- Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition: Xbox Series X|S Tech Review - Digital Foundry
-
There is a PS5 comparison video coming, but as the OP clarifies, this is a tech review, not a straight comparison and we're unlikely to get one from DF specifically for the PS5.

Been saying it since the specs were released, but the Series S isn't going to make it through this new gen without turning games into Switch ports. Already lowering to the 500p's and this generation hasnt even really started.
ID: h1ztscgID: h1zughjAnd not only on the GPU. They reduced the CPU and RAM speeds as well, all weakening it further.
ID: h20hup2Wasn't that the point of the series s that you can play next gen games with lower graphics settings? Of course it will be turned down like Forza Horizen 5 that only has 1080p but every person who bought that console should know that already and the console was more meant for people without 4k tv that have not not much money anyway.
ID: h20ku5cIt was marketed as a budget next gen console up to 1440p120fps yet most if not all games that have a 120fps mode are running below 1080p

Watching now. The first console game to use RT global illumination is super exciting. This is what we can expect from 2023-2024+ exclusives.

Agreed! I'm super excited to see what 4A and others can do on later on in the generation if this is what we're getting already!
ID: h208gnvActualy i think RE8 used it first on consoles
ID: h20f1mc[deleted]
ID: h20eg0qDon't get too excited looks like it's on "lower than the lowest PC RT settings"
ID: h20f6uuIt still looks really good and a lot better than the last-gen version but yeah PC looks much better and has ray-traced reflections. Series S looks horrible, they should have done 30fps instead of resolutions half of 1080p lol
ID: h2092udReturnal used global illumination as well.
ID: h20ap1bNot for the visuals

It looks phenomenal and pleasantly surprised that the performance is that stable, to make the game look like that and still play at 60fps, great job by 4A.
Series S on the other hand, looks like shit, think it'd be better to give a 60fps patch to the original game, the image quality at 512p is awful and the pop in doesn't look too good either.
-
I wonder how the PS5 version will stack up to the Series X? I imagine it will have a slightly lower resolution perhaps.
-
Yes this is looking at the Xbox version but it's still very relevant as the PS5 version will of course be similar to the Series X version!
ID: h1zdzc0Why not just wait for the PS5 tech review?
ID: h1zfb6pWith Control they did the PS5 tech review and then didn't do an Xbox tech review because it was very similar so they just did a performance comparison video after that.
It's very rare to get separate full tech reviews for both consoles. I expect the same here as it will be very similar with differences discussed in a comparison video. This video isn't about comparing though, it's about the techniques and stuff used!
Also me and many others don't own Metro Exodus yet so this is a great opportunity to get an idea of what to expect before June 18th.
ID: h1zxitbThey most likely won't do a tech review specific for PS5, more likely to just have a comparison video.

TLDR anyone?
ID: h1zq37l"Series X - RT 60fps. DRS with native resolution operating at anything between 1080p and 2160p but 1728p was the highest on Series X.
Series S - RT 60fps. DRS with native resolution operating at anything between 512p (happens in heavy areas) and 1080p, but 864p is common.
PC settings used in Series X are lower than the lowest PC RT settings. Other settings medium to high"
ID: h1zyy33PC settings used in Series X are lower than the lowest PC RT settings
Wow is that normal in other games that use RT also.
ID: h1zzmqn512p, good lord. Series S smh
ID: h2097aqDamn. It kicks ass considering how intense RT can be?

Yep I feel bad for anyone getting baited into buying that console because it's only $300. Within a year or two it probably won't even be able to render at 1080p with any advanced settings like ray tracing turned on.
MS compromised hard on the GPU to keep the price down. Series X has around 12 TFlops of raw performance and Series S is all the way down at 4 TFlops.
