Cyberpunk 2077 Next-Gen Patch: The Digital Foundry Verdict

TL;DR Resolution in both modes and on both consoles hovers around 1440p.

Performance mode has similar and at times even higher resolution than raytracing mode and framerate rarely dips from 60fps.

In raytracing mode raytraced shadows can have a big effect in select moments in-doors but especially in the open world it doesn't add much. Reflections aren't RT but are of higher quality in raytracing mode.

Xbox has marginally higher resolution, PS5 has marginally better framerate.

Based on this I'd say go with performance mode

General technical state: Tom says this is how the game should have launched but it is still not perfect and he hopes to see further patches

ID: hxra7ju

After playing it a bit on PS5 after a year and some change of playing it on PC, I’d say performance mode is the way to go. It doesn’t look that much better with raytracing, but the 60 fps makes a huge difference.

ID: hxqc2qi

framerate rarely dips from 60fps.

Are we playing different games? I notice dips often.

ID: hxqkb9b

According to the video it depends on where you are in the city.

I guess if you spend a lot of time in these trouble spots you will experience a lot of framedrops.

ID: hxqilpw

Maybe its whatever you are playing on. Been running clean on my PS5, zero problems

ID: hxqd1b4

framerate rarely dips from 60fps.

??? the framerate dips are abysmal while driving. hell, even running through the city quickly there are frequent visible dips.

Is cyberpunk fixed?

ID: hxqcjmg

Yes. It's currently on sale on ps store for 22$. Good deal ngl. Maybe hold up on it for a bit till they reveal march ps plus games. Just sayin. Offer ends on March the 3rd.

So it looks like the consensus is that the game is finally able to run well. But here's my question to those who have since put a good amount of time in playing post-patch: is the actual game fun?

ID: hxqep54

If you go into expecting Witcher 3 but cyberpunk then yea, if you going into expecting Cybperunk RDR2 then no. The main part of this game isn't the open world its the main quest and side missions which are really great. The main issue with the game is the way CDPR marketed the game. They made it seem like is was going to be this super immersive game with tons of interactivity but its not.

ID: hxqokjo

Hit the nail on head. It feels just like the Witcher 3 in a cyberpunk world. Good writing, mediocre combat and a visually creative but shallow open world. I’m honestly enjoying it a lot, I find it quite immersive. But if I had played it at launch with the expectation CDPR set and without this latest patch, I definitely would have been incredibly disappointed.

ID: hxr1u8h

Exactly this, and i think this is where a lot of the hatred came from.

The actual story and choices are very fun, the world is awesome to look at, and the gameplay is good. But it is not to be compared to GTA or RDR2.

It’s partially the developers fault though. They said a lot of B.S. when they were marketing the game that made it seem like we would have all of this freedom similar to RDR2, and it’s just not there.

I bought cyberpunk on launch and i had a great time with it, but that’s probably because i didn’t read or watch any previews. After finishing I jumped on to the forums and it is crazy the amount of things they promised that just wasn’t in the game.

ID: hxr1f8x

I really wanted Cyberpunk RDR2. The lack of slice-of-life gameplay really bummed me out. Sitting down to eat, or at a bar, little things like that, really took RDR2 over the top for me. More of an RPG in some ways than literal RPGs.

ID: hxr835a

I wouldn't even say it's as immersive as the Witcher 3

ID: hxqqzzs

It's the witcher 3 in first person with guns.

ID: hxqogbc

I think for first time players, it would be a good experience. Returning players can't expect huge changes in gameplay or content as it didn't really add significant extras to do. For £20 when on discount, the game is value for money. I'm on my third playthrough having completed on PC and I've abandoned my PS4 save because of trophies. Performance is much better, less bugs/crashes, its fun but obviously as a returning player I'm looking for more content. I don't expect much anymore from updates in Cyberpunk having been disappointed with the patches they churned out in 2021. Still, for those that havent played it yet, I would recommend it on discount, ignore the noise of the past expectations ppl had and its not that bad.

I always thought the story, characters and overall city design was great so thats still good. The next gen patch certainly helps a lot by putting the shine back on everything and the few new small additions add some life in the city. However I think it still clearly has the overall problem of not living up to the obvious potential it has, the closer you look the more you can see how dead the world is and outside of quests there really isn't anything to do or interact with what so ever.

