- Edge Megazine: Deathloop is the game of the year of 2021
-
Deathloop is an amazing game so I could definitely see it being goty for some.
For me it was personally Returnal with deathloop being 2nd.
-
Good game, not GotY material. Like pretty much every other decent game this year.
Bring on 2022.
ID: hqn65krID: hqndikfIs there really only one way?
I haven't played it much yet, but I do want to give it a real chance eventually since I loved the Dishonored games.
ID: hqo9jdyTHANK YOU.
I get downvoted constantly because people keep saying this is GOTY but it was extremely underwhelming especially with the ending. The ending in general felt rushed and lazy.
I would put returnal above this but again another one that didn't seem to wrap it up well even with the second ending.
ID: hqn5j01Returnal is by far my GotY.
ID: hqne8jlSame, randomly picked it back up yesterday and have beat it 3 times already. The game is just amazing.
Edit: yes I beat it 3 times in 1-2 days. I also have over 100 hours in it and the platinum. The game is fantastic.
ID: hqnptdlAgreed. I enjoyed my time with Deathloop by Returnal is just leagues better.
ID: hqofw08Good game but I’ve played the first biome 3 time and all three times my run has ended in a game breaking bug.
ID: hqqlphoI got to the second part of the game and didn't feel like picking it back up.
ID: hqmuoznYeah I enjoyed it somewhat, but I enjoyed Dishonored 1 and 2 a LOT more. I know it was the whole point and concept of the game, but I didn’t care too much for the repetitive nature of it all.
ID: hqnda6vbut I enjoyed Dishonored 1 and 2 a LOT more.
Same. Both Deahtloop and Prey have issues with their endings, but Prey is a much better game, in my opinion. I liked Prey a lot.
However, Prey didn't have the massive marketing push / hype from Sony behind it.
ID: hqn28y5I think prey was also better than deathloop. And deathloop certainly didn’t match dishonored 1 or 2. It’s the most overrated arkane game imo. Those 3 deserved way more attention
ID: hqo2v3kI don't think there was a God Of War or RDR2 tier game this year, but to be fair those are legendary games.
ID: hqna4evDon’t think we are playing the same games.
ID: hqp2hljReturnal would like to speak with the manager

I need Returnal to be like $20

Just to add to the discourse, I really bounced off this game. It’s not enough of an immersive sim, and it’s not enough of a fun, linear shooter either. Reading vague, pseudo-scientific terminal entries that I can barely make sense of, then just being given a marker of what to do next is not fun, and the humor gets old, quick. learning about the island and stuff isn’t very fun or engaging either. Also for the bosses, they are regular humanoid enemies, but there are no hit markers when you shoot them, so I never feel sure of my shots. Invasions have this problem also, and make the whole thing more frustrating than fun.
ID: hqnj8o6The premise is super good, and aesthetically the idea is fun, but yeah-- the worldbuilding and character stuff is nowhere near Arkane's other games. Its clear that they really struggled with getting that stuff to work with the nonlinear, multi-time, changing variable visionary system.
I'd even argue that, fundamentally, that central system is broken. If you basically need waypoints to establish what the character needs to do, and there is ultimately only one non-intuitive way to complete the game, it just doesn't work.
ID: hqndk8hI was thinking of getting this or Returnal first, what do you recommend?
ID: hqnekduI am HOOKED on returnal right now! It’s the best ps5 exclusive game in my opinion. It’s an easy decision, get Returnal. It’s hard at first but once you get the feel for it it becomes addicting as fuck.
ID: hqnqhu8Having beaten both, I think Returnal is the better game and it has more replay value. The narrative that it’s “hard” or “impossible to beat” is overblown and really just reinforces the actual game’s narrative that Selene has landed on this planet that reconfigures every time she dies, setting an impossible task before her. But everything you do gets you closer to mastering your weapons/traits/artifacts/consumables/parasites/etc. as well as the knowledge you learn about the enemy attack patterns and map knowledge. So the point being, you’re always making progress. It’s a phenomenal game and a must play, imo. GOTY for me by a mile.
ID: hqneibxReturnal is pretty hard and not so casual. Deathloop is quirky and fun and casual. I liked both but I would pick deathloop
ID: hqndy97Returnal by far
ID: hqnwdf9I got this game on Black Friday and just couldn’t get into it. The acting was really good, but the game became repetitive pretty quick. I’m going to start Ghost of Tsushima

