Guardians of the Galaxy: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S - A Great Game But 60FPS Comes At A Cost (Digital Foundry)
2 : Anonymous2021/10/30 14:22 ID: hin9d4q

TL;DW:

Performance:

PS5

Quality Mode runs at a native 3840x2160p

Runs at a near locked 30fps, with only small 1-2fps drops during transitions and callouts.

Performance Mode runs at 1920x1080p.

It isn’t a locked 60fps during combat, sometimes dropping to the mid 50’s or late 40’s during heavy gameplay.

Has identical visual settings to Series X

Series X

Quality Mode runs at a native 3840x2160p

Runs at a near locked 30fps, with only small 1-2fps drops during transitions and callouts.

Performance Mode runs at 1920x1080p.

Holds 60fps slightly better, but still experiences same magnitude of drops as PS5 during heavy battles.

Has Identical visual settings to PS5

Series S

The only available mode runs at 1920x1080p

Runs at a near locked 30fps, with only small 1-2fps drops during transitions and callouts.

Visual settings are noticeably reduced compared to higher spec machines.

Extras:

Quality mode offers highe

anisotropic filtering, textures, ambient occlusion, geometry LODs, shadow draw distance, and foliage density.

Better Series X performance noted to be either circumstantial, or it being a patch ahead.

ID: hinabbw

Should probably mention the performance as well. Quality mode is a locked 30 most of the time, with occasional 1 frame hitches. Performance mode is significantly worse, with frequent drops during combat to the low 50s/40s. They're slightly worse on the PS5 compared to the Series X. The PS5 also seems to strangely drop frames when moving between areas, whereas the Xbox doesn't have this problem. Possibly due to bad optimization or the xbox being a patch ahead.

ID: hinbyr2

Might be late to comment this, but I fill this out as I go along in the video. It’s finished now

ID: hiqjs34

The 30 fps mode feels super stuttery just turning the camera compared to the 60 mode, though. Maybe I’m just spoiled 🙁

ID: hiok8ii

Bless your heart good sir!

ID: hinqovl

Damn I was considering picking the game up on PS5 but I think I'll go PC on this one.

ID: hioa9c4

I had issues with PC steam version, ended up refunding it. Waiting for a patch or two.

3 : Anonymous2021/10/30 15:06 ID: hinf197

Intuitively it doesn’t quite make sense how 1080p, which is 1/4 the resolution of 4K, has some trouble with just twice the frame rate.

Maybe it’ll be fixed in a patch or something. Other games don’t seem to have this drastic resolution drop for performance mode vs quality mode.

All that said, if the game is good (it seems to be) the resolution doesn’t matter too much to me.

ID: hinuw62

Not just the resolution, many of the settings are dropped too.

ID: hinmp1a

Watching the video it’s not just a downgrade in resolution, the overall performance takes a huge hit in performance mode. Kinda wild actually. Clearly this game has some optimization issues.

All that said, I think some people will be fine with 4K 30fps and if the story is good enough I’m betting they won’t notice the difference.

ID: hip3tex

Glad I decided to wait for a sale. Keen to give it a shot when the rough edges are ironed out though.

ID: hinnusi

Yeah, it seems really odd to choose to go down to 1080p in 60 fps mode. Surely, there's an improvement to that down the line...?

ID: hinm4my

The game is very demanding for some reason or poorly optimized even on PC, which is a bit strange considering it is a very linear game and not open word.

Here you can see even an RTX 3080, (a graphics card that is much more powerful than either next-gen console) struggle to run this game at a locked 60 at all times at 1440p, never mind 4K:

You can see it’s basically hovering on the cusp of 60 quite often and can drop frequently into the 50s range when getting into combat or simply looking at a demanding scene. And this is only the earliest location in the game; supposedly the later locations such as Knowhere drop even harder.

ID: hinmrud

To be fair this is with raytracing settings maxed out, which is usually a huge performance hog.

ID: hio4nre

which is a bit strange considering it is a very linear game and not open word.

