Sony knew what they were doing. Hardware accelerated on-the-fly decompression that can handle tens of GB and 3D audio are legitimate game changers. The industry really needs to start embracing compression.

We're looking at you cod:mw

We're looking at you cod:mw

ID: hhxjpgd

The problem with MW is that many of the assets are repeated multiple times so HDDs don't take a long time to load. Once Cod phases out old platforms I'm sure we won't see Cod games go as big.

I embrace middle out compression.

Always blue! Always blue! Always blue!

Tip to tip!

ID: hhxdkno

To avoid being thrice a cuckold, always use middle out compression.

ID: hhx1mr1

Ah, a man of culture I see.

ID: hhxy9cp

With tip to tip efficiency there is really no other option.

ID: hhx7gtj

I hear Pied Piper is really good. They should look into using it.

ID: hhwqsbz

Don't forget deduplication, which is a big part of this as well.

ID: hhwv22q

Also don't forget deduplication, which is a big part of this as well.

Any idea about the series x or is it the same as PC? Think I recall them having good compression tech too. Just curious

ID: hhxbboc

They have a similar hardware decompression setup (different software solution) but all evidence points to it not being used for Smart Delivery games, which GotG is. It's 42.5GB on Series X right now. 60 on Xbox One.

Incidentally the same software solution is being rolled out on Windows 10 and 11 right now so newer PCs may be able to enjoy a similar reduction in file size one day soon.

RAD Game Tools working their magic!

4 : Anonymous2021/10/24 15:25 ID: hhvcg2p

Don't forget PS5 has Hardware Accelerated Kraken compression/decompression that massively reduces the size of games by up to 60%

ID: hhvdaqb

They need to do this with warzone XD

ID: hhvl7zm

Likely they will when the native version launches

ID: hhvxs22

Let’s see how big GTA is lol

ID: hhx4u42

It’s not just the compression that saves space in some cases. For Spider-Man they said they had to duplicate many assets so that they would be nearby on the hard drive to load quickly. On an SSD they don’t need to do stuff like that.

Hopefully every square game is 60 gb or less on ps5 especially looking at FF7r which is 100

ID: hhvha3o

The ps5 version is more than the ps4 game for ff7r I think

Edit: I was wrong, ps4 version is 91gb, ps5 is 84gb

ID: hhwgahw

does the ps5 size include the yuffie dlc as well?

6 : Anonymous2021/10/24 20:04 ID: hhwhpo4

I hope the game is good, I'm in the mood to play a good Marvel game.

7 : Anonymous2021/10/24 16:20 ID: hhvk6le

Damn, my PC's 1tb m.2 is gonna fill quick...

8 : Anonymous2021/10/24 14:53 ID: hhv8dzp

PC might be due tue various versions of textures etc. PS5 only has one set. On PC you download Low-Ultra quality, even if you only use one.

ID: hhyij23

Download on PC is 30GB. The actual size after installing is 80GB.

ID: hhvbzfz

PS5 would still need all the various levels of textures for LOD transitions.

I'm sure there are some savings via compression, but the PC version is probably shipping with all audio languages or something like that.

ID: hhviv5d

The pc Version might still have the same Assets multiple times at different locations because not every pc player has an SSD. On an SSD you just need every asset 1x. If this is the case they really should give pc players the option to download just an „ssd built“ as well imo

ID: hhvhcyd

I think it has to do more with setting assets multiple times because on PC they can’t know if someone has the latest gen ssd or just a regular hdd. Probably not worth investing time to release multiple versions of the same game for one type of device. Specially when downloading the game it can just decide what to use or not use

At least on console reading speeds are consistent across their kind

9 : Anonymous2021/10/24 18:41 ID: hhw5g47

don't need dozens if not hundred of duplicate assets, thanks to the nvme ssd.

10 : Anonymous2021/10/24 21:38 ID: hhwv86q

Looks like that Kraken compression tool is still being put to dang good use.

11 : Anonymous2021/10/24 16:04 ID: hhvhvlr

How are people getting the game early except reviewers?

ID: hhvlakn

Reviewers have the game, they just can’t post reviews. Seems like an odd situation where some streamers got the ok to stream early but review embargo is still Monday.

ID: hhvl7x1

Sometimes you get lucky and you get games early from the stores your ordered at. I got FF7R a week early, same for RDR2. It’s still pretty rare overall though

ID: hhvqk24

I remember the GTA V launch on PS3 back in 2013. Our local electronics retailer had copies in the store already a few days before official release date. 10 bucks below MSRP even.

Release was on a Tuesday and I walked out of the store on the Saturday before with GTA V for 50 € and could already play the whole weekend.

ID: hhvursh

If you already bought the game digitally you can download it now, that way it's preinstalled for release day.

My guess is that's what people are talking about file size ahead of the release date.

ID: hhvll7q

If they have a retailer that’s willing to break official date

12 : Anonymous2021/10/24 16:47 ID: hhvoan9

It is showing 43GB on Series X for comparison. PS5 has the smallest size for the game.

13 : Anonymous2021/10/24 16:13 ID: hhvj4ua

gotta love that kraken compression! 🙂

14 : Anonymous2021/10/24 17:52 ID: hhvxxu6

I'm one of few that's actually really excited to play this

15 : Anonymous2021/10/24 22:14 ID: hhx01s0

The compression tech in ps5 is really amazing. I wonder if it's 31gb pre day 1 patch as the Developer confirmed to have 50gb of space for console versions. If this is including day 1 patch that is some great wizardry right there.

16 : Anonymous2021/10/24 15:43 ID: hhvewb0

Never doubt Mark Cerny.

ID: hhvhxpq

Yup, so glad Sony has such a forward thinking System's Architect calling the shots on the PS5 design. The usable storage on a PS5 at 667.2GB should be more than comparable to the usable storage of 864GB on a PS4.

17 : Anonymous2021/10/24 23:44 ID: hhxb8ex

I'll hold out until we see for certain what it will be after any Day 1 patches. There was a similar post about Far Cry 6 recently, which ended up being not quite true after a huge mandatory patch for PS5 that doubled the size of the game.

18 : Anonymous2021/10/24 23:51 ID: hhxc4h2

Its baffling that PC games arent at the point where SSD/NVME is a requirement. The only reason they are still so bloated is because some of the market is still using platter drives.

19 : Anonymous2021/10/25 01:03 ID: hhxko32

Looks like I'm getting a PS5. This is huge for someone with really slow internet.

20 : Anonymous2021/10/24 14:55 ID: hhv8la6

Whats the xbox version?

ID: hhvakm0

42.2 GB. I got the game early from Walmart and I’m installing it right now.
