Because all my games kept crashing with "video driver timeout" type errors.
After exhausting every possible solution GPU-side, and cursing everyone making drivers for AMD with eternal torment, I had the brilliant idea of screwing with the RAM settings and guess what, turns out Corsair sold me premium RAM that dies unless slightly downclocked from the advertised frequency of 3200 Mhz down to 3133 Mhz.
I guess today I've found out that GPU-related errors can point towards a RAM defect.

One important fact to remember is that the DOCP/XMP Profiles that RAM AIBs advertise, they are all overclocks.
So whenever you have issues, always worth downclocking your RAM just in case it cannot support the advertised DOCP/XMP speeds.

ID: h2xmlexWhat is reported on the box is a "factory overclock profile" loaded in a memory chip inside the Ram stick and infact XMP/DOCP is disabled by default in BIOS. So if you have any kind of issue at that "rated speed" no one is in obligation to refund/taking action.

I have been saying this for over a year now.
The moment people started disabling xmp, issues started to disappear.
If you have a friend with an Nvidia card, I would test the ram at the faster speeds.
It seems like something about the 5xxx series hits ram harder
ID: h2vi1glYeah, unfortunately my acquaintances are few and they aren't desktop PC users, otherwise I'd love to do a bunch of tests with different combinations of hardware.
So maybe it's not so much the RAM itself being defective but some issue/"bug" with the hardware combination present in my system and other people with similar problems?
In my case it's 3200Mhz CL16 RAM (as advertised), Ryzen 5 3600, Radeon 5600 XT, B450 MoBo.
Which is weird, since I'm guessing it's a pretty popular configuration - considering the value/price was great when I got it in 2020 before GPUs became 3-4 times more expensive than normal.
Maybe AMD's XMP specifically (as opposed to Intel's) isn't reliable?

ID: h2vl16qOften RAM kits only get verified on Intel systems. If you want to be sure that a kit is running on your system, you need to check the Qualified Vendor List of your Motherboard. This also applies to things like Servers, Workstations, and, theoretically, Intel systems.

Corsair has trash ram. Mixing Samsung and Hynix within the same SKUs. This can really mess up if you don’t know. I was helping my friend built her first pc and somehow her lot of ram was Samsung and Hynix. She was having a lot of issues and I changed it out and her computer stopped crashing….

But right now they're mostly shipping versions 4.32 or 4.33, which are Samsung c-die, that they absolutely don't know how to bin properly to save their life. Sometimes it won't run at XMP (usually about 50%, but since most people don't enable XMP, many people never know) and you'll get lucky enough that it's just a little out and you can find a close enough speed that will work, but still, it's a huge scam.

, I'd check the version numbers on your memory sticks (it will only be on the barcode labels of the sticks themselves), and check each stick if you bought more than one kit, since you could have wound up with 2 different versions, but if you got 4.32 or 4.33, I'd return them and get any other brand if you are still in your return period, because there's no guarantee that just down-clocking alone will solve it for good, especially if they mis-binned dies on the same stick (which you'd only know by running a memory test). Also c-die is voltage sensitive, so it could be degrading the modules and not even know it, making them become more unstable over time. It's real garbage when it's sold by Corsair. G-skill can bin c-die just fine, but Corsair treats it like b-die and bins it loosely and it just doesn't work that way.ID: h2wsi0gMy friend got Hynix and Samsung in the SAME BOX!! it super fucked the system. I solved a lot of system stability issues by pushing my rams voltage to 1.39-1.4 instead of the common 1.35 in Xmp profiles.

I have been posting on here for over a year telling people this. Especially when people are blaming their AMD GPUs. I’ve told people on here this and a lot of times they lashed out at me. A lot of the warzone Dev errors? Ram related.
I would tell them…it’s not your GPU, it is your ram, and I’m guessing that it is not QVL….and they would say QVL doesn’t matter…
Buying QVL ram is important esp on AMD builds if you want to ensure system stability. there is a lot of crap ram out there and it only continues to grow. You may also be able to configure non QVL ram to be stable and that’s perfectly fine too, however it is not always possible depending on the ram modules.
Updating mobo bios and having the chipset driver installed from the mobo website may also improve ram compatibility and stability.

These threads are posted all the time. I knew before I clicked you were going to mention RAM. A lot of people overclock their machines (not you OP, just in general) and then blame AMD Drivers when they face instability. Sad stuff.
Glad you got it sorted out though, OP! Perhaps look into a different / better kit if you've got the cash!

I once had this issue (video driver timeout) with a recent driver and I fixed it by uninstalling the videocard driver via device manager and completely reinstalling it after a reboot.
ID: h2vlghtYeah, that probably works most of the time but in my case, I tried at least a dozen different versions of the Radeon driver and Adrenaline software, plus the same drivers but without Adrenaline, unistalling via DDU and AMD Cleanup between tries. Screwing around with the drivers never worked, so it's deffo the RAM or something else in my rig that doesn't like when I set the RAM to 3200Mhz.

Your first mistake was buying corsair memory
you're lucky you got anything stable as countless corsair kits don't run stable on ryzen even at below 2133mhz even if they are rated for 3600

Are you sure the timings just aren't set correctly? Or more often, the voltage? I always look at the product specs and by default lots of mobos like to put the ram at 1.2v by default when a lot of kits are spec'd for 1.35. Once I set voltage to match what's spec'd from the manufacturer everything works perfectly.

