Super FidelityFX – I’m blown away !

1 : Anonymous2021/06/23 13:41 ID: o6d242

Just installed the free Riftbreaker beta on steam. I play on a 55inch 4k 120hz oled tv with a Ryzen 3600x and GTX 1080.

So I got 70 FPS native all settings maxed. I enabled AMD FidelityFX in the game settings and get 120 fps, with no obvious loss of visual quality - a gain of 50 FPS (71%) on a 5 year old Pascal Nvidia card

To get 120fps in 4k is insane

Amazing - Thanks AMD

How the hell do you get fidelity , i cant find a dl link anywhere

3 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:26 ID: h2rrobr

you don't, it comes with the game

4 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:28 ID: h2rrtp6

I believe it's an in-game setting so it must be supported by the game.

5 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:39 ID: h2rt7p0

It has to be built into the game.

6 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:41 ID: h2rth2v

So that means shadowlands still on beta.

7 : Anonymous2021/06/23 15:06 ID: h2rwryl
8 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:48 ID: h2rue0l

As others have said, it's something that's implemented by the game.

There are currently two games you can try for free if you want to try it: The Riftbreaker and Kingshunt.

9 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:27 ID: h2rrqh9

It’s in the latest optional driver release 21.6.1. And only a hand full of games have it implemented at this time. /edited for spelling/

10 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:28 ID: h2rrwyf

You don't need any drivers, it's always implemented on game side. No drivers or GPU bound it is.

11 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:43 ID: h2rtqdh

It's in your new driver update.

12 : Anonymous2021/06/23 20:52 ID: h2t7q7f

Upscaling directly implies a loss of visual quality.

If you're not noticing it, then that's great, but surely there are details missing, even if they're small or irrelevant, unless the textures used are all already low resolution to begin with.

13 : Anonymous2021/06/23 22:57 ID: h2tn9ev

"with no obvious loss of visual quality" He said that though?

14 : Anonymous2021/06/24 02:48 ID: h2udeiz

The loss of quality is kind of obvious on anything other than 4k Ultra Quality. If people aren't noticing it or don't care, that's great, but this isn't a magic bullet. It does offer a very reasonable trade off for the performance improvement though. It's like going from Ultra to "high" or "medium". Yes, there are visual sacrifices, but sometimes you can accept a bit of blur or loss of texture detail for a 40% increase in frame rate; it's a much better solution than just turning the native resolution down.

FSR's biggest "issue" is that it's not necessarily better than already existing options. UE4's TAAU already seems to out perform it, and that's already outdated compared to UE5's TSR. Tried and true reconstruction techniques like those used by Insomniac or 4A are also superior in their particular implementations. This means we might not see FSR in big games where the developers can afford to make their own solutions that work better with their engine.

That being said, a lot of games (PC games especially) don't ship with any sort of resolution scale option, so FSR could very well become the default for games like that. If that's the case, then it will still serve a great purpose that brings the bottom line up for everyone.

15 : Anonymous2021/06/24 02:35 ID: h2uc01j

Do you think that upon reading "with no loss of visual quality" someone might interpret that as the move from native 4k to upscaled 4k being completely without sacrifice?

16 : Anonymous2021/06/24 08:58 ID: h2v6w86

THere is another thing that people aren't considering with the quality difference.

If I can play at low settings and get 60fps without FSR, but am able to now play at high settings at 60fps with FSR, then I will likely have a big graphics quality improvement.

17 : Anonymous2021/06/24 11:06 ID: h2vf5zi

That's really not how it works. If you want to do something like that then you have to drop your resolution.

18 : Anonymous2021/06/23 15:33 ID: h2s0dgx

Tagging for later to download free game

19 : Anonymous2021/06/23 23:51 ID: h2tte0a

Can you compare image quality in “quality” vs “native 75% render”?

20 : Anonymous2021/06/23 15:53 ID: h2s30wo

"blown away" ... right

Well if you're more critical of it, they might improve it vs praising them on v1.0

21 : Anonymous2021/06/23 16:23 ID: h2s73fz

Sooo. It shouldn't be praised for what it already is?

22 : Anonymous2021/06/23 17:19 ID: h2sfcs8

We need to ask ourselves what the alternatives are. FRS looks way better than just lowering the resolution, but that was the bare minimum in terms of expectations. How does it compare to temporal reconstruction techniques used by existing games? Digital Foundry found that Unreal Engine 4's TAAU produced a more detailed image for similar performance cost. This is a feature that is trivially easy for Unreal games to implement. Most AAA games already feature an in-house temporal upscaler of some sort.

23 : Anonymous2021/06/23 16:35 ID: h2s8rsx

They should improve on naming their settings first. ultra quality is ok the rest should be titled "performance", "ultra performance" and "high fps abstract art".

And the ultra quality is actually blowing my mind as well.

24 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:04 ID: h2rowo1

This whole hype is so weird, when i compared various Riftbreaker screenshots of 1080 p in performance mode to native 720 or 2160 p quality to native 1440 p i can literally not spot the difference. And on top of that FSR comes with quite the overhead.

At least in Riftbreaker it looks like you are actually better off lowering the resolution vs using this FSR. Other words, using the overhead of FSR would probably give you a better native image in riftbreaker.

I don't get why everyone is comparing fsr to the resolution it is upscaling to, when it should be compared to the quality and performance of the resolution it is upscaling FROM

The only use case i found was when you want to go below 720p and the built in resolution scale becomes too soft.

