Tales of Arise is the ultimate anime JRPG for the PS5 in my opinion

1 : Anonymous2021/11/19 11:06 ID: qxdyoq

This game is just fantastic. I've played a couple of other Tales games as well as Final Fantasy and Persona and Dragon Quest but this one takes the cake so far.

The environments look beautiful, the loading times are nearly non-existent and smooth 60fps make this a total joy to play.

They've also improved on pretty much every aspect of previous Tales games. You can now sprint, climb, jump, roll, swim, etc. The combat has a good depth but it's not overcomplicated. You can now also fast travel, camp and cook with ingredients found in the world.

The story and characters are mature but still have an anime feeling to them. I'm really loving it so far. It's on sale right now if you're interested.

I really enjoyed it until the last 10 hours or so, when the pacing really began to struggle. Good story overall and fun characters. My first Tales game and probably won't be my last.

ID: hl8z38n

same here. i loved it but the end lol

ID: hl9jwkk

Is it bad? I've heard similar things from multiple sources saying it's great until the end

ID: hlasns7

I find most of the tales games I've played really drop the ball in last 10% or so,

Tales of Arise is the ultimate anime JRPG for the PS5 in my opinion

For the PS5 it's more or less the only JRPG out. I guess besides FF7R so it's not like it has competition.

I thought the game was good until the second half. Then it went to shit pretty quickly with lore exposition dumps and the final dungeon is full of trash monsters that cannot be staggered and stand in the way of doors and are just unfun to fight.

The skits I think were kinda lifeless and I preferred the 2d versions from past games. The characters were pretty forgettable sadly too, along with the story.

I have 84 hours and plat trophy so I spent enough time in it. Overall it was an above average experience but not something that would be considered an 'ultimate RPG experience', at least to me.

4 : Anonymous2021/11/19 12:41 ID: hl8xxih

I really enjoyed the first 20 hours, then I started to actively dislike the game as I continued playing. I'm relatively close to the end and need to finish it some time, but I am really burned out on all of the skit cutscenes, cheesy dialogue, and repetitive battles.

ID: hl9riln

Yeah, if this was a gamepass game that I hadn't spent $60 on, I probably would have quit an hour into it. Because I actually bought it, I gave it 10 hours. I cannot believe that this game has an 87 on opencritic, 7 points higher than Scarlet Nexus.

5 : Anonymous2021/11/19 12:08 ID: hl8usd9

good first half, tiresome second half, and is no way in the same league as P5 or DQ11. in my opinion, of course.

ID: hlb4r1m

Yeah I’m a huge tales fan but the last dungeon was absolutely awful and killed the combat for me. Just way too repetitive and huge hp bars for no reason. Otherwise the game has great graphics and atmosphere.

ID: hl8vsgt

I'd say its better than DQ11. I've only played DQ11 in the DQ series and yet it all felt predictable and kinda bland. P5 is in another league tbh

ID: hl9agzu

I'd still pick DQ11 over ToA. Both dropped the ball with their final act though

ID: hl9217l

Simple reason why DQ11 is bland - if you've played one you've played them all. DQ is one of the original JRPG formulas that became popular and has barely evolved, in fact a release of DQ is practically the same as release of CoD/FIFA. People pay for the same goddamn plot and character tropes every time.

I personally never understood the hype/popularity. And the DBZ character designs just remind of /

when people thought DBZ was good.

ID: hl8zpzt

I found it to be better than both actually. Well it doesn't take much for it to be better than DQ11 for me as I didn't like that game. There was just something about it that made it sooo boring for me.

P5 and P5R are amazing games, but I think they suffer from the length. I enjoy long games, but P5 felt like it overstayed its welcome a tad too long.

Tales of Arise for me had great length, great story and amazing characters. I do agree though that the last dungeon was boring because the combat up until then had been fast paced with the one-hit-ko attacks once you filled the blue square, but then they give you a dungeon where you can't use it. It make the combat a bit too boring so I skipped most fights in that dungeon.

6 : Anonymous2021/11/19 12:29 ID: hl8wrzc

I'm sorry, but I can't agree with you. I love the fact that they were able to humanize the characters, bringing casual conversation to the table and stuff. But the real plot is definitively not explored, the slavery take is soooooo complex and they badly scratched it. The cities are very dull, I mean, everybody is talking about the same subject every city has.

