3 : Anonymous2021/04/03 04:32 ID: gt7s391

Honestly while I never played Final Fantasy, im really interested in the game, is it possible to start now, or do I need to play some older titles in the series?

Edit : not sure why im getting downvoted, but ok

Edit 2 : It seems Reddit is buggy and im not getting downvoted, one second its - 5 and other its plus 19

Each numbered Final Fantasy is a stand alone entity with it's own universe. lore characters, story, combat system, and so on. They just share some common things like summons, and other creatures like Chocobos, moogles, etc. and spells and whatnot. But even those things have different lore behind them from game to game. You could really just make them new IPs and it wouldn't matter.

TLDR: No you don't need to play any other game before starting a FF unless it's a direct sequel like FFX-2 or FFXIII-2, etc.

ID: gt7stdj

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to write this.

ID: gt7sn9h

Dive into the rabbit hole of the free trial man. So much damn content and one of the best OSTs of a game ever. The beginning of the game (or vanilla if you like), without expansions is starting to show it’s age, but hot dang the expansions are awesome. No other ff experience needed! Although there are tons of fan service from old games.

ID: gt7spu5

Thank you for the reply, I will look into the games.

ID: gt7sp7p

Each different numbered game in the series is standalone for the most part. They do some direct sequels (X-2, XIII-2 and 3, etc) but generally, each game is entirely standalone. There are lots of thematic callbacks and easter eggs to previous games in the series, but it's not at all needed to understand the story.

The standard messaging about FFXIV I'll give, it's an MMO, and the story is kinda drawn out at the beginning. You do have to play with other players, as dungeons and trials (8-person single-boss instances) are mandatory to progress the story. However, the game is designed in such a way where you won't have issues getting groups for them, and people generally are really helpful, as they know what they're signing up for. (You can level all the classes on one character and the best/most popular way of leveling up alt. classes is doing random dungeon roulettes). As well, there is a LOT of travelling back and forth for the story early on. (The game absolutely does get better over time however)

Frankly, there's no reason not to try the trial. It's stupid generous right now, actually consisting of the base game and the first expansion entirely, up to lvl 60. There's two expansions past that.

Shadowbringers, the latest expansion, is widely thought of to be one of the best gaming experiences out there.

Anyway, that's the long and the short of it.

ID: gt7szh3

Thank you for this, I will try the game and see how it looks like and I will see if I like the gameplay mechanics, and overall feel of the game, from what I saw online, the game could be interesting.

ID: gt88ytn

Keep in mind that even if you don't like the first Final Fantasy game you play, you should give the others a chance because some FF games play very differently from one another. Personally, I think FF7-FF9 is the series pinnacle.

ID: gt8bcve

Nah they're all separate. If you have a PlayStation then Final Fantasy VII Remake is the ps+ game for the month so I'd recommend having a look at that, it's my favourite in years

ID: gt7w4vf

There’s like a few games that share the same universe like ff12 and ff tactics and ff9 I think share one. FfX and X-2 share a different one. FFXlll and Xlll-2 and Xlll-3 share one. Not sure any others do.

ID: gt7yioj

Thanks for this.

ID: gt8ruyh

9 is not in the Ivalice series. It's just 12, the 12 DS game, Vagrant Story, Tactics, Tactics Advance and Tactics A2.

ID: gt8bhwn

They're all separate. If you want turn based try ffx/ffx-2 remaster, if you want solo offline mmorpg try ffxii remaster, if you want mmo try ffxiv, if you want more actiony gameplay try ff7remake which is free on ps+ until tuesday.

ID: gt8f7r7

FFXIV is in a fantastic state atm. Best expansion so far and with the final arc of the main story coming to an end next expansion, its definitely a good time to jump in. Played it for years now, definitely worth the price.

ID: gt8k770

I bought it by accident and it's the best accident I've ever done Okok so I tried the trial before and figured yeah this game is alright, nothing too interesting you know. Then I saw it on sale, bought the new expansion but it didn't come with the other expansions lol so I had to buy those as well, $50 bucks for all of it with the 30 day subscription. Now I've been playing it nonstop for the past two weeks and it's been the greatest feeling ever, the game looks nice in its overwold, music is amazing and it's an mmo with a really helpful, what's not to love.

4 : Anonymous2021/04/03 06:05 ID: gt7z07y

I started playing ESO and im ngl the game looks so ugly compared to XIV lol. Hopefully the PS5 upgrade in summer makes it look way better

ID: gt8aopn

What fps does it run?

ID: gt8c69q

ESO is locked to 30.

ID: gt8wqb2

Combat in ESO is the only thing keeping it from joining the upper echelons of MMOs in my opinion.

5 : Anonymous2021/04/03 11:05 ID: gt8glka

This looks insanely smooth. Hyped for the 13th

6 : Anonymous2021/04/03 05:38 ID: gt7x3yj

Did anyone catch the news!!!

1440p SUPPORT!!!

ID: gt7yose

Does that mean ps5 will support 1440p??

