Final Fantasy 14 Endwalker is a storytelling masterpiece

Shadowbringers and endwalker will probably go down as some of the best final fantasy stories of all time.

ID: hpfe3st

Always interested by this gane but never had time too.

I created a character years ago, how do you recommend me to enjoy it? Focusing on the storylines

ID: hpffmos

Same question for me. Don't care about raids and all that. If it's got a tight single player experience with minimal partying up then I'd be happy to try it

ID: hpgj607

A realm reborn > endwalker is estimated to be around 250-300 hours. People usually fall in the trap of main lining the game which can or can't work.

Ff14 has a fuck ton of content to do and sometimes it's best to explore that world and go racing in the gold saucer.

If you can get past 2.5 the game usually sticks because everything after that is pretty much the best mmo writing out there

ID: hpfhdn7

Hoping they bring some of this story telling to FF16!

FF14 is a fantastic game but I just can't personally get into the story here because of the MMO trappings. But FF14 being so great has me extra excited for Yoshi-P's go at a single player game.

ID: hpfpxkw

Same. I get burnt out with reading a lot of text, so I know at least for the base game, I skipped a lot of info. I’d love to know the story and play it but I know I wouldn’t get it to it’s full extent. Really hoping I can see this level of story telling I hear so much about in XVI

ID: hpg7vmt

I think HW through EW is some of the best final fantasy stories of all time. Yea, i do include stormblood in that.

3 : Anonymous2021/12/21 17:29 ID: hpg40fo

They should just make the game f2p up to 60 for everybody. I bought ARR when it released but didn’t have a lot of time to play and let my sub expire. That was years ago and despite that I’m not allowed to participate in the trial because I already linked my PSN and Square IDs.

4 : Anonymous2021/12/21 15:48 ID: hpfp3zd

I really want to play this game but I just can't over the "the first 50 hours are terrible but it gets really good after that!" Bullshit

ID: hpfwxyy

I started playing a few months back. And I enjoyed the game from the start and though ARR is not as terrible as people say. But I am someone who do not mind slow games and Death Stranding is one of my favorite games from last gen so maybe my opinion won't hold for most people.

ID: hpfyzds

Honestly ‘terrible’ is an overblown word to describe the first 50 levels of the game, and it’s definitely being perpetuated by people who haven’t even played the game.

Compared to the story levels 60-90, sure the first 50 levels are not as good. Despite it being FIFTY levels, it actually goes relatively quick. There a lot of world building and text to read, but I promise you it is all relevant and things are still being referenced and tied up in Endwalker. It’s a deep RPG story and does take some paying attention, but it’s worth it to follow along because it’s that good (but doesn’t feel that way at first). I’d compare it to a long series of novels with a lot of world building at first, like The Dark Tower or Dune.

ID: hpgd6rj

Definitely not terrible, just slow (also there’s lots of reading but that’s a plus for me tbh)

ID: hph3a3y

The first 50 hours reallly aren’t terrible but they’re terrible compared to the later expansions because they’re in the best game of all time discussion

ID: hphhlcd

At least 40 of those hours are spent sitting in a queue of 6-8k people -_-

ID: hpg8yy7

Anyone who says that has no idea what they are talking about. I would be very interested to hear about all these mmos out that have such great first 50 hour stories they make FFXIV story terrible?

Shit, if I’m honest, FFXIV has the best final fantasy story of ANY final fantasy game in the last 20 years.

5 : Anonymous2021/12/21 17:35 ID: hpg4xys

After having 12-13k hours in the game, I am just as curious as to what is ahead as I was thousands of hours ago.

I think the first big arc of the story got a very fitting end and I can only hope they keep up the quality.

I found the story to be paced a bit bad at 2-3 parts where certain areas overstayed their welcome but overall they didn't make me enjoy the game less.

6 : Anonymous2021/12/21 20:22 ID: hpguih9

I’m still in Stormblood and can’t wait to get to Shadowbringers and Endwalker.

7 : Anonymous2021/12/21 16:04 ID: hpfrbo6

I'm really hoping to dig into the game when the Steam Deck hits, if it is even possible to play it well on the device...

8 : Anonymous2021/12/21 14:43 ID: hpfg6yg

I have tried this game 4 or 5 times and I just get so tired of reading everything.

