- Audio Experiment: Sometimes, audio is ALL or NOTHING (My friend is running in-place above me)
-
Thanks for confirming that stairs in Resort are bugged, I had some really weird stuff happening there
ID: guhh24oID: guho95cfeels like all stairs, i would agree with you, even metal stairs
ID: guhx8q7The stairs that lead into the rat tunnels in that little building next to Tech Dorm did this to me and got me killed because of it. Killed 3 people, heard nothing, thought I was safe. Ifak comes out and there was a dude in full sprint running to come kill me but the flight of stairs between us meant I heard nothing until it was too late..
ID: gui0yh8More or less the whole game is bugged that way.
ID: guhz3nx*Vertical Audio in Tarkov
ID: guhumioNot only in Resort. Underground stairs on reserve bugged too
ID: guij0n4Can we stop saying bugged and start saying haunted
ID: gujdlovMore like broken
ID: gui4iruI dont think there was any doubt or denial about sound on stairs being buggy, feels like fixing it isnt an easy thing for them.
-
Staircase audio is fucking broken, not just in Resort but also dorms. This makes PVP in resort so annoying because you can't fully rely on sound even if you SHOULD be hearing it.
ID: guhtlhlCottages too
ID: guhukfqAlso at the power station on Interchange. Once you go up to the catwalk, you can't hear hardly anything, and you are very muffled to them as well. I had a guy run in right underneath me that my friend called out, but I never heard him even as I watched him run in
ID: guijoyuit's not specifically the stairs. It's vertical audio, a ramp, escalator or inclined hill would all give you the same effect. The engine just doesn't give you the sound until you get close enough to it in the vertical plane.
ID: guhujrfhappened to me on reserve too in Black Knight stair well,
ID: guhw9ohBasically any staircase in the game...
ID: guilv1aIt's not just staircases. The audio in this game in general is so hacked together in terms of zoning. There are hard cutoffs like this you can find all over the place and it's not always just vertical audio, though it usually is. I play mainly customs and know of a few spots that have these - some of which can be used to your advantage.
-
Conclusion after various experiments:
The sound profile you hear is ultimately dependent on the objects (walls, floors, props, etc.) between you and the source. It's not as simple as being on a certain vertical level.
ID: guhbzrkBut there are defenetly a vertical levels and they adjust them manually. This is why sometimes audio is entierly cut off. there are places where you can jump on some boxes and stick your head to the upper vertical sound layer and be able to hear people clearly through the floor, or lay down and get you hed to the lower layer. Stairs is a complite mess because you transition between levels very smoothly and they never bothered fixing that. Objects doesnt matter that much. Try this experiment on the Dome in the Reserve. When you up in the spere you can literally look through the gaps at another player and see him sprinting right under you on that ledge, but with no sound at all. there is no object between you and him, only different vertical sound layers.
ID: guhct9jAhh good to know. I said that because you can produce the 'muffled' sound profile by simply standing on opposite sides of, for example, a box.
The issue being that the 'muffled' sound effect is the same whether you're on the same level with an object between you and the source or on different levels.
EDIT: Also, I wouldn't say that being able to see a player (LoS) affects sound profile. My friend and I actually tested that too.
ID: guhv194LOL! I was up in the dome doing SBIH back in the day. I always went straight up so I don't lose any opportunities right at the beginning and everytime I went down after 5 minutes or so all the doors was opened and the whole place looted without me never hearing a thing. How the fuck is that possible. They probably didn't hear me being there either.
ID: gui7q7yIt seems there are vertical levels to the filing cabinets too. If you crouch then the upper ones are muffled as though they're on the floor above. The one in line with your head sounds as it should.

People say browsing reddit ruins EFT but these types of videos are so important.
Yeah it sucks to know audio is like this, but the fact of the matter is there are no new shooters out rn for me and if I'm gonna play Tarkov, I wanna be able to know what's good and bad so I can play effectively.
Even if this is a problem, its good to know it's here so I can exploit it and be even more cautious moving up and down the stairs. It's less frustrating if I know it can happen.
ID: gui84amLol, that's honestly half of getting good at Tarkov - knowing and understanding what aspects of the game are broken, and abusing them. One of the most popular metas in this game is a meta based entirely around server desync instead of anything actually game related!
ID: guiadvxSound on mute, KS-23, aim at the dick.
Millionaire in no time.
ID: guj9obcIf reading about bugs is enough to ruin EFT for people, wait till they are experiencing networking and gameplay bugs, lol
ID: guixgvyPeople say browsing reddit ruins EFT
what the heck could the argument behind that possibly be?

