Would 5600g worth it?

I'm really indecisive about which CPU I should get. I really want to get 5600x yet I won't be able to buy a decent GPU for a while, and I don't want to spend money on cheap GPUs. Additionally, I can't wait without visuals anymore as I need to use the PC asap since I've online classes (my laptop struggles when I share my screen)

Getting 5600g isn't a bad idea at all but I'll buy a GPU sooner or later and its performance with a GPU isn't that different than 3600.

Consequently, what do you guys suggest? I'm really open to ideas.

Remember that the GPU performance benchmarks you have seen in reviews pair the 5600G with a 3090 or similar top-tier card. If you plan to get a 6700 XT or something in that range, the bottleneck might be smaller. That's just an assumption though, until someone measures the performance with other cards we won't know.

3600 is still a solid option in 2021 in my opinion, but I'll have the same problem with buying 5600x.

I am on first gen Ryzen (1800X) paired with a 2080 Ti.

Does my CPU hold my GPU back? - Yes!
Is it still a good experience, even for high refresh? - Yes!

I've got a 240 Hz Alienware Monitor, and i can hit 240 Hz in Overwatch, and stay above 144 in Valorant at all times.

Just because you don't get the very highest performance CPU doesn't mean you aren't getting decent performance.

A 5600G will feel more than adequate with any GPU you'll eventually be able to afford to pair it with.

If you need the computer ASAP, then go for it. The only other option is getting a cheap GPU temporarily, and since you don't want to do that the 5600g is the best option.

A tad above 3600 CPU performance in gaming with AMD's integrated graphics is not a bad purchase at all. If, for whatever reason, you find you need extra CPU performance, you can always upgrade in a few years when things are cheap.

Depending on what you do, you might barely notice the difference anyways.

Okay, thanks.

The 5600G's official release date is a month from now, so unless you can get it now for some reason I think that you can postpone the decision. GPU availability is better now than it used to be, and there may be some more developments on that front by the time the 5600G is available. There may also be more reviews of the 5600G.

From the little I've seen (which is basically the Gamers Nexus review), the 5600G is somewhat better than the 3600 or 3700X in most games (although worse in productivity applications).

I don't want to spend money on cheap GPUs.

In the long run, that may be a better choice, but I can understand the reluctance.

Buying an i5 11400 instead is an option. Its performance is better than the 5600g and it’s cheaper. The iGPU isn’t as good but if you’re planning on getting a dGPU eventually that doesn’t matter as much.

Just make sure you get a good motherboard, I recommend the MSI b560 bazooka. Make sure you look up motherboard reviews before buying though, because some of them are really bad, especially the cheap asrock boards.

Edit: Also keep in mind if you go with an i5 11400 you can turn off power limits in bios to improve performance(if the motherboard and your CPU cooler is good enough to handle it), and B560 allows for XMP/memory overclocking so faster RAM wouldn’t be wasted.

I was planning on buying Intel but I've bought MSI b550m pro-vdh wifi on sale last week. I couldn't wait because my government was going to increase the taxes on electronic items' prices, so I had no choice. Also, I'm thinking of overclocking my CPU, which Intel's b560 series do not allow.

You don't need to overclock the cpu. They overclock themselves basically. You would get a bigger performance boost by buying good ram and tweaking it.

The days were you bought a 3.3 cpu and overclocked it to 5.0 increasing performance by 40% are long gone.

i am not sure if that is a good board for potential OCing

Not to be rude, but I strongly disagree with your advice. The 11400 is better only at well over 65W if you disable the powerlimit and the iGPU is not even half the performance. With B560 you can't OC the CPU and memory OC is still funky because of gear1/2. With a B560 you are stuck with an 8 cores as the only upgrade path (or 10 cores 10900 and lose PCIe 4.0 support). Also you lose SAM if you get an AMD graphic card. There is a reason why 11400 is cheaper, but it should be less than half the cost of a 5600G to be a viable option.

Almost no one does in socket CPU upgrades, and if OP suddenly has enough money to jump up to a 12-16 core spending $150 on a new motherboard probably isn’t a big deal.

Gamers don’t care about power usage, you can tell because they’re gobbling up Ampere GPUs that draw 350-400+ watts of electricity. The CPU pulling an extra 50-100 watts at full load is nothing compared to this.

The i5 11400 having a worse iGPU than the 5600g isn’t a big deal because half of shit is still shit. OP just needs a monitor out until he gets a graphics card anyway.

CPU overclocking is a meme these days on both Intel and AMD CPUs. You get 95% of the maximum performance by just removing power limits and getting a good cooler. That last 5% is so hard to get and increases power usage and cooling requirements so much that it’s not worth it for normal people.

Intel’s Gear 1/2 is no different than AMD’s 1:1 or 1:2 infinity fabric modes, and is probably easier for normal people because it’s just one toggle.

SAM is just what AMD calls PCIE resizable bar, you’ve been able to get it on Intel motherboards and Nvidia GPUs for months now. Just needs a bios update.

The 2600 was cheaper then the 8700k, was there a reason why as well?