Its still 1 billion times better than when it released and I do recommened it. I had a lot of fun playing and I think most people would too there'll always just be this feeling that its not quite living up to what its true potential could quite obviously be. Maybe in time but for now its still fun for sure.

ID: hxr2icd

28h in on the PS5. Still some visual bugs that don't work like mods that once put cannot be removed, random subtitle text seen from 10km away, unable to use scan at all, driver that has the car upside down, etc. All of these can be fixed either by reloading the save or restarting the game. I have played and finished the game when it first launched so imho this version should've been the 1.0. I think the game can become good.

ID: hxr0h58

I thoroughly enjoyed my time with CP, the story is engaging and well written, the characters are memorable and the quests and missions are fun and don’t feel repetitive. If you’re into great story and characters you will enjoy this game.

ID: hxr2qmn

I bought it this week (PS5) and have been having a lot of fun.

World design is interesting and a very cool cyberpunk depiction, story so far is solid and often quite interesting - I’ll avoid any spoilers. Melee combat seems “meh” but the ranged combat has some interesting unique mechanics and a loot system of sorts that keeps things fun. Some stealth options that feel like if Hitman and WatchDogs had a slightly dumber baby, but they can be fun.

Is it buggy, still? Yeah, I often get textures glitching out and a lot of collision detection and clipping mistakes. But usually a “turn it off and back on again” solution works fine. NPCs will sort of walk through you rather than around you most of the time. But nothing totally game breaking - though I have experienced some higher level wonkiness like locking myself in a building and having to reload an earlier save, some things where I just sort of scratch my head and wonder why they designed things that way, but overall I’ve been having maybe 30 hours of fun so far in an interesting world with some fun mechanics and good story/stories.

For the $25 price I can’t complain, especially if another patch comes along to address some of the wonk.

ID: hxqna77

So I never bought the game until 1.5 and the next gen version came out. Personally I’m having a ton of fun. The open world is fantastic, night city is wonderfully designed, combat is great, driving actually feels good, and overall the story is captivating.

It’s kind of like a more immersive gta with a cyberpunk overlay and far better combat. I’d recommend getting it.

ID: hxr2gnb

Yep, same. I am having a blast and it has me pretty engaged.

ID: hxqnk1t

The best part is the character quests and specific side missions. The main quest is whatever and outside of missions there's nothing to do. I played to kill time. I did like some things though

ID: hxqysju

It’s Deus Ex meets Bladerunner but querky like Vampire Bloodlines. I’m really enjoying it. The gunplay is decent, swords are fun, hacking aspect is cool and apparently gets OP so will continue investing there. Super immersive, the world is vibrant and detailed and like Witcher it’s got loads of distractions and worldbuilding baked in. I’ll probably see it to the end before I start Elden Ring.

ID: hxr1mck

Ohhhh hell yes. Just do it. I decided to wait 1+ more year for the next gen patch and my god was it worth it

ID: hxrizw4

I wanted to enjoy it at 1.0 but it just wouldn’t let me and I quit after about 10+ hours.

This update I’m almost 30 hours in and not quite caught up to where I was in the main story because I’m actually enjoying all the side content/quests/driving around/exploring. I don’t feel like the game is about to throw me out so it gives me a lot more leeway to actually take my own path.

Sure immersion gets broken by something stupid every once in a while but nowhere nearly as much as launch. I’m glad I waited and came back to it.

5 : Anonymous2022/02/20 19:25 ID: hxqlztu

I’m playing the game right now and loving it. There is something magic about the game when it isn’t annoying me by being overly buggy and having no crowd. I hated the first Cyberpunk edition but 1.5 fixed the game for me

6 : Anonymous2022/02/20 20:59 ID: hxqz98e

Anyone elses HDR still look super washed out? Can't dial the settings in to get the blacks to look as good as SDR.

ID: hxr4ruq

I gave up, it’s really bad. I feel like the game looks a lot worse with HDR on imo

7 : Anonymous2022/02/20 20:50 ID: hxqy3vv

It's running smooth on PS5 and looks awesome. I'm playing on 60fps and haven't experienced any glitches or bugs so far. Glad I waited for next gen update.

