- US NPD HW - PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform of September in both units and dollars. PlayStation 5 is the best-selling hardware platform of 2021 year-to-date in dollars
-
This also means that Sony broke Nintendo Switch's 33 consecutive month in the US in terms of hardware sales.
Edit month
ID: hh3v6ozID: hh3zbktMaybe. I would love to see how much a PS5 would sell in a non mass shortage world. But, there's no denying the switch is pulling crazy numbers, reminiscent of its predecessor, the Wii
ID: hh4jiu1No it wouldn’t lmao can’t beat 33 months without getting to 33 months first
ID: hh4uoaiStrangely happens to coincide with a hardware refresh from the Switch, I can’t think why the sales slowed for Nintendo, normal business will resume this month.
ID: hh5i3ilThe hardware refresh probably had a bit to do with it. Lots more used Switches being sold for OLED, people waiting for OLED, no major releases plus the usual lull of it being before bit holiday season. It makes sense the Switch dipped in September for PS5 to swoop in
ID: hh4yh5uEven Switch can't demand either, just looks like Nintendo dominates the console space now

Imagine if you could just go out an buy one..
ID: hh4rk3tYou couldn't buy a Wii for three years. This isn't a new thing. Hell we have it easier than those guys did, with the whole "online shopping being the preferred way to shop" thing.
ID: hh8l7z0Definitely wasn't this bad for the Wii here.
Friend and I walked into an EB Games about a month after launch and both got one.
ID: hh7mm0iThe Wii was no where near as sold out as ps5 is.
The Wii was only hard to get around holidays.
Ps5 has been sold out for almost an entire year now
ID: hh9qobjUh I walked into a store probably 3 months after release and grabbed a Wii no problem. I know my parents bought one the week of release too. The fuck are you talking about?
ID: hh4l902If you actually try you can..
ID: hh4m0mj“If you actually get lucky you can.”
-
We won. Take that Soulja Boy!
-
Finally got me one last month. Loved astrobot and ratchet is really awesome, seems short though. I also I know it gets a bad rep but really liking next gen 2k. Excited to borrow returnal from my brother and pick up kena, deathloop , and of course demon souls.
ID: hh4804kReturnal is a great gaming experience, enjoy!
ID: hh3tcs4Enjoy mate! Try to pick up demons souls as well, it's fantastic!
And returnal is gonna be great! Its a very "next gen" package with the haptics, the audio, (to a certain extent) the visuals, and the great gameplay!
ID: hh4vr3rReturnal is PS5 defining. Most enjoyable platinum I’ve gotten so far in terms of constant replay value. GOTY.
ID: hh4zleiI keep waiting to see if theyll implement a quick save. The game looks so fun but I can only play in 20-30 minute increments tops with my kid and work. Maybe one day.
-
That's great. Success means more games etc.
But as far as the "We're number 1" part of this - I don't care.
Edit: I hate fanboyism. I want all the consoles to do well. That is my point.
ID: hh3x6lgMore sales > more investment > more games?
ID: hh5xig1Of course, but theres no "less sales" alternative here. We're less than 1 year into a new console cycle with constrained supply. They're going to be able to sell as many as they can make for the next 2 years at least.
ID: hh447ptIdc about them beating Nintendo but watching Microsoft’s “we bought your favorite developer because we suck at managing our own” Xbox division continue to falter despite out spending all the competition is pleasant. Consolidation doesn’t work unless consumers let it.
ID: hh4y9uiI'm not sure how you can say Xbox is continuing to falter when they just had a record year too.
ID: hh4qrcfJust like Nintendo's or Sony's exclusives? They buy up studios all the time.
Where's your problem with that?
I'm not an Xbox or Nintendo guy - but the gaming community thrives when there are more studios and consoles from which to choose. If it was just Sony, we'd be paying 120.00 a game.
Competition is good.
ID: hh4pj5iXbox is still beating their previous gen, and that’s without any games from them so far. Gamepass is still exploding in growth. They are more than fine, a company like Amazon would kill to have Microsoft’s position in cloud computing and gaming
ID: hh3ssjbPerfect reaction imo
ID: hh3zixjsuccess and competitive success against competitors who target the same market are one and the same.
ID: hh42dqlNo. Success is selling X amount of something that meets your targets - regardless of how much your competitors sell.
-
The PS5 was already leading in dollars with the Switch in first place. Really makes me wonder how high that dollar mark is with the PS5 in first place. This is also pretty nuts considering the PS5 doesn't sell at a loss.
-
I'd love to add to that number but im not paying a scalper or treating getting one like a full-time job.
ID: hh4eg5rSame. In case you don't know, Sony is taking registrations for US customers here
Hoping I get lucky in November
ID: hh5poxoit can be fun, like going to a casino and trying to refresh the page at just the right time miller lite reminds you to shop responsibly
-
Great news, it means more and more people are jumping to next gen. Now stop developing games for PS4 when PS5 has been out for almost a year.
ID: hh400uzStill hardly any games on it. Bulk of the money is still on PS4. Is like this every gen transition.

Seems like the chip shortage is coming to an end then?
ID: hh421u4The shortage is still a thing, and will be for a while. But Sony has been able to get more chips, so their FY2021 production will be double that of FY2020 (14ish million vs. 7.5). That will, he said stating the obivous, mean more sales.
And with Switch in the pre-OLED lull, PS5 finally hit top spot.
ID: hh3uiirNah, imagine Switch will retake October since most were probably not buying as the OLED was coming out this month.
AMD doesn't expect chip shortages to be better until next Fall
ID: hh3ychxNot exactly, it's just that demand naturally decrases as more people buy the console->easier access to new stock.
The chip shortage is still pretty bad, and there are no signs of a significant improvement this year, or even the first half of 2022.

