- I am proud to say I saw it. Sorry for dredging this up again. Thought it was cool
-
They used to have that thing plugged in running tetris.
And Congrats on seeing it in person. Honestly, thats one of the odd things i would enjoy as well.
ID: h58va0tID: h5bn942Looks like screen burn-in to me.
ID: h59jdmbShould change the card to "damaged during an epic MRE fart"
ID: h59keyxIt is
ID: h59bxu5Ironic seeing as it was probably damaged with soviet texh olgoy explosives.
ID: h5a2k76It is weird to think though... there were probably human hands holding that thing that got turned into dust
ID: h5apijnThis happened when a barracks were hit during the war. Thankfully, the Gameboy was the only casualty.

Nintendo during the Gameboy era: this baby can take temperatures up to nine thousand degrees!
Nintendo now: you're handling your controller too rough and that's what causes the drift.
-
Pure Nintendium, indestructible!

I've seen this quite a few times at the NYC Nintendo Store, but I was just there last week and I couldn't find it. Did it get moved somewhere?
ID: h5avcs8It occasionally gets loaned out. I'm sure it was on display in Canada at one point, but I can't find a record of it.
-
I could've sworn I saw this or something like it in Bristol museum once lol
-
Where can you visit this? Wow!
ID: h5atpufI saw it at the Nintendo store in NYC a few years ago. Before that i saw it in Nintendo Power when i was a kid. No idea if its still at the Nintendo Store or not.
-
Why are you proud?
-
"Told you it would still turn on"
-
I would love it if Nintendo released an "indestructible model" for each handheld they created
ID: h58xduxIf that happened, we would have memes about using gamecube as replacement to a brick and having an indestructible house.
ID: h59gyj5So pretty much every handheld they released? My GBA SP, released in 2003 is still going strong 18 years later, the hinge of my original DS broke after 10-12 years of very heavy use and my 3DS is a little beat up but still going strong. Don't know about the Switch, since I don't have one
-
My friend told me about this when he visited Nintendo NYC and I was like “…what? That’s a weird shitpost.”
-
“It was found next to a still working Nokia 5110”

7 years too early for that
ID: h59zih3Damn… well I tried.

They don't make em like they used to.
-
If you look really closely you can see the title screen of tetris on it OwO
ID: h59kk8cStill playing it
ID: h58gsek[Tetris music intensifies]
ID: h58jpmosaw that and wondered.. won’t the screen burn out eventually if they keep it on all the time like that?
-
Yeah.... this little tidbit of Nintendo lore was first shown in the pages of Nintendo Power magazine way back when. I don't remember what issue, but it was in the reader's letters section - at least I'm pretty sure.
The original screen was non-functioning, I believe. The only way they confirmed it was working was the sounds it made when they put in a fresh Tetris cart. The sounds corresponded to the button inputs. I guess for the display in the Nintendo store, they decided to put in a new screen to better showcase that it still worked.
Still, an asterisk on the display description stating this would be less misleading. At any rate, this Game Boy's an ode to simpler, and very rugged construction. It'd be a lot harder to replicate this kind of design today with the need for ever thinner and sleeker designs, plus bigger screens. Hell, the Switch has problems just keeping the damn sticks from drifting on its own, lol.

of the GameBoy in the picture was in a camp that came under Iraqi missile fire. I had the NP from back in the day, and every time I see this pic it reminds me of my childhood. The buttons were fused as well as the D-pad. the start and select buttons still sorta worked, as well as the power switch. He found it in the rubble of his camp and powered it on just out of curiosity. The screen was not in great shape, but it powered on. He sent the story into NP, they sent him a new one, and he donated the original. -
Fucking dope that it still works

Should change the card to "damaged during an epic MRE fart"

Aka slightly uses condition on ebay.
-
Just like the pic said, it still works.

The first time I went to New York I wanted to see it, but the store closes too early and I couldn't see it. Seriously, why close your store @8pm on NYC??
Last time I heard the Gulf War GB was removed; was it put on display again?
-

ID: h58w6tjNope. Different attack.
At some point during the war, a Game Boy was stored by a medic named Stephan Scoggins inside barracks in the Middle East during a bombing. Afterwards, Scoggins sent the Game Boy to Nintendo for repair, writing, "Fortunately, this Game Boy, several Game Paks, and sundry other personal items were the only casualties claimed by a fire."
ID: h58wglkTIL, thanks for clearing that up

From the toys r us museum in nyc. I remember it well
ID: h59k9ekIt also spent time in the Henry Ford museum in MI. Which is where I think it calls home.

Just don't leave batteries in them. I got an original Gameboy from a thrift store and I can't get it working the batteries corroded so much they destroyed the main board.

Look closer. It's still running Tetris and plugged in on the side for power.
