AMD ZEN4 and RDNA3 architectures both rumored to launch in Q4 2022

I really can't withhold my excitement for RDNA3 chiplet design. I have so much hope for it, and if it at all follows Ryzen's disruption of the CPU market, next year is going to be amazing.

Not just from a massive performance increase, but from the possible massive gains in power efficiency, and also in the much higher good chip yields.

ID: h0y1yek

Given how ridiculously expensive RX6000 graphics cards now, and given they any of them literally don't exist on Steam hardware survey despite being released half a year ago, one wonders if 7000 series might share same fate.

ID: h0y382b

I'm hopeful that the chiplet design can help assuage some production issues if it means higher yields, but that would only be if they focus on a midrange lower profit margin card.

ID: h0you5r

Hey, there's at least the one that I'm using! Those cards are AMAZING!

ID: h0yoz7v

I assume that the supply problem on AMDs side will only subside once Consoles reach some amount of market saturation. They probably have agreements to adhere to. Consoles eat some of the production capacity and after that CPUs eat the rest due to better yields and margins.

As long as CPUs and Consoles aren't in ample supply, GPUs will be even worse.

Im guessing Nvidia will have the Lovelace RTX 4000 series out before this while RNDA3 will be the first MCM GPU's on the market beating RTX 5000 Hopper MCM cards to the market.

How any of these will stack up performance wise is anyone's guess at this point.

ID: h0wrzzb

Im guessing Nvidia will have the Lovelace RTX 4000 series out before this while RNDA3 will be the first MCM GPU's on the market beating RTX 5000 Hopper cards.

It's gonna be really close.

From everything we've seen so far, Ada Lovelace will be fabbed on Samsung 5nm though with a new fab that's being built right now and is supposed to have high volume production H2 2022.

So depending how quick Samsung can polish out their fab (the process is yielding and fine since a while now), we could see RTX 4000 a month or two before RDNA3.

Though note, Samsung 5nm is not a full node shrink vs Samsung 7nm, whereas TSMC 5nm is a full node shrink vs TSMC 7nm. RDNA3 and Zen4 will both be on TSMC 5nm so from a pure manufacturing perspective, AMD will have an edge (just like they had with RDNA2 vs Ampere).

RNDA3 will be the first MCM GPU

Correct

beating RTX 5000 Hopper cards

We have absolutely no idea if that's going to be a thing because Hopper will also be MCM according to I believe kopite7kimi. Also, Hopper is the Ampere-next-next arch that is focused on compute and data center (ADL is purely gaming), the H100 in the new DGX is going to be a money printing machine for Nvidia (again). So we have no idea if Nvidia spins out Hopper for gaming like they did with Ampere or if they will pull a Volta and just keep it for the data center.

TSMC's 5nm should be extremely mature by late 2022, and RDNA3 was originally scheduled for late 2021. Considering both of those factors, I'd have expected AMD to target June-September 2022 for the RDNA3 launch.

I think AMD are best served doing what they've done over the last three years: focus on executing, targeting competitors' products regardless of whether the competitor maintains their release cadence or not.

I just had a look at their flagship GPUs over the last few years:

(August 2017) Vega 64: huge disappointment, a year late, broken drivers, 1070 competitor with much higher energy usage, became a 1080 competitor after 6 months of driver fixes, terrible efficiency, nowhere close to a 1080 Ti (February 2019) Radeon VII: decent card, stopgap product, broken drivers, 2080 performance with much higher energy usage, awesome for workstation tasks, not that far from a 2080 Ti at 4K (July 2019) 5700 XT: great card, six months late, hit and miss drivers which were only really fixed 6 months after launch, 2070 Super competitor despite costing $100 less, is now faster than a 2070 Super thanks to driver updates, worse power efficiency than Turing December 2020) 6900 XT: superb card, launched only 2 months after Ampere, rock solid drivers on launch day, beats the 3090 at 1080p/1440p despite costing $500 less, better power efficiency than Ampere

Edit: added comments on timing

We can only hope RDNA3 continues this trend, and that Intel's DG2 introduces a third viable GPU option.

I for one do not want to have to consider another $1200 GPU from Nvidia with half the RAM it should have.

ID: h0wpdlm

At very best Nvidia will resfresh GPUs around Intel DG2 release, so Q4 2021(considering it will not top 3060ti/3070 by leaks, they can just release 3060s at very least, there is too much space in between 3060 and 3060ti, and maybe they will release 3050/3050ti/1660 successor?)

Ampere next will be in Q4 2022, so it will be released together with RDNA3. It will be interesting to see prices for next GPUs, as it will be based on post-COVID silicon prices.

ID: h0xni6a

I really hope DG2 smashes into the market at full force will be a welcome edition if it's as good as Intel are making it out to be.

And end to the duopoly?

ID: h0y9cxu

based on post-COVID silicon prices.

Expect them to be high - even if supply normalizes. Intel are really needed to pick up some slack in the lower end of the GPU market if we don't want to see a duopoly.

ID: h0xhttt

Going to be a lot of pissed customers that will finally pick up a 3000 series Nv card late 2021 or 2022, then the 4000 series comes right out.

ID: h0ya41b

Don't expect fab demand to return to normal levels anytime soon. Nvidia probably do do want an early 2022 launch - whether they can pull one off is another question.

ID: h0wlbm9

Im guessing Nvidia will have the Lovelace RTX 4000 series out before this while RNDA3 will be the first MCM GPU's on the market beating RTX 5000 Hopper cards.

Why do you think that? I wouldn't expect Nvidia's next generation until Q4 2022 either.

ID: h0wqzco

Based on their cadence? turing in sept 2018, ampere in sept/oct 2020. I see no reason why late Q3 or early Q4 wouldn't be when they release lovelace. They generally do release before AMD though.

