I don't even understand what I just watched with this part of the Computex presentation.

Here is Lisa Su, an insanely professional and talented CEO who turned this company from near bankruptcy to thriving. And she's telling the world with a straight face, during a crazy GPU shortage, that you're going to be able to play AAA titles on your car's infotainment.

Nah, these GPUs aren't for self driving or machine learning tech, they're so you can sit in your car and play titles on an oversized iPad instead of at a proper TV or desktop.

I don't understand why the allocation is as such. It makes no sense. You can't make this shit up. But here we are.

On the bright side, Zen 3 APUs will be available for those who can't afford a Tesla just for its GPU. But seriously, I'm glad these are finally going to be available for the public to buy!

I see what you did there!

I know AMD has been itching to get into automotive for a while. And this would be interesting to see normally. But during a GPU shortage, especially since Lisa mentioned it being a discrete GPU, it seems like a really bad time. I take pride in AMD and being an engineer there, but I am also a consumer, and that makes me sensitive to concerns like this.

Per silicon, I will say there is a whole chain of processing and testing, and ultimately the shortage is a bit more complicated than that. Linus Tech Tips did an excellent video on this.

Personally in my 3 I've only played games a few times. However, I see this as a huge plus for the backseat passengers especially if there's an option for a larger screen.

Just to add some context about volume, because these are only going in the Model S & X, they will only sell 100-120k of those per year (combined), once they've fully ramped the new production lines.

So, accounting for when this is happening, and production ramps not being immediate, this will only take ~100k 6700 XT dies out of the consumer market, before RDNA3 launches on 5nm (or 6nm?) in 2022.

(i.e. Tesla will probably only sell ~100k Model S & X combined between now and RDNA3 launch)

Then, after that, the semiconductor shortage should be over, and also consumer leading-edge won't be on 7nm any more, so effectively these 100-120k a year ongoing won't be taking away from consumer supply.

I will say it's not all about 7nm capacity. There are several processing and testing steps done at and beyond the foundry that are process independent.

This is more of a PR flex than a revenue play as of now. Model S & X are $90K+ cars, realistically and given Tesla's production ramp history, they are going sell ~50K at best by the end of the year, when the first production unit won't even hit the road until late June.

Compounding the fact that they are likely using Navi 23, the smallest RDNA 2 die so far, a week of PS5 likely use up more wafers than 6 months of Model S + X.

It’s a big deal for the business (read: investment community) that AMD has been able to break into the automotive space.

Regardless of how gamers feel about the GPU shortage, anyone can sell GPUs right now. But to break into a new segment that can be hard to get into is big.

And sure, AAA gaming in a car is nonsense. But it’s not about that. It’s about demonstrating AMD’s ability to provide a certain level of graphics performance to a new category of customer.

The long and short of it is that other vehicle OEMs have reason to consider AMD for their future needs. This means that 4-6 years from now we may see more cars that use AMD hardware. If AMD didn’t close this, 4-6 years from now that could have been someone else.

This is true, and AMD has been itching to break into automotive for a long time. If the opportunity arises, it makes sense from a business perspective to take it. If we said no, then Tesla just asks Nvidia and they might very well say yes. The GPU shortage is short term, this opportunity is long term.

The timing kinda sucks, the application is absolutely ridiculous, but I think with that in mind it'd be stupid not to take it.

I honestly doubt AMD and Lisa Su would be so stupid as to sell chips to Tesla in this market for use in cars instead of to use them for graphics cards unless it was for a hefty profit.

Every car with a LCD needs some kind of GPU to process all the output information. Every Tesla already has a GPU for that, but not from AMD up until now.

A powerful GPU can be used for more than entertainment, it's also good for displaying things like the current FSD status, navigation data, and potentially also process information for an AR HUD, if they every implement one.

Tesla are in the lead for fully generalised self-driving, so they're assuming they'll be able to do a software update in the (no-so-distant) future to enable the car to properly drive itself (level 4 or 5).

So then, obviously, once the car is fully self-driving it makes sense to have a whole software ecosystem and powerful entertainment computer within the car.

I'd imagine you'll be locked out from playing while driving at least. But distracted driving is a massive issue for sure, and I wish people would stop taking driving for granted. Driving is fun and useful, but dangerous as well.