ID: hpfjmcz

It gets much better once you get past A Realm Reborn and into Heavensward, iirc every expansion has a higher proportion of voice acting than the previous one pretty much. The story has become a lot easier to follow and stay engaged with since getting into the first expansion personally.

ID: hpfye7z

I agree with this comment. I finished ARR and hated 14. Can’t even understand how people think it’s a good story or engaging. Maybe it was back in the day, but it is t anymore. Heavensward, on the other hand, was great.

ID: hpfkr5d

That makes sense! It's just getting there. I end up telling myself "why am I reading this when whatever game can get me into the story now?"

Does that make sense? I just give up cause I don't want to pound through it all.

9 : Anonymous2021/12/21 17:52 ID: hpg7kv2

Does anyone know if the performance for the ps5 version has been improved since its launch? Last I heard, digital foundry was actually recommending playing the ps4 version for better performance which I found to be a bummer.

ID: hpgzza3

Tbh the ps5 version is almost the same as the ps4 aside from 4k menu’s but you need to play in 4k to see those and that would be in 30fps so you really don’t miss a lot.

Although yeah I definitely agree it sucks.

10 : Anonymous2021/12/21 18:22 ID: hpgc8gw

Only thing I'm always hung up on is that I have to pay for both expansions and then a monthly fee on top of it. It's always why I don't play this.

11 : Anonymous2021/12/21 15:21 ID: hpflcfc

Honestly it drags on at some points… the 1st Thavnair visit and the lvl 88 quests could have used with cutting 10 quests at least

12 : Anonymous2021/12/21 18:25 ID: hpgcq7e

I honestly won't really call it an masterpiece imo.

Like the story was good in the beginning but by the end tho I felt it was unfortunately okay at best.

I had some positives with it when it comes to how good the cutscenes are in this expansions when I felt they really stepped their game up on and helps me pay attention more to the story due to my ADHD. But I have some negatives with it when it comes to the final 2 map zones where I felt the story kinda dipped.

Also I wish they can just get rid of fetch quests all together in the next expansion or decrease the amount of it even more since I still feel they are still an constant problem of dragging the pacing down in the story and I usually zone out into space immediately when doing them or be on my phone while doing them.

After I said all of that, I still however put it way above all the expansion and ARR due to how much they improved on the QOL and gameplay this time around like making it very easy to level up now from MSQ quests so you don't have to be locked out from them due to being under leveled. That really helps alot for players like me who hates having to be forced to do duty finder to level up. And the expansion despite how I feel about the story was still fun and I love the way how it presented it story more than shadowbringer, the cutscenes being great, and soundtrack musics in the cutscenes being so good to listen to.

ID: hpgkp87

They really did a much better job with the leveling. I only did MSQ for my primary job in Endwalker, and I only got hit with the you're not high enough level for a level 89 quest, and I was only just short. It's a huge improvement over previous expansions.

13 : Anonymous2021/12/21 19:51 ID: hpgppwg

People 3 days ago: “This story is kinda bland and arguably one of the worst.”

People 2 days ago: “Best ever omg wtf.”

People yesterday: “This story is kinda bland and arguably one of the worst.”

People today: “Best ever omg wtf.”

I wonder what’s on the forecast for tomorrow. I don’t personally know anyone who thinks any story in this game is high up on the storytelling list in comparison to other FF games.

I mean I started it a couple weeks ago, its really not that complex.

Pretty standard in terms of how the usual MMO starts go

ID: hpfsxth

It really is not.

I mean of course it's overwhelming to start a MMO that has been going on for almost 10 years but if you just focus on the main quest, the game guides you progressively to everything you need to know.

ID: hpfx9fe

Yeah, reading is hard...

15 : Anonymous2021/12/21 16:42 ID: hpfwwnv

Is it better than 7, 10 and 12?

ID: hpge8p2

Personally I think it’s the best Final Fantasy (I have played all of them except for XIII)

ID: hpg6evk

No game is better than 7.

ID: hpge1f8

I’d say 10 and 14 are

ID: hphc0gk

personally 14: EW, 14: ShB, 10 and 12 are all very close, but i'd rank them in that order

cant comment on 7 tho coz im too young and the OG FF7 does not hold up

16 : Anonymous2021/12/21 18:48 ID: hpgg9af

I wish I could play this I just don’t have the time to justify for a paid MMO.