Does anyone else notice that when you stop to listen and things are very quiet you can hear footsteps faintly on your right side? I notice this on every map/raid so I know there’s no one actually there. Shits trippy
ID: guhzxuzIts ghost steps the Devs said its related with Scavs spawning so every time you hear a random step and you sure you alone you cann assume a scav spawned somewhere. I tested this on offline and put it to horde and every few seconds was hearing a step. XD
ID: gui2ibiI think that’s the one loud step to your right that happens randomly the sounds I’m hearing are a little different, regardless the audio is pretty fucky lol
-
What tarkov audio off next you will be telling me the lighting has issues
-
I've observed similar in dorms on customs. Being on a couch on 1st floor you hear 2nd floor like it's the 1st. Sounds completely cut out between floors sometimes too.
Sound is somehow simultaneously the best and worst it's ever been. They better have sound perfect by the time Streets comes out because it's supposed to be shitloads of indoor.
ID: guihzuxYeah, Streets looks like it's all walls and verticality, that'd be a nightmare with the current state of sound
ID: guj2k08Yeah outside and single floor building have been great. Multiple floors not so much
-
Noticed this on all the most trafficked stairsets in the game (except Labs since I don't play Labs). Dorms stairs, Resort stairs, Stronghold stairs, Crackhouse stairs (that whole building is FUCKED for audio never trust audio there, just W and shoot lol) and so on..
This is a huge reason why I cannot wait for proper Steam Audio with all the good stuff. No more "inside/outside" triggers etc. No more worlds loudest bushes. No more footsteps from a floor below you in a concrete building. A lot more hearing deafening reverbations from full-auto gunfire inside buildings. Window integrity and door states affecting sound. A lot more tactical approaches instead of sprinting to listen for noise and continuing sprinting and so on... It's gonna completely change the game.
HRTF is nice too but not at all what I most want from the audio updates. Let's hope they can get their performance issues nailed down with the implementation.
ID: guhxu4li hate inside/outside triggers 🙁 standing in a doorway - sounds like inside, move 1 inch further, you are no longer allowed to hear inside this building.

Known bug for years, never have been addressed by the devs.
-
i always notice just how bad audio can be when im duo q with my friend, we stream to eachother on discord so were always aware of our positions (hes tkd me alot) and ill notice him running down the same hall above me or next to me and hear nothing its crazy
-
I noticed a similar thing with the Kiba alarm. You won't hear a thing until you are within a certain vicinity of Kiba and then it becomes super loud.
It would obviously be a lot better if it gradually became louder.
Edit: just tested in offline for the fun of it. It actually does become gradually louder the closer you get, but if you step one step outside the vicinity it is abrupt no sound at all - it should just fade all the way imo
-
Yea most stairs do this its really retarded
-
Stairs being bugged like this is well known is it not?
-
All stairs are broken like this - and it has been since at least last wipe.
My teammate and I noticed this last wipe on Reserve in one of the Knight buildings. When on the top floor, he was going down to the next floor. As soon as he passed the landing to the next floor his audio was entirely gone. We recreated it over and over and over again.
I submitted a bug report about it and we made mental notes to keep that in mind.
A few days later, we were killed by the exact bug - in the exact spot. A team was upstairs and they heard us walking around. They came down the stairs and we never heard them. One was on Twitch and said "I don't know how they didn't hear us".
I went in and said GG, explained the bug and they recreated it themselves.

Man thats fcked up
-
Just a 3 year old occlusion bug. Nothing to hear here.
-
This game has an unrealistic focus on audio and since forever they have massive issues with audio. Maybe, there's room for change here?
-
This is why I never play Shoreline.
ID: guhseymThis, also why I avoid dorms like the plague.
ID: guhw1tnDorms is pretty easy since its so small. Resort is way too big to not to hear shit. Had lots of audio related deaths there. Also people have gone missing way too many times. It always ends up like you have to clear every fucking room incase of a camper and the guy probably haven't been there for a long time.
-
It's to do with how sound is blocked vertically but there's a barrier on staircases not just resort. It'll block the audio which is why you don't play on stairs. You'll get shot in the back
-
Reminds me of Ace Ventura screaming on the balcony sliding the door back and forth.
