People REALLY love Spiderman.

ID: hwik8g8

Literally the most profitable superhero ever.

ID: hwiplpc

The only actual contender I can think of is Batman.

ID: hwihbc5

Also helps that insomniac are amazing developers

ID: hwisvjc

Yeah it being a great game they often update really helps, I’m played through both twice & still go back just to swing around

ID: hwj2fwb

I can't wait to see what they'll do with Wolverine.

ID: hwikosy

I was just about to say, lol. I liked the movies but I didn't think people were that into the game.

ID: hwim66g

I feel like Spider-Man 2018 and Miles Morales are the the few Spider-Man games that are great because it has an original story, awesome combat, and it's not a movie tie-in (movie tie-in games are usually horrible). So not only do they bring the loyal Spider-Man fanbase but there's also people like me who just likes open world games.

I love the Miles Morales game and I'm not even a really a Spider-Man fan and the only comic books I read were Punisher Max and that Daredevil story were Karen dies.

ID: hwiquxu

My fave superhero

3 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:22 ID: hwi9b9w

Man, the Spider-Man brand is powerful.

It'll be interesting to see how Wolverine does.

ID: hwihlgw

It really is but let's not forget there have been like a dozen Spider-Man games before and none of them were this acclaimed. Insomniac did a lot of the heavy lifting here.

ID: hwj1kcq

The only other ones I remember in my life are the ones from the ps2/GameCube era that came out around the time of the McGuire movies. They were actually pretty damn solid as well for the time they came out, played the hell out of them back then haha.

I’m sure there’s been a ton of crap ones that I just don’t even know of though

ID: hwiillz

While that is true and Insomniac did an amazing job making the Spiderman open-world amazing to swing around in, I think part of it is also due to how popular Spider-Man has become since the MCU. I feel MCU characters are way more popular now than they were like 15-20 years ago. The 3 Spider-Man movies that have come out have all made almost $1 billion in the box office. (Source)

I’m so happy that Insomniac is finally getting the kind of success other PS studios have enjoyed for quite some time. I’ve always felt that with Ratchet and Resistance, they never really got to experience the kind of stardom they finally have (not saying Ratchet/Resistance were bad- I’m actually dying for a new/remastered Resistance game

ID: hwigizz

Bluepoint would do a good job remastering Resistance but I think they're working on something original?

5 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:50 ID: hwidcyv

This game is so fun. I beat the story a while back and I still hop on every now and then to do the extra stuff around the map.

ID: hwikq0m

I've 100%ed it and I still boot it up every now and then just to swing around a bit lol

6 : Anonymous2022/02/11 15:34 ID: hwik2bc

Yooo, GoW Ragnarok + Spiderman 2 bout to do gangbusters

ID: hwkwub7

Hot take:

Spiderman REALLY needs to get some depth. That game did everything right but that everything got SUPER repetitive by the end. Stealth wasnt necessary as you can tank most crews with some skill.

Loved the game but was deff burnt by the end. I got the special PS5 edition so playing the first then Miles back to back wasnt happening. I'm ready to go back to Miles soon, but prob closer to Spiderman 2

ID: hwof9vs

I think Insomniac is aware of that. It's probably why the team at Insomniac behind Spider-Man 2018 (which started development in 2014 and released 4 years later) is taking 5 years to work on and release Spider-Man 2 in 2023.

7 : Anonymous2022/02/11 15:12 ID: hwiglmf

Can’t talk about Spider-Man without mentioning Insomniac. Studio absolutely crushed it way more than the missed the mark on anything. Neither game is flawless by any means, but these games just absolutely shred. Money well earned.

ID: hwj6vio

This sounds weird to say but Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was the first PS5 game I got and I don’t think i’ve ever had so much fun playing a video game

8 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:19 ID: hwi8vib

Hopefully this shows there's a market for games that are not 400 hours long. I don't have time for that anyway. Give me a medium length, cinematic experience with excellent gameplay, and I'm all in.

ID: hwif225

For real. I'll take a 20 hour, highly polished story driven game over an Ubisoft type game every time.

ID: hwimkm0

Guardians of the Galaxy was exactly this and I loved it. Didn't take itself seriously and beat it in a week or two of casually playing.

ID: hwih33o

20 to 30 hours is a perfect length

But Miles Morales is like 7 to beat the story, barely over 10 to 100% everything

Definitely too steep a price for that

ID: hwil7gu

Agreed, but I really didn't think Miles Morales was all that great, maybe coming off of Spider-Man I guess in comparison. I like Assassin's Creed Odyssey much more. I understand the Ubi sized games aren't for everyone, but I think there own sales show they are popular too. There definitely needs to be more smaller sized games for people like yourself as well though. There can be something for everyone!