25 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:21 ID: h2rr0it

There is a huge difference. Check in the link below, and compare '50% native', vs 'FSR Performance' (which is also 50% of the native resolution+ FSR).

26 : Anonymous2021/06/24 16:45 ID: h2wi87u

I read the link and FSR is cool, but can we also appreciate that you can achieve the same results with a sharpening reshade at the exact same performance cost?

The only advantage of FSR is that it can be applied before the resolution is being scaled and therfore tackle jagged edges like fxaa better before it gets upscaled. I really want to believe in FSR but i haven't found any implementation yet that is worth all the hype. Remember: Sharpening has been always available at the exact performance as FSR while FSR has been in development for quite some time

27 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:31 ID: h2rs6bx

Many reviewers have observed that when you compare 1080p native vs 4K FSR Performance (which is also upscaling from 1080p), the 4K FSR Performance image looks superior compared to the 1080p native image, while also providing similar or marginally better performance.

28 : Anonymous2021/06/23 15:11 ID: h2rxe6t

I don't get why everyone is comparing fsr to the resolution it is upscaling to, when it should be compared to the quality and performance of the resolution it is upscaling FROM

But this way FSR will always have better image and lower performance. This is not what people want and is impractical since you are playing on a 1080p screen upscaled to 1440p? therefore "wasting" pixels

29 : Anonymous2021/06/23 14:43 ID: h2rtsap

Lol you're the only one who can't see it then.

30 : Anonymous2021/06/23 17:18 ID: h2sf5xf

Not enough Carbonium, build more SCVs err Pilons, err factories, that is it, factories!
I do see degradation on the image.
Playing at 4K all max including raytracing, 6900XT red devil ultimate.
Cannot see the FPS difference as I use embedded windows ones.. how do you enable it in Riftbreaker? it does not measure correctly with Super FFX enabled.

31 : Anonymous2021/06/24 04:00 ID: h2ul190

Congratulations on downloading more FPS.

32 : Anonymous2021/06/24 04:44 ID: h2uoyra

Why does none of this shit ever work for 2k res? Thats hard to run too ya know!

33 : Anonymous2021/06/24 05:09 ID: h2ur4nz

Are you playing at 4:2:0? I have a 1080ti and can only do 4k60 at 4:2:2, I do 1080p120 4:4:4 HDR for games on my LG CX 65". Til I get new GPU.

34 : Anonymous2021/06/24 12:36 ID: h2vmvph

It is amazing and i'm happy it works on amd, nvidia and hopefully intel.

35 : Anonymous2021/06/24 14:18 ID: h2vygky

It's more console graphics option coming to PC! They had that for years upscaling using lower resolution, each dev had it's way of doing it tought, on PC you have This now. You could use lower scaler option on PC for a while that lacked sharpness... the important thing is that if you're happy with it then good for you 🙂

You ok bro?

38 : Anonymous2021/06/23 17:10 ID: h2se18t

Is it on world of warcraft ? This feature

Is it on world of warcraft ? This feature

40 : Anonymous2021/06/23 17:16 ID: h2sewaz

No there's only 6 or so supported games at the moment (see and website). There will be more soon

41 : Anonymous2021/06/23 18:00 ID: h2sktqa

I'm excited but I hope this and dlss doesnt become a crutch so that devs stop optimizing games for native resolutions and start optimizing it for upscaling. If they do start doing that then older cards are just gonna start losing their usefulness again.

42 : Anonymous2021/06/23 17:34 ID: h2shdqg

How do you install fsr I have no idea.

43 : Anonymous2021/06/23 18:02 ID: h2sl4b2

You don't. It's a game side setting. Only 7 games have implemented it and it went live today. More game companies will be adding it in patches

44 : Anonymous2021/06/23 18:21 ID: h2snlmo

O okay yeah missed that part. Thank you I hope big game companies implement it in older titles like AC Odyssey, far cry 5 and deus ex mankind divided

45 : Anonymous2021/06/23 22:00 ID: h2tgix6

Would be lovely if Microsoft flight sim also adapts/implements this. Waiting for fps boost there

46 : Anonymous2021/06/24 03:56 ID: h2ukjyi

See if they can alleviate the CPU bottleneck with DX12 first.

47 : Anonymous2021/06/23 23:45 ID: h2tsowk

It's crazy to think that AI upsampling is probably the future of gaming.

Even now, DLSS 2.0 is pretty incredible and FSR looks very promising. In a few years, the loss in image quality will be so negligible that I don't understand why anyone would NOT use these technologies.

It could get to a point where devs actually bake it into games directly. Why would we need to render games at native resolution when these technologies can fill in the gaps? We can then have even better looking games from with the fps savings from AI upsampling.

E: downvoted for...?

48 : Anonymous2021/06/24 00:52 ID: h2u0c3y

This is really good to know, this current pandemic, plus global shortage has given us a greater appreciation for our old/aging hardware. Now if Nvidia decides to eat the humble pie and open up their DLSS2.2 technology, everyone could benefit....

49 : Anonymous2021/06/24 01:25 ID: h2u40ah

its like you can download RAM or something. Amazing!

51 : Anonymous2021/06/24 09:22 ID: h2v8bvw

I mean that's really great and all if you get 120Hz at 4k but why would you pretend it's native? It supports it but your card is too old. I have the Same LG 4k 120Hz OLED and you'd need a 3000 rtx or new amd card for HDMI 2.1 to be enabled so maximum you are getting native is 4k 60Hz. Please change that in your post otherwise it's misleading for others.