17 : Anonymous2021/12/21 16:42 ID: hpfwy3v

Do I need to raid and shit to experience all the storytelling?

ID: hpg4hl8

No, but raids are side story. Well except for the first 24 people raid trilogy in base Game, but those raids are a faceroll.

18 : Anonymous2021/12/21 15:23 ID: hpflk0u

If I could just skip the garbage that is ARR then maybe I would play. They lost me at collecting oranges after like an hour of play

19 : Anonymous2021/12/21 17:10 ID: hpg14yr

As much as I love Final Fantasy XIV, Endwalker is not a storytelling masterpiece. Heavensward and Shadowbringers? Yup, I would agree with that. But Endwalker? Yeah, no. That's not to say the story is subpar in Endwalker, because it's not, but there are some really bizarre big story decisions the writers made that weakens the story immensely. Only highlight the spoiler tag if you've gone through it.

Previous expansions built up Zodiark as the ultimate villain in the Final Fantasy XIV universe. So the revelation that He is not only not the true the villain, but it's some other previously unmentioned dark force that despaired because they're emo was really disappointing. I know Final Fantasy has done this before (FF IX and FF X come to mind), but it's really a letdown that the writers swerved that much, forgoing all the emotional momentum.

20 : Anonymous2021/12/21 15:05 ID: hpfj58v

I’d love to play unfortunately I don’t have time to wait 3 hours to login.

ID: hpfte9z

Queues have improved pretty drastically in the last week; I've been waiting 35mins to an hour most evenings. Still annoyingly long, but we're talking ~1800 in queue compared to 5000+ on launch day. Another week or two and it should be pretty manageable.

Remote Play is great for keeping tabs on it while you do other things.

21 : Anonymous2021/12/21 17:22 ID: hpg31gc

Knowing basically nothing about FF14, isn’t it so old now that newcomers are a bit late to the game, that they won’t know what’s going on since the story’s already been completed? I thought that happened with the first version of the game, so they rebooted it? I’ve been turned off MMORPGs ever since Diablo when you’d start off and instantly get killed and robbed by a level 60 player.

ID: hpgeqak

The game forces you to play all content from the beginning, so it's basically impossible to be lost in the story unless you immediately buy a story skip to get straight to the latest expansion (don't do this). The game also encourages experienced players to run old content (synced down to low levels) so that even new players can always find groups to get through stuff like Dungeons.

The game is also very friendly, both from a mechanical perspective and community perspective. Other players basically can't interfere with your gameplay experience 99.9% of the time. The community is also generally friendly and welcoming to newcomers.

ID: hpgf8ru

Damn! Okay, I’m going to give this game a shot, it sounds like they’ve figured the MMO thing out in a way that old single-player types like me can still have an experience 🙂

ID: hpgalqg

Nope not at all. If you started you'd have a lot of content and story to go through and enjoy. Even FFXIV 1.0 is woven into the story as well.

There's a good amount of players who started out when Shadowbringers came out or slightly after (a sudden surge in players coming from WoW).

22 : Anonymous2021/12/21 18:00 ID: hpg8urh

This game seems cool but I absolutely despise mmo gameplay

It’s so fucking boring

24 : Anonymous2021/12/21 14:34 ID: hpff377

Is there anyway to restart this. I started it but then got busy and forgot all the mechanics

25 : Anonymous2021/12/21 16:17 ID: hpft65e

Easiest way is probably just to queue for Sastasha in DF and just work your way up dungeon by dungeon. Or else just run around killing ladybugs for a while.

26 : Anonymous2021/12/21 16:12 ID: hpfsjqv

start a new character?

27 : Anonymous2021/12/21 16:16 ID: hpft53y

start a new character.

28 : Anonymous2021/12/21 20:04 ID: hpgrnm4

I tried few times. And I love all ff games. But this is not for me. It's still to much mmo. Good for people who don't mind. But I don't have nerves to play mmo anynorr. Even as solo it is not really like single player. Not even close. I'm not saying for mmo that it isn't great solo experience. But who thinks this game is structured like single player... It isn't.