ID: hwije24

Sure. But this game was too short.

9 : Anonymous2022/02/11 16:23 ID: hwirrha

Isn't GT the highest selling Playstation IP? How is it not the leader in terms of dollar sales? Or am I missing something?

ID: hwizkso

Didn't read the article, but the title suggests single game and not IP series? If true, I'm glad to see Kratos is on the podium.

ID: hwj0vbw

GT 3 (which I think was the best selling PS2 game and the best selling GT Game) often went on sales, and they included it in the discount Greatest Hits line of games. So compared to Miles Morales, a 70usd game that has never been part of a discount range (it may have been on sale, but is not at a permanent discount), GT3 may have sold for less per copy on average, and so have lower sales in dollar value than SM:MM. GT3 sold about 15M copies, compared to >20M each for GOW and SM globally. So depending on the actual numbers for SM:MM, it is possible that SM:MM has also outsold it in raw numbers.

ID: hwj80rd

Miles is only $70 if you get the SKU with the remastered version of SMPS4. Otherwise, it's $50. And both versions are currently on sale for $30/$50

10 : Anonymous2022/02/11 16:10 ID: hwipmsl

Estimated to. NPD doesn’t have any insight into digital sales. So you can’t take their data to be wholly representative of the true total sales.

11 : Anonymous2022/02/11 17:00 ID: hwixt9k

How much did the other games sell? Sony just announced that Horizon Zero Dawn just reached 20 million in sales PC and PS4 combined.

12 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:48 ID: hwid146

Miles Morales felt like a playable MCU movie. The soundtrack, the cinematography, the writing, the set pieces. Really really impressive. I am beyond excited for Spider-Man 2!

ID: hwixyzq

The venom powers made the game. I was worried it would just be a re-skinning of the first game, but venom punching dudes off of skyscrapers never once stopped being immensely fun.

13 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:26 ID: hwi9vta

I wonder if it would be ahead of GoW if it was a $60 game instead of $50. Also shows how great GoW is that it competes with freaking Spider-Man

ID: hwida0d

GOW in one generation has become a fucking juggernaut GOW3 went from selling 5.2M to GOW PS4 selling 20+ Million. GOW PS4 has sold more copies than any Halo game individually.

ID: hwk0xj2

Yeah it continues to blow my mind how successful GoW was. Obviously it's a popular brand, but GoW 2018 had stratospheric sales for an exclusive

ID: hwkqcst

It had one of if not the greatest reveal of all time. I think that had a lot to do with it.

ID: hwiehtu

It’s a good question, I think the price is part of its success.

I think games like Returnal are hurt by being priced so high despite of their lower budget and market appeal.

14 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:26 ID: hwi9zcp

can we see more superhero games given to sony because of this?

most of them are copy n paste

15 : Anonymous2022/02/11 18:24 ID: hwjbjy3

Pretty sad for a DLC that was 10 hours long. Great game but it didn’t really do it for me with the short story and lack of bosses.

16 : Anonymous2022/02/11 17:42 ID: hwj4mxi

I bought it to replay Spiderman on PS5. Haven't touched MM yet. I know 4 other people that are in the same boat. I'll eventually play it, but it was bought for the first game, not for MM.

I wonder how many of the sales are people like us.

17 : Anonymous2022/02/11 15:51 ID: hwimocu

Insomniac are amazing devs. I didn't think I would like MM as much but I do. Venom powers are top notch. Game is visually a masterpiece and I can't believe how well they pulled of 60fps RT mixed mode o quality/performance.

And just think, SM2 is being developed as we speak.

18 : Anonymous2022/02/11 16:21 ID: hwird7a

Afaik Mat only tracks US sales (maybe even just physical? Can't remember). So it's definitely a sign that it has sold well but it is not for sure that it is actually third

19 : Anonymous2022/02/11 14:26 ID: hwi9xxo

Not bad for a "glorified DLC".

ID: hwiczn2

It’s a standalone expansion though? Like Uncharted The Lost Legacy, Infamous First Light, etc. They are spin-offs based on their original. Usually shorter experiences. It’s not a bad thing though (since they are not full priced nor should be).

ID: hwibc2z

I really thought the same at first, but 100% the game is fun as fuck and makes it worth it.