ID: gt7za10

I'm wondering the same thing. I still don't believe Sony will ever have 1440p as a display option in the PS5 settings so what I'm imagining is in game you'll only have the option to output 1440p while using a 4K TV/Monitor.

7 : Anonymous2021/04/03 10:27 ID: gt8ebut

Been seeing similar comments all over this thread about "Not having time for MMOs"

What if I told you, FFXIV could be played without ANY of the MMO hangups?

No grinding. No farming. No interacting with ANY other people. Or other senseless MMO bullshit. The story is completely Solo with the exception of matchmade dungeons.

One thing that alot of people don't seem to realize is how different FFXIV is from nearly all other MMOs. Where others like WoW, Destiny, Black Desert, etc... revolve around tedious grinding to endgame just to get a sliver of content, FFXIV is almost solely focused on its Story. So many people see "MMO" and instantly turn off, thinking it's just a shit story with tons of padding and grinding, which it isnt.

Meaning, you can play XIV exclusively for its Story(Which is one of, if not the best in the FF franchise), without having to really mess with many systems, side content, or other things that would distract you in other MMOs.

XIV has a free trial that gives you the entire base game and Heavensward expansion for an unlimited time. Meaning no purchases, subscriptions, or other barriers to try it out.

The base games story takes approximately 20-40 hours if mainlined. Heavensward adds another 15-25. So time isn't really an excuse.

ID: gt8wq7f

Exactly. I have a full time job, a wife and kid, other hobbies, and actually play other games, too. In 1yr, I have half the jobs to lvl 80, have done every raid series, made tons of friends, and am eagerly awaiting the next patch.

Im not an MMO person. But I love XIV.

ID: gt8nzeq

The issue is the bullshit between the mainstory. I dont want to do tedious fetch quests that slow the pace of the game

ID: gt8u833

Didn't their recent update cut like 40% out of the main quest, specifically focusing on tedious junk? That number could be wrong.

ID: gt9bsy4

Can I play FFXIV solo though? My friends don't really play MMORPGs and it always seemed to me that your supposed to play these games with other people.

9 : Anonymous2021/04/03 09:45 ID: gt8bz3g

I'm sure this game is great but I've tried it each time there's been a trial and it's so overwhelming for new players after all these years of iteration. The hud alone is just a mess of symbols and numbers. I played and enjoyed XI back in the day but I prefer the offline games. Those also have an end point lol.

10 : Anonymous2021/04/03 12:05 ID: gt8koio

Hi new player here. I do agree that the hud can be really overwhelming but this game is very customizable to how you want it to be. It took me a few minutes to tidy it up a bit and resize my hotbars for me to actually feel like my screen isn't cluttered and I've been enjoying the game a lot. My only gripe is not playing sooner cuz man I really want to catch up

11 : Anonymous2021/04/03 10:13 ID: gt8dizg

XIV has an endpoint. Several actually.

Every major story release ends in a way where you could easily walk away with a complete story. That goes for every Expansion so far. There has been an overarching plot since 1.0 that will now be resolved when Endwalkers releases, but in terms of each expansion and their stories, they conclude very well as their own games.

It's not like some Destiny or other live service nonsense that strings you along for years with no resolution.

12 : Anonymous2021/04/03 10:17 ID: gt8dseq

Interesting! Good to know.

13 : Anonymous2021/04/03 14:22 ID: gt8x01l

I'm not a big fan of MMOs. Just waiting patiently for 16 and Remake part 2.

14 : Anonymous2021/04/03 07:25 ID: gt8445o

The thing that annoys me about XIV is that I love the franchise, I've played it before, I know I enjoy it, everytime I see anything to do with it, I want to play again....but I KNOW I don't have time to play an MMO!

15 : Anonymous2021/04/03 16:39 ID: gt9c944

Yes, this was why I stopped playing in 2017 - I had just finished college, got married, moved across the country, and got a full-time job - all in the span of like 3 months. There were many times I wanted to come back but kept thinking "ugh, I probably don't have the time."

I just recently returned, and I'm so glad I did! I still don't really have much time, but I just play what I'm able to - even if it's just 3 or 4 hours a week. There's seriously something so special about this game. I think it's a couple things for me:

You can just feel the love and hard work that the devs have put into the game. Even when the game feels a bit clunky or outdated (for example - the cutscene animations are quite basic) - it still has this charm that captivates me. Maybe it's nostalgia? Either way, this is such a great game to just spend an evening relaxing, going through the story at your own pace, and enjoying the soundtrack and open world.

I love, love, LOVE the FFXIV community. By and large, the FFXIV community is friendly, welcoming & accepting in a way that I have not found in any other gaming community. Not that you can really tell who is on the other side of the screen - but I think the community is also way more diverse than most gaming communities - older people with jobs who don't have enough time to play, teenager & college kids with too much time to play - a good mix of men & woman, lots of LGBTQ+ people, etc. Again, their real identity isn't obvious and doesn't matter per se - but having so many different kinds of people leads to a vibrant and welcoming community that is always entertaining.

16 : Anonymous2021/04/03 08:56 ID: gt89b42

Treat it as a non mmo. The story is mostly single player. And when u do play dungeons, trials etc to progress the story, you play with randoms the game finds for you.

