Be careful with mortal shell as the final boss may glitch out and give you a seizure.

1 : Anonymous2021/12/12 08:25 ID: rekn1a

My little brother who is unfortunately pron to seizures got one and had to be rushed to the hospital because of the final boss of Mortal Shell. I had been stuck on the boss and he wanted to play it so I let him. Moments later the game was glitching out bad as if the arena was just dead locking or something and my little brother went into shock. If you are prone please be careful.

Hope he will be doing fine again soon

ID: ho85at5

He is home and safe it was a very unfortunate accident that happens sometimes but this was just out of nowhere so it was a surprise. Thank you.

Guy with epilepsy here. Tell the devs about this on twitter so they can fix it.

ID: ho85upl

I'm glad your brother is doing better. I have epilepsy, but not brought on by light patterns and flashes, so I know how scary it is to go through a seizure. It's really good he is out if the hospital, they would never release him unless every test came back good.

ID: ho85r5h

That’s great to hear.

ID: ho90jj0

Glad to hear that he's okay.

3 : Anonymous2021/12/12 15:03 ID: ho94aoh

I feel like most games put up a photosensitive warning these days because the lawyers told them too just in case, even if the game is not actually harmful to those prone to seizures.

OP: Make sure you tweet the devs or something, make them aware of the bug and that it can cause seizures. They may not be aware and you could end up saving some folks a trip to the hospital or worse.

ID: hoaedxw

Games have had warnings since at least the days of the Atari 2600 though. It's nothing new and it's a good practice I think.

4 : Anonymous2021/12/12 14:54 ID: ho92z1g

Fuck that's one hardcore souls like.

If you die in the game , it attempts murder in real life

ID: hoa2m2s

That's scary sounds like the movie stay alive .

5 : Anonymous2021/12/12 18:32 ID: ho9zcke

Lots of garbage people in this thread.

6 : Anonymous2021/12/12 09:35 ID: ho8a4du

Glad that your brother is OK.

But the game clearly states photosensitive warning and should be not played by people with epilepsy and seizures.

ID: ho8u2gj

Typically smooth gameplay won’t trigger seizures for most, the warning is for extremely photosensitive epileptics. If his brother wanted to play, chances are that he was watching for a while just fine and got intrigued. What triggered it was severe visual glitching, probably lots of artifacting or flickering lights as those are most common in games, and that’s what triggered the seizure. If you’re an epileptic that is usually fine playing games or watching movies, there was no reason to be afraid going into this game until it started glitching visually

ID: ho982z4

Nigh every video game from the last X years has this warning.

ID: ho8i29b

Yup, this is on the older brother for putting his little brother in an environment like that knowing his condition. These warnings have been on games since PlayStation OG. They don’t say that to be funny.

ID: ho8o9v4

If we're being fair, most games carry this warning as a precaution, regardless of whether or not there's actually any content that could trigger anything. It's an example of CYA.

ID: ho8nxpt

i mean if his brother is watching over his shoulder asking him to try to beat the boss (like brothers do) he’d have no reason to think that his photosensitivity might trigger. he said it only happened after the final arena glitched out. yes the game gives a warning, but i feel like it’s poor to blame anyone, especially the older sibling.

ID: ho8wwsl

Sorry but I don't believe it he's fault if you know what glitch he's talking about you'd know it is an extreme party of flashing light like nothing you ever see in game, even somebody not sensible to seizures feels discomfort to look at it and the first time i also thought about it would give people problems.

ID: ho8xkps

This is not a situation where the game or developers need defending and no one needs a telling off. There were no criticisms made. Stick to wishing the brother well and leave it at that.

ID: ho9qy8x

My brother is able to play games normally. It’s just that insane flashes of different lights and colors and images sometimes trigger it. This was due to a glitch not the base game. Plenty of people that have my brother’s condition can play games normally.

7 : Anonymous2021/12/12 17:48 ID: ho9sn7j

So for people confused my brother is able to play games normally. Yes every game has a seizure warning but normally that just because they involve things with the tv most games never cause seizures. My little bros favorite games as example are Mario kart and smash brothers two very intensive visual games because of all the effects, he has never had a seizure from them because what’s in them isn’t enough to trigger one. What can and has a high chance is something akin to the intro of the show Metalocalpse very fast flashes of different lights that are almost never in game. You can blame me if you want but my little brother should be able to have fun too as should anyone with a condition.

ID: hoa04uv

I was recently starting to rewatch that show and thought the flashing lights seemed completely unnecessary and were probably hell on anyone with epilepsy. I don’t have epilepsy but it’s obnoxious/uncomfortable enough to make me skip the intro every time. It adds nothing lol.

