- [HUB] AMD Radeon RX 6800M Review, Is Nvidia's Laptop GPU Monopoly Over?
-
While some might be disappointed they couldn't outright beat a 3080 this is actually really phenomenal performance. Of the whole Nvidia laptop GPU lineup, seems like it only really loses (barely) to the full fat 3080, of which the cheapest laptop I think goes for $2200 and most way above that.
ID: h0kfw2nID: h0kh3a5Apparently this laptop will cost around $1600-1700. A typical RTX 3070 laptop would easily cost $1800.
ID: h0kiw3aWe'll see. If MSRP is $1700, it won't stay there for long in reality given this near (165W) 3080 level of performance, especially with the current shortages. I'm guessing it dunks on any 3080 below 130W too.
ID: h0kl473The TUF DASH 3070 is $1500 new lmao.
ID: h0lrs3kIt going cheaper than 3080 - 3070 laptop is also kind of a good position for AMD as well. It might not be as fast as 3080M but it's faster than 3070M and it's even cheaper than it. As long as you only care about rasterization performance, it seems like a decent deal.

Interesting that Tom's Hardware found much different results.
Also did HWU swap the ram on the Nvidia laptops as well for their testing? Obviously those laptops would also benefit from much lower latency with the better ram kit.
ID: h0kst12AFAIK they use the same ram kit for all of their reviews.
ID: h0kuwbcGood to know and definitely more fair.
But lets be honest, 99.9% of users don't upgrade their laptops or change out components. Most won't even enter the BIOS. So swapping memory to compare laptops isn't exactly a 'fair' comparison. What should have been done is to show the laptop out of box performance and then add the tuned/memory swap charts at the end or after. It's misleading to regular customers who may skip through or expect similar performance only to be disappointed.
They're essentially advocating voiding your warranty to get better performance which is on both AMD and Asus. Especially since this laptop meets the AMD Advantage branding and should be ready to go out of box.
ID: h0ljopdOk great.

I took a look at the thumbnail to this video and made it as far as 5:25 before I skipped around to the graphs. The last thing I heard was that the RAM was swapped out because he wanted to make it fair for the ROG Strix G15. I believe the phrased he used was "apples to apples" no?
I then look at the graphs and notice that, once again as is tradition for HUB, the CPU's aren't the same. If they were really interested in an apples to apples comparison then why not pair up the ROG Strix G15 to the ROG Strix Scar 17? Maybe I'm just dumb but that seems like a more even pair (price not withstanding).
I suppose someone is going to say they can only review / pair up what they have on hand but come on. Are you really going to tell me they could acquire all these ASUS products and somehow not the ROG Strix Scar 17?

They've competition, but AMD should've routed them with the advantage they hold right now in the desktop space. I was hoping that with 256-bit bus, they'd able to put in Navi21. At least in some special high premium laptop.
ID: h0k16rkWhat advantages are those?
ID: h0k2j4tHigher efficiency due to far better clocks and arguably better process node. But they're nullified since AMD have to use a smaller chip to compete.
ID: h0k1q7rEfficiency?
ID: h0ke60hThere's room for a 6900M based on N21 die. 150W, should be very good at those power target.
ID: h0khoriYes it's actually pretty surprising that AMD was able to match 3080 laptop GPU which is based on a far more powerful GA104 die with a Navi 22 die. Basically NVIDIA had to use a more powerful silicon to match the performance of 6800M
ID: h0k4eqwThey are able to, but they didn't, unfortunately.
ID: h0kw23bStill need OEM buy in and maybe OEMs don't think they can sell an all AMD laptop at above $2k. If OEMs won't sell it then making it is a bit pointless

If this can hit within the 1% average performance difference of a mobile 3080, while being $500 cheaper, this is a huge fucking win for AMD, despite having no mux switch and lack of proper RAM components.

not really

I wish we could buy one, especially the 1440p P3 gamut version.

Is it possible to undervolt the 6800M like the desktop 6800?

Yea, although it's not as good as the 3080, it's significantly cheaper. In typical AMD fashion, 6800m slots in perfectly in the line up and Radeon mobile is definitely on Nvidia's radar now. Tho I'm more curious about the 6600m Vs 3060 for my budget xD