8 : Anonymous2022/02/20 21:06 ID: hxr09zo

If this is how the game launched it would have been great

9 : Anonymous2022/02/20 18:55 ID: hxqhmhr

I'm not impressed with the animations, still kinda janky. compared to the games that have come out this past year, you wouldn't think that would even be an issue in this current gen of gaming

10 : Anonymous2022/02/20 20:27 ID: hxqur7c

Its my favourite game of all time, but the driving is the worst, i keep crashing and cant turn for shit, how do i fix this? It wasnt like that the first time i played through it.

ID: hxrb7ce

Reduce steering sensitivity. Start little by little until it’s better

ID: hxrcesq

Thank u i will try that next time

11 : Anonymous2022/02/20 17:19 ID: hxq3gqu

I started playing this a few days ago on PS5 for the first time.

Been going around saying how impressed I am with the game and how I am enjoying it!

If I had seen this Digital Foundry first I probably would’ve held off on it again. Important lesson for me I think.

ID: hxq4ms3

As someone who played it on PS5 via back compat in 2020 I think I share the sentiment of this video. This upgrade is a bigger deal for PlayStation in that it introduces graphics modes, both with higher resolutions than what was possible before, a more stable 60fps experience, and actual crowds which were missing on PS4 because they had to heavily reduce them in order to get a somewhat stable performance. All that together is a really good package imo. It’s not the grand overhaul some were hoping for, but more of a refinement and indicative of what the original launch should’ve been.

Edit: also that this game probably shouldn’t have come out in 2020 to begin with

ID: hxqnxfo

Not sure why anything said in the review would change how you feel about the game. You clearly enjoyed it. Vast majority of people now feel the same way since 1.5. Keep enjoying the game. Once they add more updates, you can always jump back in with new game+ which will undoubtedly be added.

12 : Anonymous2022/02/20 18:19 ID: hxqccff

Tried the 5 hours trail and it was solid. No bugs, no crashes or any sort of issues. They did a good job fixing the game.

ID: hxqo8bq

I’ve had 3 crashes over about 15hrs total play time.

Other than that, it’s running really well and genuinely feels like a solid world! End of the day, they created an awesome environment and world with satisfying gameplay mechanics, finally shines through now it runs well!

13 : Anonymous2022/02/20 19:21 ID: hxqlei3

Is anyone really playing with raytraced shadows on? It’s such a worthless setting unless you’re a fan of 30fps.

14 : Anonymous2022/02/20 16:56 ID: hxq01v3

Is it just me or are the ray-traced reflections not that good like I couldn’t tell the difference between performance and ray traced modes

ID: hxq128o

The game doesn’t use Ray traced reflections unfortunately. Considering how taxing it is on PC, CDPR probably couldn’t implement them in a way that had stable performance. They opted instead to use Ray Traced local shadows and to increase the resolution of their screen space reflections. According to the video, the ray traced shadows don’t really do much in the open world but do enhance interior scenes by adding diffuse shadows to objects and people which helps to ground the scene more. I’ve noticed this in my time using the mode as well, it definitely helps in those parts of the game

ID: hxq18lh

lol sorry I meant to say shadows but typed reflections which again CDPR don’t want to include reflections cause they have known of the character cause of not being able to complete the game

ID: hxq0e1z

Same here. Absolutely not worth going 30 fps for that

15 : Anonymous2022/02/20 17:55 ID: hxq8shx

Xbox has marginally higher resolution, PS5 has marginally better framerate.

Easy explaination. Series X has more CUs (Compute Units) which helps more in resolution. THe PSF has higher Boost Clocks which helps in more Fps

ID: hxq9fgr

In a lot of these games it’s shown that the Series X will try to push games slightly higher with res, but then fall a few fps short when compared to the PS5.

But people take these numbers and create console wars about which plastic box is better lol

16 : Anonymous2022/02/20 17:31 ID: hxq59dy

This game needs more Motion Blur levels instead of a simple on/off option. I'm playing HFW right now in Resolution mode and the default motion blur was too strong for my taste, but when I switched to medium it was perfect for me. Cyberpunk needs this too.

ID: hxqgdvp

PS5 does not have this? On PC, I can select low motion blur in this game.

17 : Anonymous2022/02/20 17:45 ID: hxq7b3l

I bought the steel book copy of this game for $10 last summer, and it’s been shelved ever since. I’m currently giving it a go, it looks pretty damn good IMO. Actually, I forgot I applied $5 of Best Buy cash and got it for $5.50. The steelbook alone was worth that IMO.
