Just got my beta invite yesterday, the SN850 is indistinguishable to me. Except I had a Returnal run crash once off of the M2, and a few instances of my headphones cutting out. It;s amazing how fast those little drives are!

Slow Gen4 drives provide the same, or better, performance than the internal PS5 SSD in load times and gameplay, even in R&C, which is a next gen exclusive.

Didn't the Verge say their 3.9 GB/s drive worked fine? If that's the case then that means the internal SSD isn't as fast as it is on paper.

The small one does, the larger one also just don't put the dumb plastic cover on. Why enclose it like that?

Thicker heatsinks can fit if you are okay with not putting the ssd slot cover back on.

A 980 Pro isn't 'any normal SSD'. It's a premium, high end drive.
But yes, there was absolutely rampant amounts of hyperbole and ignorance about the SSD on this sub.

Remember when people on this sub claimed the PS5 SSD can function as RAM? And the XSX GPU will sit idle because the SSD won't be fast enough to feed it data? Or the UE Demo couldn't run on any system just the PS5 cause of the SSD? (Then ran on a 7200RPM SATA PC drive?)

I guess it might have been a big deal in early 2020 when they were developing it but SSD industry moves much faster than a console maker. Or it was just pure hype.
What I'm actually interested in DirectStorage being properly used on PC games.

There's so many ways you can go wrong if you're not a tech nerd. Hopefully they do a proprietary one or manufacturers make it clear they are suitable for PS5.

That’s not really the issue lmao. The key to a console is that it’s a single architecture strategy. Sony exclusives will be built to utilize the I/O bandwidth and PC games will not for some time. PCs make cross gen look like a picnic.

I wonder why Demon's Souls is never tested even though it's the only true current gen title to me. Ratchet and Clank is a good test 'cause the biggest reason for it being current gen is the SSD is required.

Isn’t that what makes it a true current gen game? Also the insane amount of high fidelity detail throughout along with the ray tracing. I mean both Demon’s souls and Ratchet are current gen games imo, but Ratchet is definitely doing a lot more technically and visually

Dont go confusing 'next gen' with gimmicky features. Rift Apart would still be a next gen game without the 'warping' stuff, too. The point of the SSD's in the new consoles were not just for instant loading.

Got the beta on Monday installed the 1TB WD 850 ($200) with a 3rd party heat-sink ($10) and works great with great speeds!

So for a 980 Pro 1TB with heatsink before sales tax comes to around $219….I’ll wait a little.

I heard that there was a firmware update to Samsung 980 Pro recently to solve some issues. I don't have a pc or laptop to connect it and update the firmware. Would that be a problem when using it with ps5? Like, would it hurt the performance?

It impacted sustained write speeds so I wouldn't really worry about it too much. 95% of the time you're going to be playing games which won't be an impacted workload

Are there any heatsink recommendations for the Samsung 980 PRO? This isn’t my forte, so would appreciate any advice.

I just installed a 2tb AORUS Gen 4 7000s. Works beautifully with close to 7gb read/write speed (I believe the PS5 officially clocked it at 6.87). Nice and snappy with built in heatsink. Highly recommend.

Anyone got info on speeds relating to transferring stored ps5 games from external hdd to m.2 ssd expansion?

The PS5 is built in a way that it has almost zero bottle necks. The custom I/O and decompression hardware make even slow speed SSDs act fast right now. I would assume in the future based on how much a game needed to stream data, slower than recommend drives may cause issues in the future.