There is a lot more to a game's demands than just open vs linear. This game seems to include tons of detail on-screen on a regular basis, with high object density pushed out to pretty far distances.

Not saying they cant do better, but there are some pretty heavy aspects to the visuals beyond what people typically think of.

ID: hiq4fdp

Yeah I don't get that. I have an rtx 2070 super and I'm at 1440p w everything maxed out ultra ray tracing and I'm have only dipped below 60 1 time. DLSS quality mode

4 : Anonymous2021/10/30 21:29 ID: hiownz4

I am switching between the 2 but really enjoy the quality mode. Its definitely a game I'll restart after a patch. even quality mode could use some polish

5 : Anonymous2021/10/30 14:33 ID: hinao9p

This was nearly the first game I played in the Quality mode as the image looks so much sharper and clearer compared to Performance mode, but after getting used to 60fps it’s honestly hard to play going back to 30

ID: hio9k5p

Quality mode is probably the best looking third party next gen game. Rocket and groot look almost as good as the movie versions. Performance mode is the biggest drop in quality between modes I've seen. Game needs a dynamic resolution mode or something.

ID: hio9pqv

You’re spot on there, with the two Spiderman games I couldn’t actually notice a difference in quality between the fidelity and performance modes sitting about a meter away from a 4k TV, but with this game there’s definitely a massive noticeable difference. Alas, not enough for me to sacrifice the 60fps

6 : Anonymous2021/10/30 17:17 ID: hinxi7n

So many people are probably skipping this one because of the awful avengers game. Dont do it. To me, this game is one of the biggest surprises in recent years.

The game in quality mode looks gorgeous, honestly one of the best looking title on the platform.

The story is amazing, the characters are amazing aswell and so well written. The whole game is so well written and there is an absurd amount of quality dialogue here.

The facial animations and the performance capture in cutscenes are honestly ND tier, im not even kidding and the music... my god these 80's songs slaps so hard and even the original rock album created just for this game kicks ass.

TLDR: buy this game if you like quality action adventure, story driven linear titles (and you probably do since you have a playstation) Its honestly sony 1st party quality, well worth the full price and there is a new game + so you can explore the other choices in the game. Im gonna wait until the raytracing patch hits to do another playthrough

ID: hiq5jdi

Hands down one of the best games of 2021, an absolute gem, characters are amazing, graphics are really good and overall the gameplay is great with an amazing story so far. I would not skip out on this game, this, this is what avengers should have been.

ID: hio6d3x

So many people are probably skipping this one because of the awful avengers game.

Which is so dumb. It's frustrating how irrational people are. This game has nothing to do with The Avengers. It's a very different type of game from a totally different studio. Same publisher plus being a Marvel franchise are the only things that tie them together.

ID: hiol3e3

True but at a glance they’re both Marvel licensed games from the same publisher so it’s not crazy to see why people associate them. The average gamer doesn’t dig too deep.

ID: hioepys

That’s like saying “I’m not going to play Jedi: Fallen Order, Battlefront 2 was trash.”

ID: hio5alb

Dude I've been blasting the star lord album all day, it's just the perfect amount of cheese and kick ass

7 : Anonymous2021/10/30 14:26 ID: hin9taj

congratz

poor optimization on every console!

ID: hiprxja

Sounds like another case of rushing it out in time for the holidays.

8 : Anonymous2021/10/30 15:10 ID: hinfipo

The first title in a LONG time where 30fps is better than 60fps. I cant give up that many visual compromises. It sucks. But its perfectly playable and the cutscenes are super sharp.

ID: hinhfdc

I played the first 4 or 5 chapters on performance mode. Flipped to quality and never turned back. I usually prefer the framerate higher, but it's worth getting used to 30 again for the better visuals.

ID: hioth2e

I can't get back to 30 FPS. I don't know why, but on PS5 all 30 FPS games seem to stutter a lot more as i am used from the PS4 or from the Switch. Not sure if this is maybe just imagination, but i don't think so. Something is weird with 30 FPS and the PS5 on my TV.

