used to do some long simulations on University computers and they only had stock Intel coolers. I never bothered to check thermals or frequency of the computer though. I'd just leave it running and come back later in the day or just leave it overnight.

I have ran my old Ryzen 5 2600 at 100% for about 4 days before, and ran my 5600x for about 12 hours at 100%, and have not had the processors outright fail or degrade at all. It is perfectly safe unless you are using unsafe voltages/sub-par cooling (above 95C in the 3700x's case).

It's bad in the sense that now instead of having 100000 hours, you only have 99997 hours of cpu-life left. The question you should be asking yourself is how good is your pc-case cooling and are you keeping the CPU under the thermal-throttle temperature..(?)

It will be fine, undervolt to reduce thermals/noise, power consumption and strain in the cpu though. I have a 3950x and locking it to 4Ghz all cores at 1.175v brings power down from 180w to under 100w, temps from 75 to 55 on an arctic 420mm AIO.. which is obviously plenty quiet 🙂

Nooo, I've been doing ton amount of stress testing with prime95, and my final test is 24h. Running for the 4th year right now, with the same overclocks. Also the 100% usage has been met many times. I did some password cracking, and it was running 24h straight bruteforcing a password.

As long as you have sufficient cooling and the temps are keep in operating range it will be perfectly fine.
I have had mine pinned at 100% for a very long periods before for various reasons to no detriment. That is what they are designed to do.

If you think running a cpu at 100% for three hours is bad, imagine what would happen to it in a Google datacenter 🙂 Granted, Google probably doesn't use 3700X due to low core count, but you get the idea.
CPUs are built to run 100% all the time.

There are people using a 3700x right now for content creation, scientific work, code build, math, virtualization lab, etc pedal down on their builds right now.
There isn't enough thermal load on an 8c to worry.
If you ran a 16c with substandard case cooling pegged on a cheapie mobo I'd be more concerned about vrm/psu longevity.

The concern I would have is cooling. If you have adequate cooling for your system, what difference would it make?

No, cpus are designed to be ran at 100% 24/7.

I used to run BOINC on an overclocked i5 750 about 24/7/365 for 4 years... you know helping those poor scientist do their calculations that tiny bit faster.... (it will put '100'*% load on your cpu (and Gpu these days) if you let it)
Still going good in my dads office pc these days 11 years later.
*100 in air quotes because some 100 are harder than others, even within boinc the dif was noticeable in power and thermals.
Anyways these things are designed to run at full tilt for years
