- IGN-Welcome to Raccoon City Director on Casting, Creatures and Capcom
-
It's daft to me how the only option was to hire a rubbish director that knows the games. Why not get the word out to top directors and first see if they're interested, then sit down with them and make sure you're on the same page, the way Kevin Feige does with the Marvel films. If you can't find someone, don't make the movie. I'm sure every fan would prefer no movie than a rubbish one.
It's like hiring Uwe Boll to do Iron Man because he loves Iron Man.
-
He seems to be very proud of making the creatures and locations as accurate in appearance to the games as possible.
I'm genuinely confused about why that mentality doesn't apply to the characters' outfits as well. And I'm not even angry about it. Just confused.
Seems like if you're trying to replicate the aesthetics of the games as much as possible, stuff like that would fall in the same category as the RPD or the zombie head turn.
ID: hb3n0yeID: hb7q055It’s funny that such a level headed take is downvoted. The only thing that really matters is the quality of the story. It’s the entire fucking point of the movie. If we want to go look at what the game characters look like, we can go play the games.
I’m for complete accuracy if the best actor looks that way, but it should be toward the bottom of the quality checklist. Too bad a lot of people are too butthurt to think about that for 5 seconds.

Claire grew up in an orphanage?
ID: hb52ch3Didn’t Chris and Claire’s parents died to a car crash or something?
ID: hb5jmrhThey died. Not sure if it was a car crash though.
-
Why does Leon look like Carlos?
-
This guy can spew all the PR he was trained to repeat all he wants, I'm expecting this to suck. There's no world where you squeeze the first 2 games into one 2 hour movie and it turns out good.
-
that Leon looks so out of place XD
-
This guy seems really passionate about this, but looking through his imdb page… yikes. Most of his movies weren’t well received at all. Maybe this one will be the exception though.
ID: hayg444The good things I am seeing are: he really wants to keep this story centered around the games and not whatever the hell the Anderson ones devolved in to just to showcase his wife.
His atmosphere is influenced by some great 70s horror and suspense movies. I LOVE the original Assault On Precinct 13, the Thing, and Exorcist. I didn't care for "Dont Look Now" but some people really love it and I think these influences at least lets us know the director wants his movie to be more a classic horro
film.
The kurt russell characters influence on Leon are very on brand as well. Snappy one liners and some false bravado mixed in with "I really dont have time to fuck around" for Leon are the right vibe, I feel. Reading this interview gives me a bit of hope and I really want this to be at least halfway decent.
ID: hb3r7auhe really wants to keep this story centered around the games and not whatever the hell the Anderson ones devolved in to just to showcase his wife.
thing is, we see this line thrown out in marketing for so many adaptations, yet so many times it never shows in the final product :/
sure he can go on about wanting to center the story around the games, but that doesn't meant anything if the writing is going to be bad. And we already have some warning signs to bad writing from the movie's title itself to things like lisa's "personal connection" to trying to fit RE 1 and 2 in a single movie... and so on
ID: hb5pg02he really wants to keep this story centered around the games
If that is true, where is Rebecca?
Somehow people adapding stuff always say how they value source material, and then it appears that they don't even understand what made it good (and re3 remake is a great example of that). They make random changes with no clear purpose but to be "different" because they don't have a good vision of the project. I really hope this is not another case of that happening. Lazy casting with most actors not even trying to look like og characters is a first sign of it.
-
I’m a big fan of Avan and I think he can pull off Leon’s personality…but he looks nothing like Leon. Leon’s design is so iconic and he doesn’t look anything like him
-
He did a great with Chris. He didn't include Barry or Rebecca that's a no for me
ID: hay2tbzJoseph Frost too.
ID: hay2ydzJo-SEPH!
ID: hb3n5ymLol how do you know?
ID: hb5x6x4SMH! no love for Forest?!
ID: hb7r4u8It’s a movie with a run time. They get 2ish hours to tell a story. Do you want Barry and all the general nothing he actually adds to the story, or would you rather have Yawn? Because if Richard is in the movie over Barry, surely that means Yawn, which is infinitely more interesting than a Jill sandwich.
