In 10 years people will buy and salvage cars to get gpus
ID: hm1nltdID: hm1ugvdUnfortunately that is already what's happening. I bought my car before the pandemic started and have put 50k miles on it and now it is worth more than what I bought it for at the dealership.
ID: hm26e2hPeople already do that.
I know a guy that has bought three Tesla's during the pandemic, used them for a couple of months, and sold them.
Each time coming out ahead, plus free car usage.
ID: hm1yscyThat happens now
ID: hm2dchcPeople have been scalping cars for the longest time
ID: hm21bf2The catalytic converter thieves are going to have to go to college and upskill with an IT cert.
ID: hm1rnqmY'all are too funny but yet I feel there will be a lot of truth to your statements.
ID: hm2xprlIt'll 100% be true. People salvage car parts today for all sorts of non-car related things. No reason to assume automotive computer parts won't be the same (unless they're firmware locked or hardware DRM'ed).
ID: hm2kgmnInstead of getting the cat they'll be getting the GPUs
-
That's one way to get RDNA2
-
It's possible they are only including the APU for 3/Y and not the dedicated GPU that S/X have. The S/X computer was torn down by a YouTuber and the dedicated GPU is on a removable PCB.
ID: hm2bnyeMaybe it's the SOC for the infotainment system?
ID: hm2dhcvThe teardown of the new S/X computer had one board with an AMD APU with Zen+ cores, and a separate board that had a dedicated GPU.
I'm just pondering that it's possible the 3/Y skip the separate board with the dedicated GPU to save on costs a bit. The dedicated GPU is only for the high-end gaming advertised on S/X, which isn't advertised on 3/Y.
ID: hm478akIt's definitely that because Ryzen is a CPU, not a GPU

I’m pretty confident they just are writing incorrect values to the gateway (I.e. the display is wrong)
ID: hm1c8knIm not sure I follow you. Here is another view from someone in China
ID: hm1chxdThe values are just 0 1 on the car’s “gateway config” which indicate what kind of CPU is on the board. The gateway config includes the vin, car type, 100 other things, etc. I speculate the China factory is just writing incorrect values to the gateway - Fremont did that a lot resulting in people with white interior Ys seeing them as black on the app.

Guess they dropped nvidia? Wonder when that happened
ID: hm18trhthat happened a few years ago, in ~2016
ID: hm1atamThis AMD GPU (APU) was used in S and X refresh models. This is the first instance of the high end GPU power being adapted to the Y to my knowledge
Edit: other sites now are confirming its MCU3. So same as refreshed X/S
Edit: interesting angle from teslascope.
Predicts retrofit might be in range of $2500 to $3500
ID: hm1edngthey’ve had intel atoms for a while now. atleast since the model 3 was released.
ID: hm1ix4uYup, just learning that.
ID: hm1yzk1They used Nvidia for the AI stuff, but they have switched to using their own designed SOC for that.
ID: hm1z5t5Infotainment used nvidia tegra up until around 2016, then used intel (I believe the atom) until recently, and now uses AMD. What you are referring to is for their self driving and such, that’s all proprietary silicon.
ID: hm20se1Fun fact: Nvidia in Spanish, phonetically means “Envy”
ID: hm23c4ffun fact: it comes from Latin so it works in several Latin-based languages
ID: hm3erngYes, that's intentional. Note the evil eye that is green with envy in their logo.

I want one of this car
ID: hm1pc5wI just ordered the Model 3 Performance. They are delivering in December if you are in the US.
ID: hm1woz9Cannot order in my country TT
ID: hm1rij6December 2022?
-
I give it one week until they start racking them up for ETH mining.
ID: hm1d9q4Funny but why not while you charge overnight? LOL
ID: hm1oi73I love the idea of someone buying an electric car to save on energy and then using the car to waste even more energy solving pointless math problems to generate scam coins.
ID: hm27s4uFirst instance of malware on a tesla was found this week. Monero miner that brute forced an ssh login of a rooted car.
-
Am I missing something? Ryzen is a CPU?
ID: hm1bv3uAPU.
CPU+GPU in one package
ID: hm1ctssThis! MUC 3!
ID: hm1ch18All you have to know is that they put a ps5 into your car.
-
Will people start buying Teslas to rip the graphics cards to sell on eBay?
-
Can someone explain why a car needs a GPU in the first place? Genuinely curious.
ID: hm23ya6Infotainment system and laggy graphics in the traffic visualizations
-
I mean it's nice and shiny, but it doesn't really make a dent on overall Ryzen volumes shipped.
-
Can't wait for cars to be used to mine crypto!
-
Mine ETH with your car
ID: hm1palv/s right? Right?
ID: hm2ctw9Apus generally aren't good at mining. Mine straight up crashes trying to do it lol
-
When retrofit
-
is this only an APU or has this thing also an dedicated GPU like Model S/X???
-
Fun fact, elon musk made the names of the cars a joke. All the models spell out "s, 3, x, y" He tried to get the model e trademark but lost so he had to choose a model 3.
-
Putting RDNA2 in a car that's poorly built and tends to want to drive its "autopilot" into the sidewalk or center divider seems like kind of a waste to me
-
Useless
-
Don’t be so harsh on yourself
-
Oh you're right, putting a GPU inside a car to play games is poggers, best thing ever happen, finally I can crash into a school with style! Praise AMD best Company in world! Lisa our god and savior!

dojo is a supercomputer, ie the size of a server hall/ datacenter. you wouldn’t be able to fit more than a few server blades in a car.
-
With the fan speed of a few server blades the car might be a lot faster though. At the cost of your ears.
-
lmao, dojo is a literal supercomputer. Look up how big those things are
-
I wonder if they can upgrade mine 2019 M3P. The Intel cpu is SLOWWW
-
@JayinShanghai just announced BREAKING: China Made Model Y Performance infotainment system has AMD Ryzen processors and AMD GPUs!
-
Is this an APU or an SOC for the screen? What's the role of this processor?
-
Ah, yes the new AMD Ryzen graphics cards
-
A Mazin
-
How many GH/s does the Model Y make?
-
That says amd ryzen not Radeon
-
This has to be a logistical nightmare for tesla. Now theyre competing for TSMCs chip production capacity for amd which is already split between microsoft, sony, and amds own consumer and serve
products. Wayyyyy too many people are dependant on tsmc as is, a single big issue in taiwan could drastically change the entire global chip market setting us back years in tech.Cars don't need modern chips on the newest nodes and no one is buying a car for gaming, we have portable consoles for that.
-
Tesla fab their chips In Samsung, Amd plan to fab the chip Samsung next year.
-
source?
-
I highly doubt they have a discrete gaming GPU, PCB and fan shroud and everything, in that car. Much like consoles, it's probably a custom SoC. You aren't gonna be hacking the dash open to slot the GPU into your PC.
-
Which gpu though
-
I just ordered 25 Model Ys to mine on them. Once I'm done I'll get them GPUs out and sell them for a pretty buck on eBay.

So this is where yesterdays drop went...
-
Can you game on it?
-
Oui
-
Nice.
-
Tesla has best chips in cars, I would say. Others using old shit stuff(chips).
