Socom

ID: hts8ajo

I put way too many hours into the first game. Back when there were a couple hundred people playing.

ID: htsfbgj

The studio no longer exists from what I understand. Zipper's last game iirc was MAG, and sony decided to not follow up with a second, or even port it to PS4.

ID: htsjbrp

There last game was actually Socom 4 ironically which is what killed the studio. It came out the week before PSN went down for s month because of the network hacking.

sly cooper

ID: htrpad3

After Sly 3, Sucker Punch moved onto other games like Infamous. As a result, Sanzaru Games(the developers responsible for porting the Sly collection) were left to develop Sly 4. The game was left with okay reception, but poor sales and a lot of fan backlash. As a result, Sony let the IP rest. And now Sanzaru Games is owned by Facebook, while Sucker Punch is currently busy with Ghost of Tsushima, leaving no one to make a new Sly. There was also a Sly movie in development, but after the failure of the Ratchet and Clank movie, it was cancelled.

However, there are a lot of recent rumors that there is a new Sly game in development.

infamous

ID: htrlo43

I'm guessing its two main reasons:

Sucker Punch(the Infamous devs) have decided to focus on Ghost of Tsushima, a new IP that is in the height of its popularity right now. I'd expect that they're busy on a GoT sequel. I guess Sony doesn't really have much of a reason to return to Infamous, an open-world superhero game, considering that they have Spider-Man, who might as well be the most famous superhero on the planet. Especially since the games are actually somewhat similar gameplay wise, they probably wouldn't want Spidey to overshadow Infamous.

Bit of a shame, I really liked Infamous 1 and 2.

ID: htrosbh

However, there are rumors saying that Sony is reviving the inFamous IP around early September, prior to the Showcase. You can see how a lot of people thought the Spider-Man 2 reveal was inFamous when it started off.

And Sucker Punch is a studio that likes to work on one project at a time, but this time they expanded the studio and are working on a couple of projects, wuth one of them being a multiplayer project.

ID: htrqbsm

I was expecting a bullshit reason but that makes a lot of sense especially since they clearly see the demand for both ip so they'll focus on the newer one first and see if demand for spiderman is still there

ID: hts9uyx

Do you feel they could have kept the infamous story like going?

Jak and Daxter

ID: htrmjci

ND is busy with other stuff, namely The Last of Us. I doubt that the people at the studio "hate" Jak and Daxter like a lot of people say, but I feel like the current people working at ND don't really have much of an interest to work on J&D, when they're busy with other stuff. And most of the original people who worked on Jak and Daxter have long gone.

It is worth noting that ND did try to bring back Jak during the PS3 generation. It had realistic graphics and more realistic character designs. However, the team quickly realized that "it wasn't Jak and Daxter anymore" and they didn't want to disrespect the series and the fans, so they left it dormant and worked went on to create the Last of Us.

ID: htrmxap

Finally someone with a head on their shoulders on the subject, have a upvote. The internet seems to have a lot of fans clamoring for a new J&D game when there just isn't enough dev interest.

ID: hts7ol5

They made the right decision imo.

ID: htsavqq

Jak & Daxter isn't necessarily binned for ever more

Then why has it been 17 years? cries

Ape Escape

ID: htruq93

This one's a bit tricky(and long) because there isn't an official reason as to why Ape Escape left so I'm going to mostly speculate and make educated guesses.

If I had to guess, it was probably because of the actuals devs of the game, Japan Studio. From what I've heard, Japan Studio had been somewhat of a messy studio, at least since the jump from PS2 to PS3. There were a lot of projects that were in development but due to a lack of leadership, most of them were scrapped. It's possible that Ape Escape 4 was one of these titles, as it was actually supposed to be development at one point according to this article:

Heck, even in 2016, they made a tweet that said that they would "be staring work today", implying that they would be working on a new game. But nothing ever came out of it. And in 2019, the Ape Escape Twitter account promoted stuff for the 20th anniversary, but nothing came out of it.

And then in 2021, Sony decided to close down Japan Studio because were messy and they hadn't made anything that was successful since the PS2, with the sole exception being Astro Bot. All of their other successful games(like Bloodborne) were made with help from other devs. So they just kept Team Asobi(the Astro Bot) and moved a lot of the external development teams to XDev.

So now it's up to Team Asobi. However, it hasn't been clear if they even have interest in a new entry. It would be a shame if they didn't though, especially seeing as how the DualSense is a thing. It would be the best time to make one right now.

Killzone

ID: htrqj47

Guerilla Games is busy on Horizon Zero Dawn, which became an unexpected success. They said that they aren't planning on making a new Killzone and that they're pretty much done with the series.

Also, Sony as a whole likely doesn't have much of a reason to come back to the franchise because there are a lot of more popular third-party FPS like Call of Duty or Battlefield that have way more brand value and would probably outsell whatever Killzone game they'd put out anyway.

ID: htsfpgv

Yeah, but those games don't have the chirp.

ID: htskd27

You know..... If Microsoft takes CoD from Sony eventually .....I could totally see this coming back.

I couldn't find much, but according to this PS Blog, there was a LoD2 in development at one point, but it was cancelled and the devs moved onto other projects.

Jet Moto

ID: htrxvt1

Jet Moto 3 was a failure due to low marketing. Two games, Jet Moto 2124 and Jet Moto SOLAR, were in development at separate times but both were eventually cancelled. 2124 also had a studio head that didn't support the game at all.

ID: hts89f5

Wow! Thanks for dropping some gems! Had no clue, but I loved Jet Moto!

Resistance is something someone will eventually bring up. I know the game director of Days Gone wanted to do an open world title after Days Gone, but upper management at Bend shut that down, and wanted to instead do a Syphon Filter reboot (the new rumor is that their project is a Men in Black game now).

Resistance

ID: htrz337

Insomniac Games, the developer for Resistance, has said that they have no interest in working on a new entry. There was a game pitched at one point, but it was rejected by Sony because there were too many post-apocalyptic games at the time like the Last of Us and Days Gone. It's also worth noting that the Days Gone creator pitched an open-world Resistance sometime, but it was also rejected.

Sunset Overdrive (Yes, it is a Sony IP now)

ID: htrv3cg

Insomniac is busy with Spider-Man. I doubt Sony would really care all that much since it's mainly Insomniac's IP that they own solely because of the Insomniac acquisition.

Littlebigplanet (haha have fun)

ID: hts5nkt

Well, technically, this one isn't dead, since they released the Sackboy spin-off back in 2020.

But if you mean mainline LBP, then I'd probably say that the main reason is because Sony is currently supporting Dreams, which is VERY similar to LBP, so they don't want to risk a new LBP overshadowing Dreams(in a similar stance to what happened with LBP Karting and ModNation Racers). It doubt they'll let Sackboy "die" as Sony did say that LBP3 sold more than they expected it to, and Sackboy is one of their most popular characters, so I doubt he's going anywhere. Maybe after a few years of Dreams support we'll a new entry.