ID: hb7ujsnBarry is my fav character i take ofensive to your nothing comment
-
Claire apparently grew up in an orphanage with Lisa Trevor. Who came up with this horseshit? The REmake story is super tragic and perfect as is! Her dad and mom are pivotal. Why link her to Claire??? This means Lisa will never say "Motherrrrr" in the film.
ID: hb6fdefClaire apparently grew up in an orphanage with Lisa Trevor.
Bahahaha. Is that true? I haven't followed this movie too much as I always thought it would be trash. The casting was a clear red flag. Then the low budget outfits and monster in the screenshots. And now that new info is one more nail in the coffin for sure.
-
this guy cant even give wesker glasses and jill a beret. i can only imagine what else he was like NAH we dont need that 😛
ID: hb16e2oat least Wesker is not bald african american with 2 daughters XD
ID: hb6fkpsShh. He wants to stay faithful to the 'iconic' games! Everyone knows there's nothing iconic about some dumb shades (who would even wear them at night, sooooo unrealistic) and a stupid beret!
/s
-
Was hoping McG would direct it. /s
-
I swear if this movies shit like the other ones I’m gonna break something
-
Movie is prob gonna be butt
-
I wish they would have had Kaya straighten her hair and tie it up.
-
Man I really don't care if the actors don't look like carbon copies of the characters as long as they can sell the part. Just give me a fun movie and I won't care.
I noticed that the more time passes, the less I care about meaningless things such as this. No hate for those who care though, everyone has the right to express their opinions and I completely respect them.
ID: hazxstgAgree! I like Jill’s actor and Leon’s, but i dunno about that goatee. It needs to go! Just reminds me of my teenage years trying and failing to grow facial hair. Makes Leon look 16
ID: hb158mvDaniela Melchior would be a better Jill Valentine.

"It was hugely important with the whole casting process to find people who embodied the spirit and energy of the characters I wanted to portray," Roberts told IGN. "I think often in game adaptations one of the big flaws can be just casting someone to look visually like the characters - giving them the identical haircut and clothes but not really trying to give the audience the thing that a movie does better than a game - which is to create a three-dimensional character that you can really connect with and believe in. I think as I said before one of the traps of falling into game adaptations is to make it feel like a giant cosplay version of the game."
So he thinks the looks of characters aren't important in a visual medium. Or he thinks it's not as important as 'embodying the spirit of the character'. Can't say I agree with him. I think both are incredibly important and one shouldn't be sacrificed in favor of the other. I also disagree with him that movies are better at creating three dimensional characters (the irony, lol), which is an archaic idea at this point. I doubt he's ever played a game in his life.
"Our cast is obviously much more diverse than the original games but I wanted to resist the trap of just casting because someone just happened to look like their character identically," he continued. "We actually had a lot of actors who came in and recreated themselves perfectly visually as the character they were reading - it was uncanny at times ha! - but it was not what I felt this story needed."
So he had the perfect candidates but he rejected them because that's not what he felt 'the story needed'. Solid approach.
-
I really, really hope he achieved the things he says he did with this movie. I'm so excited. Seeing Lisa Trevor really got me excited. Like, holy shit. I never thought we'd see her in a movie.
-
Well that looks like dog shit. The Leon and Claire doesn’t even look like cosplay level of good. And why do they have rifles in the mansion? Atleast Lisa looks ok?
ID: hb1696qye
it looks like low budged cosplay
Jill not having beret and huge shoulder pads is BIG letdown XD
i still hope this movie will be better than Pauls W.S Anderson movies
at least there is no random supergirl as movie protagonist
-
Why is carlos standing next to claire in the set photo?
ID: hay2y2eThat's Leon
ID: hayf4m3fuk that Leon dsnt look like Leon at all
even those shit movies with Alice superman had better Leon
-
What the fuck kind of adaptation doesn’t make the characters that everyone loves at least somewhat recognizable? This dude sounds so pretentious. How disappointing.
ID: hb6g07vThis dude sounds so pretentious.
This. He also sounds like a liar. He can't talk the way he does if he's actually played the games and cares about them. He hasn't played them.