Shocker
-
That's impressive considering Nintendo has been wining each month in terms of units sold due to the shortages in supply.

My last console was the xbox one, but now I pulled the trigger and bought a ps5. I checked every comparison video/article and don’t understand how can’t everyone see that overall the ps5 is the superior console. Hell, I’ve even seen people who think that the series x’ design is better looking than the ps5’s. Like I understand looks is subjective, but I don’t see that people would put that console in their room instead of the ps5. Don’t even know what I wanna say with this, but I’m really happy that I have the ps and can’t wait to play God of War.
ID: hh40a9mI mean, for me it’s GamePass and the huge WRPG studios they now own. Starfield is my most anticipated game and I use GamePass all the time.
Granted I also have a PS5, but I can definitely see why someone would prefer Xbox. There really isn’t an objectively better console this generation.
ID: hh4847lB-but I need confirmation that my plastic box is better than yours, stop being rational and unbiased >:'(
ID: hh423bqIf you put them side by side, the Series X it's the better console.
I had all Playstation consoles besides the 5. PSP and Vita included.
I realized I don't really care about Playstation exclusives, the last one that I really enjoyed was GOT, so the Xbox made a ton of sense for me, financially wise.
Gamepass is really crazy. I've really played a lot of games this year, some of them I really enjoyed them and I wouldn't even considered playing them if I had to pay. And with all the games that will come day and date it's too good to pass on the value.
I play a lot of Fifa, and fell in love with Forza Horizon, I've played 90 hours of FH4 in less than half a year.
It all comes down to the games you like, if the Playstation exclusives, which are mostly 3rd person story driven games are not you're thing, Xbox is the platform to buy, if the exclusives are a must than its the PS5 100%, some people only play single player story games, they need a PS5.
As for the design, I like the PS5 but it's a little on the bigger size. The Series X looks amazing, especially if you're on a desk setup like me, fits perfectly well with monitor and speakers on a desk.
ID: hh4gs5mWho asked?
-
Does anyone know unit sales for the first 12 months of each version of the Playstation? I would be interested to see how the PS5 is doing considering the supply issues.
-
Best I can give you quickly is a roughly 10.5 month figure:
PS1: NA PS2: 14.95m PS3: 5.63m PS4: 13.5mWe won't know PS5's total for the same time frame until their next quarterly update, but it was 10.1 million as of June 30. I'd expect it will be announced as that same 13-14 million range as PS4 hit.
-
I finally got one last month. I am hoping others are finally getting an opportunity to purchase. I was able to get one during a Sony Direct clusterfuck.
Unfortunately my home sound system crapped out on me so I invested in a good set of headphones instead of the games I’m interested in (returnal, demons souls, death loop). But I bet at least one of those goes on the Black Friday sale here in a few weeks so I’ll get myself some gaming goodness. Until then I’ve been enjoying Subnautica (was unplayable on my old ps4), hell let loose, Astros playroom and God of War.
-
Can't wait for Sony to give me some of those funds.... wait a minute, why do I care about this?
-
I really like to see where the ales are coming from. NONE of my local places even have a PS5 to sell. Best Buy, Target, you name it... ...Where are they coming from???
-
They're coming from all those places... They're not in stock because people keep buying them lol
-
Online sales most stores are having issues with getting their products in due to the issues at the ports and truck driver shortage
So easier just to sell them online
-
In Canada at least, Walmart, Best Buy, even EB Games are basically announcing online sales drops weekly or better now.
Shoppers and Walmart (rarely) sometimes even get them in store long enough to appear on a shelf.
-
You don't see then because people immediatly buy them. Mostly online though.
-
Ok
-
Congrats to the bots and scalpers I guess. I'll get one when the major vendors no longer pseudo-permanently have it flagged as "sold out". At this rate, when a PS5 Pro comes out.
-
You can literally register to buy one direct from Sony. Quit crying and put the work in.
-
I did and I’m waiting. It’s a product, there shouldn’t be “work” to put in. This was not a thing in previous consoles. Vendors could do more to allow preorders, like Apple does. I give money, they say when I get it. The end.
-
Aren't the sales like 80% scalpers though??? I feel like that makes it much less impressive
-
No, but that's what reddit would have you believe.
-
No consumer good has ever been 80% scrap. That just sounds ridiculous
-
Try 8% and that's probably still too high
-
I'm glad it's not so big ~^ seems like it's still really rough to grab one
-
It's crazy what happens when scalping is extremely profitable, the switch now the ps5
-
Scalpers make up like 10% or less of the sales though.
-
you say that like it's not an amazingly large portion of sales
-
Where is that stat from? From the people who i know where I live they had scalpers take up around 75% of sales
-
im still waiting for a game i actually want before buying a ps5. indie scene is so fire rn
-
Easily
-
What is a „Hardware plattform“
Is the oculus quest 2 considered a „hardware plattform“? Or the iPhone?
-
is this in video game or any tech hardware? i really expected like an apple phone or something
-
If only they would let me buy one. 🙁

Probably could’ve beat it sooner if they had gotten their production up
