- Why Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart's 40fps Fidelity Mode Is A Big Deal For Consoles
-
This game now has a 30fps, 40fps, and 60fps mode. 120fps is next. The more options, the better. Insomniac are so great.
ID: h5w715gID: h5wb3bxThis basically. The moment the PS5 will support VRR all games should detect its active and just unlock their frame-rate. Long gone will be the era of games capped at 30/60Hz.
ID: h5w4xhfI think they can do 1080p 120FPS without RT
ID: h5w62rhThe issue is CPU. You can lower graphics and resolution as much as you want but there's not much you can do about the CPU side. Which is why AFAIK the only games with 120fps modes have been games that already ran at 60fps on PS4.
For rift apart they actually talk about it in the hour long interview they did, there are sections of the game that can hit 120fps but much of the game can't hit it. What would be great is a VRR mode once the PS5 gets VRR support, that uses dynamic res and disables ray-tracing to keep the game between 80 and 100fps. But that mode would only be any good for people with VRR capable TVs.
ID: h5w781sDo we know that? On the DF interview with them a few months ago, they seems... hesitant... as to whether 120hz would be possible. They said that thought some scenes could probably get there.
I think their future titles will definitely get there.

This mode was incredible. Normally I side with fps performance modes but this was the way to play rift apart.
ID: h5x9mabIts the perfect in between. I adored 60fps mode but 30fps was not enjoyable at all.
ID: h5vywzySmooth movie mode is what I call it. Motion blur works best in the 30fps mode, but no one is playing the 40/60fps modes for motion blur.

I can’t imagine many games doing this. Kinda have to have a very specific setup like HDMI 2.1 TV with 120Hz
ID: h5vw7fxMy LG B8 looks fantastic, but no HDMI 2.1 or VRR.
ID: h5w1me2Unless you have HDMI 2.1, you have to drop the resolution down to 1080p to use 120Hz mode so it kinda defeats the purpose of fidelity mode.
ID: h5vz12pI’ve got a B8 too - I have absolutely no inclination to upgrade it, it’s a great TV.
ID: h5wenmzB8 here as well. The picture is so good it almost looks 3D. I recently bought the Hisense U8G and that’s also a great tv that does have 2.1 VRR but I have yet to try it out. Hoping Sony updates VRR support soon but I’m totally happy with current setup.
ID: h5w2ckpTrue, but HDMI 2.1 will basically be everywhere over the next couple of years. Considering a 55" CX OLED goes for like 1100-1200 dollars and the console is 500 it doesn't seem that unlikely that people would pair the console with an awesome screen.
I suspect we will likely see it become more and more common and HDMI 2.1/120hz/4k TVs become more the norm.
ID: h5vwnjpI have an older non HDR that does 120hz but my main theater is a newer 4K HDR but only 60hz. Was pretty bummed when I got my PS5 and realized those tech specs.
ID: h5w2qflI wouldn’t say it’s a /very/ specific setup. It’s just one item and that’s just a higher end tv. There might be a future where 120hz panels make it to mid level TVs 4K and thus the development time could be worth it.
ID: h5w9r70I bought the 65” LG CX OLED to go with my ps5. Can confirm - the 40 FPS mode is super smooth and visually stunning. Upgrading from my old Sony 4K android tv to the new (and blazingly fast) Webos was an added bonus.
ID: h5wr5asits worth it tho, it looks great on my LG CX, I could not handle the 30fps mode, but the 40fps mode is a real nice compromise.
ID: h5wrpogIdk what this sentiment keeps popping up.
It's 2021. Most decent tvs that have 120hz are going to be hdmi 2.1
But ignore today. What tvs people are buying now. Look at 2022. 2023. 2024.
ID: h5w3d5lThat's a very narrow sighted viewpoint. New TVs and many newer monitors are now standard to have HDMI 2.1. It won't be rare for long. There was a time when 16:9 ratio was rare because most TVs were 4:3, same with 4K when most TVs were 1080p.
ID: h5x6i3kYeah it seems like a majority of mid to high budget TVs are 4k HDR w/ HDMI 2.1, 120hz is a bit hard to get though sub $1000
ID: h5wq15yThey could do optional 40fps for those with HDMI 2.1 and 60fps for everyone else.
ID: h5wv1m6I can’t imagine many games doing this.
Keep in mind that the PlayStation 5 still has about five years left before its replacement, which is enough time that many people will have upgraded their televisions.
ID: h5w3b8rYou can do 120hz 1440p with HDMI 2.0 (on XSX), and 120hz 1080p on PS5.
I think this will become more and more common, as more and more TV's are being shipped with 120hz panels. Maybe not a majority of games, but I do think there will be a large number of them.
Really, the future is VRR though.
ID: h5wm5lwThe point is it's pointless unless at 4k in this game. You may aswell run 1440p60FPS.