ID: hoawc3t

I dont think they're suggesting he shouldn't have fun, rather that it's a recognised risk in video games and by your own admission this is a freak situation with a bug. I don't think this is really on the devs other than fixing the bug but it'd be nice if they paid his hospital bills entirely it'll be such an inconsequential amount to them. You should reach out to the devs so maybe they can at least put a warning out.

8 : Anonymous2021/12/12 15:14 ID: ho95wc2

Boss so strong it broke the 4th wall

9 : Anonymous2021/12/12 09:56 ID: ho8bmfn

On another note, how is the game

ID: ho8xyls

It's one of the better dark souls clones out there.

Pretty fun to play, decent change with the hardening mechanic.

ID: ho8efl7

Not OP but from what I played so far it’s not bad starting to get the hang of it. You could get lost at times when your roaming but overall it’s not a bad game in my opinion :]

ID: hoa08o5

Ive played like 2hrs but I find the opening swamp so tedious and I was just told its the MAIN interconnected area

ID: ho98aai

Atrocious map design, very limited weapon selection, it's just overall slow and clunky.

ID: hoaachg

Just to add to the wall of reviews. Its fun but short. If you've played a souls game it'll be hard for the first hour. If not longer. A few hours after after starting you'll have decent gear and it'll feel easier and then there's 1, maybe 2 more areas at that point and you'll be done. Again, fun but for like a weekend (which isn't a bad thing, just letting you know)

10 : Anonymous2021/12/12 16:06 ID: ho9dbo3

Fuck everyone in the comments blaming the brother you guys are assholes lol

ID: hoamh5i

It's Reddit, man. Our first instinct is to make puns. The second is to immediately blame someone.

11 : Anonymous2021/12/12 11:30 ID: ho8i75n

well it gave me head pain in first 30 mins

12 : Anonymous2021/12/12 13:48 ID: ho8ugif

Thank you for the heads up, I hope your brother gets to feeling better. I realize there is photosensitivity warnings in games at the beginning but they often fail to explain just how many strobe/blinking lights you'll be experiencing. It would be nice to have an option to minimize that affect in the settings.

13 : Anonymous2021/12/12 12:29 ID: ho8mnhd

I had my first seizure a month ago so you just saved me from this potential one, thank you so much and hope your brother is doing well!

14 : Anonymous2021/12/12 09:08 ID: ho887e1

Upvoted for visibility. Hope your brother recovers soon bro

15 : Anonymous2021/12/12 14:45 ID: ho91pj5

Also be careful when that the boss glitches and one of his attacks AOE becomes LITERALLY INVISIBLE. it makes doing the no shell run achievement oh so fun.

16 : Anonymous2021/12/12 14:45 ID: ho91q3h

Glad to see the game is still broken. Sorry about your brother.

17 : Anonymous2021/12/12 15:15 ID: ho961rj

Glad your brother is ok now, and very kind of you to let folks know about this.

18 : Anonymous2021/12/12 16:23 ID: ho9fsil

I hope he is alright, I haven't made it there yet I stopped midway through climbing a tower. I had a seizure as a result of the reaper gun on the original perfect dark. The room was pitch black and I was sleep deprived as well. Remember if stuff like this bothers you to play in a well lit room and reduce extraneous stimuli.

19 : Anonymous2021/12/12 16:27 ID: ho9ggfe

I myself have epilepsy but thank God I don't have photosensitivity. I hope your brother gets well soon.

20 : Anonymous2021/12/12 17:00 ID: ho9lamf

The boss was so strong it hurt him irl

21 : Anonymous2021/12/12 17:06 ID: ho9m6rf

A boss so tough he gives you a fucking seizure!

22 : Anonymous2021/12/12 18:38 ID: hoa0aly

Is he okay?

ID: hoa100v

He is thank you. This happened a few days ago so he’s better.

ID: hoa71k6

Thank goodness.

23 : Anonymous2021/12/12 19:04 ID: hoa4fke

gives a whole new meaning to "final boss." lol obviously joking

24 : Anonymous2021/12/12 14:20 ID: ho8y6vu

Why is an epileptic person playing Mortal Shell, a game with an explicit photosensitivity warning that shows up every time you start it up?

ID: ho9gd8c

Every single studio game has that these days. If you followed these warnings, you'd never play any other game besides Truck Simulator, even though for most people with epilepsy 99% of games are completely fine.

ID: ho9qxrr

Becuase 97% of epileptics are not photo sensitive.