-
"I wanted scares and atmosphere rather than full-on action. I think fans of the game felt the same - they wanted to see the iconic characters and locations and feel that the movie was more in line with the Resident Evil game world so that’s really why we chose to go in that direction."
He says that and then he goes on to cast people that look nothing like the iconic characters from the games and argues that looks don't matter too much. Mhm.
-
I love that in every answer, he is taking direct shots at Paul & Milla for making the prior movies less Resident Evil and more Showcase my wife franchise.
ID: hb4ri0nI don't like that, he sounds pretentious. As bad as those movies might be, there's no need for that. He needs to worry about his damn movie, because his film history is not good and the pictures that came out so far of this one have not been that good either.
-
I’m pretty excited. May not be the best VG to movie ever but I really liked what he had to say. He seems genuinely like a fan and that’s what the movie needs.
ID: hazkc7aAs someone who loves the Alien and Predator franchises, the directors of AVP Requiem were supposedly big fans. Had some neat stuff too (predator home world, call backs to original films), but my god… that was movie was god awful. Now, not saying this movie will be that bad (not holding my breath at this point), but in the case of directors… maybe choosing someone with a little more experience and understands what it takes to make a great movie is needed more than someone who is a huge fan.
ID: hazkmzrI agree. His filmography isn’t very promising. Of course I hope this is like the one where he just blows the rest of his movies out of the water but I don’t expect that all. I’m going in with perfectly room temperature expectations.
ID: hazuywzAvP movies would have been miles better if they was set in the future, Colonial Marines time. Present day is shitty.
-
I'm just glad that it looks better than the OTHER movies.
-
why not cast Julia Voth as Jill XD
-
It's a netflix production, enough said.
Its looking like death note levels of awful.
-
No its not. This is completely separate from what Netflix is doing.
-
no matter how bad it will be
i will still watch it and hope there will be another movie in RE universe
-
Very excited for the movie, glad they changed up some of the characters to make the movie feel like it’s own thing instead of a movie version of the game
-
This all sounds great. I just hope they can deliver.
-
I might get downvoted for this but I don’t really worry about the cast. I worry more abt the story honestly
EDIT: knew I was getting downvoted
-
I’m pretty okay with Leon. I feel the vibe. But if I was an outsider and you told me that that’s Jill, I wouldn’t believe you. But no hate to the actress at all, I just wish they made her a little more recognizable for such an iconic character. I’m placing my bets that the acting will be great, though!
-
This is how I feel on Leon. No offense to the actor, but Leon is visually and characteristically iconic, to me.
You say 'Leon is in this picture,' I'm asking where. It's just not him, to me.
-
Same. I'm sure they're good actors and that takes precedence, but that doesn't mean they can't attempt to look like the characters too.
It feels like they didn't even try for Leon and Jill. Leon's outfit is fine, but they could at least give him the Leon hair, which imo, is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Leon's appearance.
And Jill's outfit looks nothing like her RE1 outfit. If they thought the shoulder pads but no vest look was stupid, they could've at least kept the beret and same colored t shirt.
-
Damn, I liked this interview. He seems to have the right ideas. The problem is the execution of these ideas, the characterization was very weak (except for Lisa who is spectacular) and the actors are pretty bad.
And this director's filmography is composed of very mediocre films. I hope he hits the nail on this one. -
Depressing how much this thread is trying to shit on what is likely to be the best movie adaptation of a RE game we've ever gotten. We're finally getting the games' story brought to the big screen, both the mansion and the Raccoon City outbreak, but Leon and Jill aren't white so aggressive downvote of anything positive.
As for not being able to fit both those stories into one movie, I honestly think they could fully cover RE3 in here too and it would be fine. They're not cutting deep character development to fit things in here, they're cutting 1,000 door opening animations and a dozen game over screens. The story encompassing these two or three games would give it a pretty satisfying three acts.
This is why we can't have nice things. Anxiously awaiting the trailer for this.

I mean their outfits aren't terribly inaccurate. Leon's, Chris', and Wesker's are basically the same (Leon's is identical) I could give two shits less about hai