performance RT still feels better to me, even on my CX
ID: h5w0pkhI mean it's still higher fps after all. But the 40fps mode is great for people who want maximum visuals while still getting as much performance as possible
ID: h5wkyyuI loved the 120Hz 40fps mode. I turned a little motion blur back on and it allllmost felt like 60, but with full-fledged fidelity. The perfect balance in my eyes.
ID: h5wnuccI must be blind as shit because 1080 vs 4k is usually about the same. Some might consider me blessed. Lol
-
I appreciate the option but im sticking with the 60fps rtx mode
-
I saw a review saying this game looks like a Pixar movie, and I didn't quite agree with it, until I changed to Fidelity mode.
60 fps is cool and all, but man, Fidelity mode makes this game look unbelievable! Like, my brain had a hard time accepting that this is a playable video game that I can control, instead of some movie I was watching. Pair that with a good story, great characters, really fun combat with a large array of weapons, and this game is truly a must have....
ID: h5wxwwxI’m confused by this comment. According to Digital Foundry, the only difference between Performance RT and Fidelity is resolution. You’re not losing any other graphical features and if you are sitting 7-9 feet away from your television you will literally never notice the difference between 1440P and 4K. I have both Spider-Man games and cannot see any difference between Fidelity and Performance RT when I’m on my couch (other than frame rate of course).
ID: h5zb9hdI see this argument that one can't tell the difference between 1440p and 4k and am genuinely confused. On my LG CX difference between those two resolutions is night and day, 1440p looks pixelated and blurry. Granted, my room is not huge, but also my TV is 48', the smallest version.
I am wondering if people who can't tell difference are in massive living rooms. How far are you from the TV?

I need this mode in every PS5 game, 40fps, 4k + RT should honestly be the goal from now on (if 60 is off the table.)
ID: h5vz57cI would still rather have 60 fps that 4k in most games
ID: h5w1fo9I think most would, but the ability to have all these options with ‘happy mediums’ is awesome to see.
-
I can't recommend this mode enough. Really feels like it's how the game was meant to be played.
ID: h5wvujnWhy is it better than 60fps?
ID: h5wy2uiI mean the frame rate isn't better, obviously the higher the better in that sense.
It's the fidelity mode itself: the resolution, background/crowd/traffic density, detail in the characters and environment etc.
And then most importantly, the ray-tracing. it's clear that it's an important part of the art style for Rift Apart. There are a ton of shiny, reflective surfaces and neon lights etc, even the rifts themselves.
The improved visuals are worth the fps hit, partly because 40fps at 120hz is much more smooth than 30fps at 60hz, and partly because the visuals and style of fidelity mode are excellent.
If it was another game like Spiderman I'd probably still go for performance RT, bit Rift Apart really shines in fidelity mode.

I love what they did with this game I hope insomniac adds this update to both Spider-Man remastered and miles morales
ID: h5vz231I’ve been waiting day after day for this…no dice yet :l
Please Insomniac??

this is great news! I’m have both pc and ps5, and I really like the overall experience on ps5, and the reasons I play on pc are: 1- I play a lot of FPS and I can’t stand Using a controller 2- graphical settings. If companies will follow isomniac by giving players few combinations of resolution and FPS, it will help a lot since ppl have different preferences and tolerances in games, I can stand playing an action game with 30fps locked if the graphical is a lot better than a 60fps performance mode, and some others may prefer the smooth experience of 60fps.
-
Does the Sony 900h support this setting?
-
I will assume there's a few probable buyers of 4K120 in this thread. Just giving my recommendations on monitors and TVs to look out for.
Monitor: Gigabyte Aorus FV43U (10 Bit QLED, HDMI 2.1 HDR1000)TV: LG CX/C1 (10 Bit OLED, HDMI 2.1 HDR 1000)
Budget TV: TCL 6 Series (10 Bit QLED, HDMI 2.0 - 1080p120fps only, HDR1000)
ID: h5wg8h9Not sure why TCL chose not to update the series 6 this year. I would have bought it if they included 2.1. That's the only problem with that tv. It made sense in 2020, but it's a dumb decision for this year.
ID: h5xh337Lg having HDMI 2.1 since 2019..
ID: h5wxu9vNo oled produces 1000 nits.
-
This my favorite mode. No graphical compromise and stable 40 fps is just enough to feel very fluid. Sure it feels jumpy for the first 30 seconds when coming directly from 60 fps but it feels great when your brain adjust.
-
Why do I feel like VRR would make it less of a big deal
引用元:https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/comments/oo41ab/why_ratchet_and_clank_rift_aparts_40fps_fidelity/
VRR mode is probably next with an unlocked frame rate that will likely live in the 40-50 range.
Edit: WTF autocorrect?