ID: hing0c0

You know what? Let me say this before you get crucified by the 60 fps zealots: I agree. Absolutely. The low resolution is just too noticeable. In UHD the game looks stunning.

ID: hinhml8

It also helps that the game is 3rd person. I find that 30fps 3rd person is WAAAY more tolerable than 30fps 1st person.

9 : Anonymous2021/10/31 12:04 ID: hir7nlr

That's insane, glad I went PC on this one

3860x1600 ultrawide with 80-130fps with RTX maxed out

Granted I'm using DLSS, but it's implementation is incredible

10 : Anonymous2021/10/30 17:33 ID: hinzxyo

I wish there was an option for a Blend mode. Where it is quality until battle music (if this game has that) starts then it automatically switches to performance

11 : Anonymous2021/10/30 16:05 ID: hinn88a

Playing in performance mode and honestly it looks great. Even streamed it on twitch for my brother and we both said the graphics are really good. I’d say judge for yourself before you play this numbers game by watching this intensive video

12 : Anonymous2021/10/30 14:24 ID: hin9laf

That’s interesting, I’ve been playing in performance mode and I think it looks amazing. It does drop frames occasionally but I definitely thought it was 4k.

ID: hinb2n6

Your probably sitting too far back from your TV to notice the resolution difference

ID: hindnoz

Does it use the Dualsense triggers or haptics much?

13 : Anonymous2021/10/31 05:18 ID: hiqdqsa

This just feels like poorly optimized to me, AMD hardware in general seems to be suffering with performance issue with this particular game.

with RX 5700XT the supposed to be equivalent rasterization performance GPU of PS5 / Series X with Nvidia counterpart GPU such as RTX 2070S is achieving 21% better performance, at same graphics and resolution settings

in most scenario with other games, this isn't the case, usually the 5700XT is equal or even slightly better than RTX 2070S in average 17 modern games.

This particular game however seems to be much more optimized to Nvidia RTX. Similar case to AC Valhalla with it being optimized more on AMD and badly optimized on Nvidia. Resulting with RX 5700XT equaling a RTX 2080 Ti in rasterization performance, where it is usually 25 - 30% slower in average games.

14 : Anonymous2021/10/30 14:11 ID: hin7x3c

TL;DR?

ID: hin9axh

Quality mode: Native 4K/30fps, looks quite nice, some minor visual bugs

Performance Mode: absolute shambles. 1080p/40-60fps, reduced texture quality, filtering etc Even watching on a phone in 360p, it looks noticeably worse in the comparisons.

ID: hinb69j

Pretty surprised because it seems to run fairly well on PC with capable hardware

15 : Anonymous2021/10/30 16:30 ID: hinqr6g

Feel so dumb for getting this on my PS5 instead of my PC. I usually am fine with trading fidelity for convenience since turning on a PS5 is way easier than setting up my gaming laptop in the living room and syncing my controller and stuff.

ID: hinvl5t

I feel you. I got a 3080 Ti 5900X setup but got it for my PS5 because I was worried that PC would have horrible optimization (oh how I was wrong lol).

16 : Anonymous2021/10/30 15:11 ID: hinfpyf

Will there be a noticable difference if you're not playing them side by side? No? Ok, play it on whichever console you want/have.

17 : Anonymous2021/10/30 20:43 ID: hioqk0s

"Did you get 60fps?"

"Yes"

"What did it cost?"

"Everything"

18 : Anonymous2021/10/30 16:09 ID: hinnsfd

I’ve only played this game for 2 hours and it’s amazing. Haven’t tried it on ps5 but regardless of how it runs it’s a very fun game.

19 : Anonymous2021/10/30 17:12 ID: hinwsm4

So basically, if you don’t like playing action games at 30fps then you’re going to have a bad time

20 : Anonymous2021/10/30 21:02 ID: hiot07r

Wanted to buy this for PS5, but now i will buy it for PC. I wish the performance mode would be at least 1440p with 60 FPS.