The only thing that really got me to play its 75ish hours was the battle. But even thou`, there are only a couple enemies with different color palettes and 2 moves each, combat can get very boring in these >70 hours.

I really don't think it is possible to call this a ultimate anime JRPG when we had Persona 5/R a few years ago.

ID: hl8yea0

Persona 5 is the king right now.

ID: hl993ar

I hear SMT 5 is very good also

ID: hl9dwtg

I agree although I really like trails of cold steel as well. It's fantastic. The protags are high schoolers as well

ID: hl9bffi

I also make the case for Dragon Quest XI. That is like the ultimate classic comfort JRPG.

But I think Persona has made exceptional leaps from each mainline game to the next and has the most fun with its mechanics and pushes the JRPG genre to crazy new heights. Royal is the gold standard of definitive editions.

Persona and DQ are in the same league for me, but it's like trying to compare an exciting cocktail with a hot chocolate. They don't really compare, but you love them both.

Depending on how FF7R continues, that could be a solid saga, but I just don't trust Square to not mess the story up big time.

ID: hl9clj1

Yeah, totally agree with you. To be honest, anime drama stuff is not even my cup of tea, I honestly prefer anime drama free games, DQ XI is so honest to itself and its fans, I could not compare it to something better than a hot choco. I just think that persona (with all that anime drama stuff) is just perfect in anything they tried to accomplish from visuals and sounds to gameplay and storytelling.

Persona 5/R

I haven't played a JRPG since probably Final Fantasy III (VI) on SNES. Is Persona 5 a good game to jump back in with?

EDIT: duh, I played FFVII-FFIX on PSX too. So it's been like 20 years.

Facts

7 : Anonymous2021/11/19 15:01 ID: hl9f0to

For me it's Scarlet Nexus, still have to try TOA

ID: hlac7o0

Same here. It dropped to $35 a few months ago and came back last week at $35. I was hoping for another dip so maybe by Christmas it’ll be in the $20s.

Tales of arise looks good too but they have an ultimate with all the costumes and stuff. So I might wait until that goes lower.

8 : Anonymous2021/11/19 16:00 ID: hl9nk5j

I know this is ps5. I just wanna mention. Shin Megami Tensai V for switch is probably the best JRPG experience I've had in years. Tales was amazing as well. Just thought I'd mention it since it's fresh on the scene and if you have a switch then I'd highly recommend it. Rumor is it's coming to ps as well down the line

9 : Anonymous2021/11/19 18:41 ID: hlacemo

I'm new to the Tales series, but I'd say it's just okay. It's technically fine on a lot of levels, there's just something about it that doesn't really grab me like a lot of my favorite JRPGs do. I personally enjoyed Scarlet Nexus a lot more earlier this year. Super underrated, but it's design was cool and the combat system was one of my favorites in a long time. I'd recommend it to any JRPG fan that might have passed it up.

10 : Anonymous2021/11/19 12:17 ID: hl8vo4k

I got bored of it sadly. Plus the boss fight on that boat was so difficult it kinda ruined it for me

11 : Anonymous2021/11/19 15:12 ID: hl9gjbr

Total playtime of 40hHours, finished the main story haven't gone and done the grind for the high-level content. Played previous tales games and this is more accessible than others and more enjoyable to play in combat.

Glad you are enjoying it but I'm a Persona mark so i have to disagree 😀

12 : Anonymous2021/11/19 20:42 ID: hlavxrn

I haven't had a JRPG grab me like this one has. I keep staying up way too late and can't stop. Definite GOTY for me.

13 : Anonymous2021/11/19 11:17 ID: hl8q7yk

Still waiting for a sale but keen to check it out.

ID: hl8rqm4

It’s 30% off on PSN (the sale is live in Europe, not sure about NA). I’m getting it today.

ID: hl8quoz

Black friday sale starts this weekend!

14 : Anonymous2021/11/19 11:23 ID: hl8qpq4

I dont agree with you on the characters. They become really irritating by the end of the game. The whole second half of the game is dreaful and repetitive.

The first half is 10/10 though totally agree. Enjoyed it much more than FFVIIR

ID: hl8rb2p

I think the second half(especially towards the end) goes crazy with dialogue, like every few minutes of walking there is some dialogue you have to listen to. It's annoying cause you don't want to miss what they say.

ID: hl8t15o

Happy I'm not the only who thought this. There was one place were you walked a few steps, they talked and then you walked some more and then a cutscene. How about you walk, they talk and follow that up with a cutscene. Damn, it's such a fun game to play and the combat is awesome, but the amount of dialogue and cutscenes/skits is crazy.