I feel this. I was having the same issues where graphics drivers would time out. Turns out my PSU sas faulty.
ID: h2vzfcsYeah that's also a possible cause! In my OP I said I checked for every GPU related issue, but really I checked for every issue for every component, including replacing PSU. When I built this rig I recycled my old PSU, but after all the videogame crashes, I started to think the PSU was faulty (it was 10 years old, only component I recycled) so I replaced it with a new one, but I guess it wasn't necessary, considering the actual problem somehow stems from RAM configuration, and this issue persisted even after replacement.
Still, the PSU I was using was starting to have a slight coil whine that wasn't there when it was new, so I don't regret replacing it, better safe than sorry!
Also you're not supposed to use the same PSU for 10+ years anyway but whatever.

What are your temps like? I've had the exact same issue with demanding games, and after logging temps was getting some very high spikes. It looks like putting a case fan blowing directly onto my GPU has fixed it.

Temps are fine, in fact I've checked within the AMD software AND IRL with thermometers and the rig is actually pretty damn cold.

Same issue I had when I owned a 5700 XT. Not sure if it's the mobo or the 2600x + GPU combo but it did NOT like 3200mhz, it resulted in a graphic driver bsod. I had to clock it to 2933 in XMP.
Definitely no issues on 6800xt or 5000x series chips.

AMD and XMP do not work well together. Unless you follow SPD kits, disable XMP and set the timings, clock, and voltage manually. I have never had an issue running at XMP spec with XMP disabled on any of my AMD systems.

Memory errors are devilish, I had certain games crash without being detected by memory tests.

I started getting video driver timeout errors every few minutes after upgrading to 21.6.1. After uninstalling, using DDU, and trying different drivers over the course of a day you know what finally fixed it?
Resetting the shader cache.
Maybe that'll help someone else out there.

May I ask how you determined the proper ram speed to adjust to? I have an R9 5900X, x570 Mobo, and 6800XT and I feel like I’m getting more bugs and frame drops than I should with the 6800XT. Open to ideas and willing to tinker. I have TeamGroup 3600mhz ram.

I've had my share of 5600XT issues over the past several months across two entirely different machines (technically three since I essentially replaced every component in the first system). Even sent back to Gigabyte for an RMA to which they send back that it's working fine in their test environment.
The current working "solution" was to do another driver-only install after dd
reset and disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox when I got it back because just doing a minimal install still timedout. Where it would timeout in under a minute in Furmark it's been tested three times for over an hour each.The most bizzarly frustrating experience I've ever had and I don't know if I really fixed it or just made it a more rare occurrence since those were steps I also took in the past.

I recently transferred to a small form factor case. I had 4 sticks of crucial ballistix 3200mhz ram installed in my old system. These were 2 kits bought separately.
I grabbed 2 sticks from that build and tossed them into my new ITX board and completed the build. After booting and installing drivers and stuff, my 6900xt would randomly black screen, or the driver would crash mid game.
I knew it wasn't the card because it worked fine in my last build. The old psu was a 750 watt and the new one was 850 watts; so I knew it wasn't the PSU. So had to be something else.
I remembered reading about all the black screen problems people were having and remembered most people saying it was RAM compatibility problems and sure enough it turned out to be that I had mixed the kits together.
So despite these sticks being the exact same brand, frequency and timing, they caused all sorts of issues with the card. Goes to show that a lot of these driver problems can definitely be due to RAM instability. Nvidia drivers must be far more tolerant, or maybe it can be said that AMD drivers are operating on a knife's edge in terms of optimizing and error tolerance.

Could you write what the specific model of your RAM kit is? I've got a LPX 3200 2x8GB kit that has Samsung E-dies. I've had issues in the past that were mostly resolved by reinstalling the OS, but I suppose I should keep an eye on my RAM as well.

This is nothing new, common knowledge for a while now. People dont want to hear it and dont want to do any diagnostics, typically.

Yeah if you have a 2000 series CPU, some of the CPUs and boards compatible with that CPU actually won't let you run XMP without mem errors. It could be related to your issue, I have encountered this with every person with a 2000 series processor.

B450 boards can have issues with 3600. 3200 is fine.

3200 cl16 and premium don't realy go together unless we talking about like 4-5 year old dimms, otherwise it's likely it's the bottom of the barrel bins in there what you got. I would check the die types with typhoon burner maybe it's older trash like AJR or something that did not play well with ryzen systems in my expirience.

I can accept this current workaround of setting the RAM frequency to 3133 Mhz. I don't think upgrading to 3600Mhz CL16 or CL18 is worth the money, nor do I think I can notice the difference IRL, and even less so between 3200 and 3133 Mhz on the same memory banks with the same latency settings.
The really annoying part is how long it took for me to find a workaround for the CTDs that were turning my recent gaming rig into an oversized paperweight. Even now that I finally found a reliable workaround, I'm still not sure what the real problem is in the first place.

3200 vs 3133mhz yeah prob difference is not realy that big of a deal but 3600 cl 16 vs that in cpu bound things like let's say competetive shooters with low setting the difference can be big. Like even 10-20% big. But thats more of a exeption for E-sport titles and such, realy depends are you the type that plays competetive games or not.
Some r5 3600 could not maintain 1800mhz IF clock so running 3600mhz Ram speeds on those would be unstable aswell so that would be again a risk you would be takeing.
Edit: did you try manually setting your Ram subtimings? liek 3200 CL 16 but theres like sub timing 16(cl) 16(tRCD) 16(tRP) 20(tRAS) or such, sometimes you need to do that when the motherboard is not running them properly , you can check what timings your motherboard is running using like CPU-s Or also updateing motherboard Bios can fix memory compatability

OK. So I don't want to use XMP becasue it's overclock. Is there a RAM that is rated at 3600 by default meaning XMP can't be applied to it?