4 : Anonymous2021/06/07 12:25 ID: h0wgmk2

But the Zen 3 XT refreshes would be the ones with 3D cache or we have to wait for Zen 4 for that?

ID: h0whpfx

But the Zen 3 XT refreshes would be the ones with 3D cache

Zen 3 XT has no V-cache according to the same leaker. Click the link in the article.

ID: h0wifij

It seems the XT would be a 5000 refresh and the 3D stacked would be the 6000 series, still on 7nm and before Zen 4. That timeline doesn't make much sense.

ID: h0wmwwr

Well maybe not Zen 3 XT, but maybe Zen 3 XTX, or whatever. AMD said they have something with Zen 3 and 3D Cache in the pipeline, so that's probably true.

ID: h0wzfki

There is some confusion. AMD are definitely releasing a Zen 3 based Ryzen CPU with V-cache into the retail market, but whether it'll officially be dubbed "Zen 3" or "Zen 3+" is anybody's guess.

Zen 3+ was supposed to be a refreshed Zen 3 released around Alder Lake's launch, but it's now not clear if it'll launch at all. It's possible it's been cancelled in favour of "Zen 3D".

5 : Anonymous2021/06/07 17:36 ID: h0xl6r2

So give up RDNA2 and buy RDNA3 ? I think It's worth.

6 : Anonymous2021/06/07 14:26 ID: h0wucs2

Does that mean I can finally find RDNA2 and Zen 3 in stocks?

ID: h0wxq7d

Zen 3's been in stock for a few months now. couple of models have even dropped below MSRP in the last few weeks.

ID: h0wy4cd

Zen 3 is easy enough to find now. Picked up two 5900X and two 5800X for MSRP without any issues.

ID: h0xndgd

Where are you finding the 5900X at MSRP? I can find it for $700, but everywhere else it's been out of stock when I've looked.

7 : Anonymous2021/06/07 12:24 ID: h0wgj2n

It makes sense, I was hoping for sooner though so I wouldn't be stuck on my 1080Ti until then.

ID: h0xuafy

look at this high roller here, while the peons are still using r9 290.

ID: h0xzl1k

1080ti will hold strong with AMD FidelityFX I hope. Im gonna wait until either Fall or next Spring to upgrade

8 : Anonymous2021/06/07 14:29 ID: h0wur7r

Phew... thought that said 2021. 2022 makes sense though. Basically every 2 years.

9 : Anonymous2021/06/07 18:24 ID: h0xs2tc

seems kinda late for zen4

10 : Anonymous2021/06/07 16:39 ID: h0xd0f3

Meanwhile i'm still on Polaris ._.

ID: h0xji7n

Hey the longer the wait the bigger the upgrade and the better the value and maybe even a little bit more money to spend on it in 18 months. Just hope the prices aren't terrible still and we have reduced msrp

ID: h0xno3z

In 2019 I had the chance to upgrade. I had the chance buy a 5700XT for MSRP and I didn't. I will never forgive myself for that

11 : Anonymous2021/06/07 12:34 ID: h0whjvm

When does RDNA2 release?

ID: h0wtezu

A few months after Ampere. I don't foresee any issues securing either one unless bots, miners and scalpers suddenly become a thing, but they haven't until now, so I'm hopeful.

ID: h0x954e

yeah, cant wait to preorder my 6800xt

ID: h0xj24r

What would really be bad is if we had a global pandemic on top of all of that.

12 : Anonymous2021/06/07 13:46 ID: h0wpfmi

Damn, I was hoping RDNA3 would be out mid 2022, that would also have reduced capacity pressure on TSMC.

ID: h0x3sgk

Well, RDNA3 is scheduled for late 2021 as per AMD's latest public roadmaps. Assuming a COVID delay or strategic shift, I'd have thought their priority would be to get 7900/7800/7700 XT GPUs out there before Nvidia's Ampere successor, perhaps in mid-2022 as you said.

Apple will have largely moved to TSMC's 3nm by mid-2022, so that should free up 5nm wafers for AMD. Perhaps a Q3 RDNA3 release is more realistic.

13 : Anonymous2021/06/07 16:31 ID: h0xbsys

Will zen 4 support ddr4? Or just ddr5?

ID: h0xnqu2

It seems Intels 12th gen are reportedly supporting DDR4 / 5 and AMDs next one will be strictly DDR5 for now although I'd assume they might try and make it DDR4 compatible.

ID: h0xhmwe

just ddr5 afaik

ID: h0xnydc

I not sure of that. When DDR4 came out, some boards supported both DDR3 and DDR4.

14 : Anonymous2021/06/07 18:28 ID: h0xsj5z

sounds like i'll be doing a full system upgrade in q4 2022 then, fingers crossed..

15 : Anonymous2021/06/07 17:11 ID: h0xho9d

Still on a 3900X. I want a 5900X but seeing this 3D chip stuff, should I wait? I don’t really need an upgrade and would rather maximize the Longitivity of my X570 board.

ID: h0xj719

What do you do with your pc? Do you NEED a. Better CPU? In most cases the answer is no

ID: h0yfe4t

Look at this guy only buying what he ”needs”. Get on the shiny object consumer hype train with the rest of us.

16 : Anonymous2021/06/07 16:39 ID: h0xd0rv

Good for those who are able to pick one up I suppose. The last thing I read indicated that the chip shortage would endure through at least until Q4 of next year.

17 : Anonymous2021/06/07 17:58 ID: h0xof3j

Are you saying I will be able to buy an RDNA3 card before I can buy an RDNA2 card (at recommended retail price)?

18 : Anonymous2021/06/07 18:15 ID: h0xqtcr

And we still won't be able to buy it.
