Dead Aim - 2003 Preview

For some reason I love the graphics of the PS2. Kinda makes horror games even scarier for some reason.

Yeah, I love ps2 graphics aswell and the brown palette on horror games, it makes it creepier and a dense ambient.

I recently got one again and been having an absolute blast replaying all my favorite horror games from that generation. No other console will ever match the PS2

I agree. Something strangely soothing but also really good at keeping you tense and uncomfortable at the same time (because that's what horror's always about). The increased blockiness of the graphics and the focus on gameplay itself over looking as visually appealing as possible.

Don't get me wrong because there are still a ton of brilliant horror titles that have been coming out over the past few years, but nothing will hit the way horror games in the late 1990s and early-to-mid 2000s do.

Thanks for sharing this, OP. I really like your retro page posts and the sub you main it with.

On topic, seeing this just made me realize why it was sort of easy for me to adapt to RE7 and RE8's first person perspective: Capcom already made me try it decades ago.

This, and PS1's RE Gun Survivor. Too bad both of these games are just something I cleared once and never looked back.

Thanks, mate!

Of the entire series, this is probably the only RE game that I would call "underrated", especially compared to the previous Survivor games.

I legit enjoy RE Survivor on PS1 for what it is: a straight forward shooter with janky controls with branching pathways for some variety (I believe there are a total of three different points where you can pick one of three paths). All in all, it's a simple and short game.

Dead Aim from a design standpoint is a proper Resident Evil game. It just happens to have first person mechanics as well. Instead of a linear shooter adventure, you explore, find keys, backtrack, manage your inventory, catch your breath in Save Rooms (with one of the best and simplest Save Room Themes in the series).

I really enjoyed my time with this game, headshots are extremely satisfying on zombies (the company that made Dead Aim also made Umbrella Chronicles). If there are any fans of the classic style of RE who haven't played this, I would definitely recommend it.

One of the stranger things about the game is the translation (or at least I suspect it's the translation). Between the back of the game case and the game itself, Bruce's name transitions between McGivern and McGavin, and often times the subtitles do not match the spoken dialogue.

I had a lot more fun with it than I expected, but there's zero resource management. When every save room comes with 6 boxes of pistol ammo it might as well be House of the Dead. Which I love! But there's no survival part

It's definitely not as intensive as previous games, really the resource management equates to how much handgun ammo you want to stock up on at the cost of more powerful but limited ammo for shotguns and other weapons.

So it's very "light" but it's more than its predecessor, RE Survivor, where you can pick up everything in sight with no limit.

Underrated game.

This game has the best save room theme in the series. Yes I said it

Its lovely isn't it?

Its nice to see this game and the article get such a warn response in the comments. Most tines when I bring this game up nobody has even heard of it.

I wish they had done more with these characters. But at the same time I like that RE has this expanded universe of one shots showing similar experiences/incidents to our main storyline/characters.

Dead Aim is a good game and a well mix of 1st and 3rd person perspective.

Anybody else play this without the light gun? That is true horror.

ID: gwb2k6c

I couldn’t do it. The gameplay was terrible for me and I couldn’t get through it.

I couldn’t find a damn gun when I got it on ps2 so I had to beat it with the controller. I still remember unlocking 3rd person mode and how difficult the hunters were on a controller.

Had some much fun playing this game, kind of wish I had had the light gun controller to play this with.

I recall getting to a point of trying to speedrun this game, could never do better than 30 minutes though.

"Umbrella sends in its own man to destroy the zombies and take out their creator."

This is as true to the lore as the WildStorm comics.

One of my favourite games in the series.

11 : Anonymous2021/04/29 16:56 ID: gwbe51f

The survivor kinda looks like Ethan

12 : Anonymous2021/04/29 19:23 ID: gwc1cbs

Hey this was a fun game. Interesting concept for sure, I still have my copy.

When actual journalists did their job and enjoyed it.