ID: hl8sr7h

I cringed at some of the logic near the end of the game. It seemed very forced and weird.

ID: hl8wyj3

Me too. Actually made me hate the game by the end. They should've just put their work into extending out the first half of the game and cut the whole bit after the lords.

ID: hl8r0vm

Yeah I gotta agree with this, I couldn’t handle it anymore after about 30 hours, I think after the ship mission I went from loving it to hating it in a very quick space of time.

15 : Anonymous2021/11/19 12:38 ID: hl8xpi5

It looked really cool but I tried the demo and fucking hated it, just not for me I guess

ID: hl93j6r

Also tried the demo and said wtf...Bought the game and loved it, minus, as others have said the last 10 hrs were too much grindy. Also, I dislike the whole finish the game to unlock X area. Give me X area so before I kill the final boss I feel it's 'complete'.

16 : Anonymous2021/11/19 14:21 ID: hl99nd4

its got better production quality but its still the same generic anime stuff with surface level exploration of its themes and key mashing combat like most jrpg's. i cant see how this game might do it for you if past jrpg's didnt do it, and if you already liked jrpgs you probably already know the game.

its certainly no persona, or nier, or 13 sentinels, or smt, or fire emblem, or....

17 : Anonymous2021/11/19 11:57 ID: hl8tqgj

It's a close call between Tales of Arise and Scarlet Nexus for the best RPG of the year.

Tales of Arise does everything the previous Tales games did, but does it better. A lot of game there if you go for doing everything and want the Platinum. It does feature the traditional annoying fishing mini-game that people still insist on putting into these things.

Scarlet Nexus is a different thing though. The story has some things that are pretty fucked up if you think about them. There's a lot of dialogue though, mostly in the bits between the chapters. Good use of the DualSense too. That subtle thing that just makes some of the attacks you use feel like they're doing some serious damage.

Both great games, and both on sale at the moment.

ID: hl8uc2z

>Tales of Arise does everything the previous Tales games did, but does it better.

No it doesn't.

Its combat system is vastly inferior and dumbed down. Don't get me wrong, its a fun game and all but it does not do everything better. Abyss, symphonia, abyss, xillia are all better.

18 : Anonymous2021/11/19 12:13 ID: hl8v8dc

>They've also improved on pretty much every aspect of previous Tales games.

Not the skit system nor the battle system. The only thing i like about the skit system in this game is that its viewable from campfire at anytime. This is nice and all other tales games should of had something similar. Thats my only praise as i hate the comic style and how its just so all over the place with the panels. Its a pain.

And the combat system is vastly inferior. Its not bad but its dumbed down to the point of not being a tales of battle system. Sure it looks like it on the surface but it doesn't play like one at all. And yes this bugs the shit out of me. And the fact i need to pause and change out artes due to how limited it is, is just utterly stupid.

The story and characters are mature but still have an anime feeling to them.

Its sentences like this that annoys the living crap out of me. Theres plenty of japanese made games that are mature. Any fucking persona game comes to mind. But even then its like you are saying theres no such thing as a mature anime when there are. Stop watching shounen anime. There are plenty anime that will fuck with your mind, emotional, intellectual, etc.

This is an alright game. But its not the best "anime" game (its not based on an anime so calling it an anime game is just wrong), its not even the best tales of. And on ps4 and ps5 there are better jrpgs. Its not bad. Its good and fun and i do recommend it but its not what you are hyping it up to be.

19 : Anonymous2021/11/19 11:43 ID: hl8shx7

I agree, it's amazing and for me a goty contender along with FH5.

20 : Anonymous2021/11/19 11:13 ID: hl8py0n

I agree with u 1000% glad im not the only one, its fkin amazing lol

ID: hl8uxld

It got nominated for RPG of the year at the Game Awards next month. Go vote 🙂

21 : Anonymous2021/11/19 13:27 ID: hl930rm

There’s so much talking…..

ID: hl9avub

Its JRPG, of course there is

22 : Anonymous2021/11/19 13:26 ID: hl92xih

Disagree. P5R and DQ11 are unarguably better.

ID: hl9b1r6

P5R maybe but I hated DQ11, massively overrated imo. Generic story, unlikeable cast apart from Jade and the sisters.

Tales of Arise is amazing imo, my 2nd favorite Tales behind Symphonia