As somone who's been following Arkane for nearly two decades, I wasn't even surprised about how much I loved Deathloop. It just felt like business as usual.
Hands down my favourite Devs. And yes, 100% my GOTY.
-
Nah Resident Evil Village is obviously GOTY
-
I loved both but returnal is twice as good
ID: hqmtdj5I feel the opposite
ID: hqmx1gvDifferent strokes for different folks!
-
Deathloop was such an underwhelming game. Really nothing special at all and just meh.
-
Did I love deathloop? Yes, do I think it desrved to win goty, hell no. Deathloop is fun, action packed, and just a damn good time, but that doesn't mean It's perfect. The story could be the better and weapon balancing is off the charts, It's a great game but ratchet and clank, it takes two, or dread definetely deserved it more.
-
Deathloop is in my queue, excited to see how it is. But I find it hard to imagine it beats out “It Takes Two” as my favorite for the year. That game was incredible 10/10 type stuff.
-
I have been playing deathloop since launch - I admit that my first 10-15 hours I wasn’t really sure if I liked this game. However, facing off against invaders was addicting because it gives that dark souls sense of 1v1 intensity which I enjoy immensely.
I’m now over 180 hrs into this game and I am still playing almost daily because I am addicted to the short, intense gameplay moments each level provides. I will admit a LOT of setting tweaking was required to make the game control much better. If anyone is confused why this game is getting so much praise I’d love to discuss why I enjoy this game so much. Cheers!!
-
It's a great game, in my top 3 for the year, so a publication giving it GOTY is totally reasonable to me. I don't really see why there's always so much controversy about it. I feel like whenever a game gets widespread acclaim, a bunch of people start tripping over each other to be the first to call it overrated.
-
Returnal is far superior.
ID: hqqcfjsReturnal is a fun action game but a mediocre roguelite
ID: hqmooipI find it difficult, repetitive, and boring. Super cool atmosphere and enemies and stuff, but I think of 3-6 games I’d rather play than be frustrated playing Returnal. Not to mention the time commitment.
ID: hqo91u6Since they added the feature to suspend cycles, the time commitment issue is by far a much smaller problem. I've got a toddler in the house, and get the few odd hours for gaming here and there. Got Returnal on the very same day they implemented the feature, and now I'm gunning for platinum.
-
Not a bad choice. I had alot of fun wanting to crack the case and figure out how to do things. Gunplay and abilities were smooth as hell. Voice acting and characters were good too. It felt fresh, something I havent felt in modern games for a long time. My only criticism is the ending. Very dull and underwhelming considering the game was on such a incline. I dont know why people cry over these things its an opinion. Whilst I played and really enjoyed returnal, I wouldn't call it the "best" game I've played this year but 1 of the many good ones. We haven't had a tremendous year in gaming let's be honest, I probably wouldn't give it to deathloop myself but still.. I'm not mad at it
-
It is my game of the year too. They took what seemed an overly complex concept and made it such a fun and easy to play game. I couldn't wait to pick it back up and do another loop. Getting the final loop completed and finishing the last level was some of the most intense and enjoyable gameplay I can remember. I was down to one more hit killing me and being stuck at the wrong end of the map and just made it. The only other game that came close was Returnal, but Deathloop just wins for me.
-
Sweet! Just got it for $22
-
People here struggling to come to terms with the fact that some publications like this game.
-
Holy shit this sub is so bitter about this game. Yeah maybe you prefer returnal but clearly others don't. I didn't really end up enjoying returnal anywhere near as much as deathloop
-
People be praising Rift Apart but when Deathloop gets awards everyone goes bananas.
It’s a great game, and the fact that it got a GOTY just goes to show how much of a slow year this was for AAA titles. It’s not my GOTY but honestly there’s very little competition this year, and Returnal doesn’t really get so close, despite liking that game as well
ID: hqo0559that it got a GOTY just goes to show how much of a slow year this was for AAA titles
Or maybe have you considered that people genuinely like it and think it's a title worthy of the title, and not because they couldn't think of anything else to give it to?
-
Well deserved. I think the marketing team fucked this game up because people for some reason hate this game post launch.
I for one loved every single moment of this game. Amazing amazing game.
This game excels in fun which is what I care about the most
ID: hqn6db6The marketing made me think the game would have have different ways to complete the objective of killing the visionaries
-
All the talk here is about Deathlop being at number 1, but I'm just sitting here loving that Chicory and Wildermyth are in the top 3, and the fact that Bonfire Peaks is in the top 10. People may think 2021 was weak in the AAA space but it was another great year for indie games.

I thought it was an amazing game up until I realized that there's only one way to finish it and the endings are super abrupt and lackluster. It was in complete opposition to the marketing for the game.