The story is quite involved and entertaining.

17 : Anonymous2021/04/03 09:13 ID: gt8a979

Yeah, I'm tempted to play the free trial because from what I understand I can pretty much play the base game and first expansion without having to pay!

18 : Anonymous2021/04/04 20:27 ID: gtdr3jw

People like me kinda got boned lol. I don't have much time to play but I bought it on PS3 at release, didn't realize it was a monthly sub so didn't stick around. Ported it to PS4 and bought the first 2 expansions when it was newer and played for a month again and stopped. I never even hit level 50 do to time constraints. But because I bought the game I can't get the "trial" which let's you get to level 60 without even paying anything now. Kinda crazy how if you pay for the game you don't get free months or anything but the trial people get the first expansion and to level 60s free

19 : Anonymous2021/04/03 08:38 ID: gt88bh1

I love the world and vibe of this game, it’s through and through final fantasy, but I always fail to get into it because of the slow combat.

20 : Anonymous2021/04/03 08:40 ID: gt88fps

Level Monk or Ninja to lvl 80 and it should be fast enough for you.

21 : Anonymous2021/04/03 08:43 ID: gt88key

Yea I was a monk player, but I just find the whole combat rotation really repetitive

22 : Anonymous2021/04/03 13:40 ID: gt8su3e

yonke monita

23 : Anonymous2021/04/03 10:17 ID: gt8drko

Looks the same as PS4 tbh. I feel like they make the environment everywhere so dark and gloomy to hide how bad the textures actually are.

24 : Anonymous2021/04/03 13:33 ID: gt8s5zj

The latest expansion was extremely bright due to the story of light taking over, I actually had to turn my brightness down because it was so overwhelmingly vibrant at parts, like Il Mheg for example, as incredible as it looks, it's anything but dark and gloomy.

25 : Anonymous2021/04/03 15:02 ID: gt91arq

Hows the new player experience if you're wanting to tag along with a friend? I.e. a friend and I would be both starting from the beginning. I read something about the story is solo-progression? Can you at least party up and both make progress together?

26 : Anonymous2021/04/03 15:56 ID: gt97ez1

You can definitely do quests together! Look up what classes you are interested in playing, as there are three different starting areas. All though, three variations of the story quest merge at around level 16

27 : Anonymous2021/04/03 15:03 ID: gt91dpt

Man. I somehow fucked up my account of this game and now I can’t retrieve my character.

28 : Anonymous2021/04/03 16:53 ID: gt9dteo

I’ve been wanting this to come to Xbox for like a decade I’m so jealous of you guys hope you enjoy

29 : Anonymous2021/04/03 17:20 ID: gt9h01w

Thought it was XVI :/

30 : Anonymous2021/04/04 08:13 ID: gtbuml8

Have they changed how the game looks? Or is this a different final fantasy 14 than the mmo one?

31 : Anonymous2021/04/04 12:46 ID: gtcc3kt

I started playing it because Rob from PlayStation access said it had a great story and some 200 hours in I just got to Heavensward and I’m finishing up my zodiac weapon. There’s so much game in that game it really is great despite being janky once and a while

32 : Anonymous2021/04/03 08:35 ID: gt884ua

Hi, just wanting to know what drugs everyone is taking that makes this game look good to them?
Thanks in advance.

33 : Anonymous2021/04/03 09:03 ID: gt89odm

Sniffing chocobo farts

35 : Anonymous2021/04/03 07:34 ID: gt84nb0

A 720p video. Tough to sell the power of the PS5 if you don't even use full HD.

36 : Anonymous2021/04/03 07:53 ID: gt85s5n

This live letter is a 3 hour stream aimed at people who already play the game, and the PS5 version is a free upgrade. They're not trying to sell anything.

37 : Anonymous2021/04/03 08:00 ID: gt865rh

sell /sel/

verb

2. persuade someone of the merits of. "he sold the idea of making a film about Tchaikovsky"

If you are showing people this video in the PS5 subreddit, then it is also a waste of time because it's not even showing new features and most of the viewers already weren't playing the game.

38 : Anonymous2021/04/03 15:49 ID: gt96kim

Looks like a ps4 game

39 : Anonymous2021/04/03 20:23 ID: gta2t18

It was designed originally as a PC/PS3/PS4 game so the graphics look dated. There's only so much you can do with an eight year old game in making it look super nice on the PS5 without doing a full graphics engine overhaul which is a considerable amount of work.

40 : Anonymous2021/04/03 06:05 ID: gt7z0h4

I’ve never understood the hype of Final Fantasy, it looks like an anime mobile game.

41 : Anonymous2021/04/03 07:17 ID: gt83nl8

Easy bait because each final fantasy looks pretty unique.

42 : Anonymous2021/04/03 11:45 ID: gt8j6lr

I’m sorry that you weren’t blessed with sight

43 : Anonymous2021/04/03 07:38 ID: gt84w1t

You take that back right now, Bub.

44 : Anonymous2021/04/03 14:42 ID: gt8z4d4

Riveting tale, chap.

45 : Anonymous2021/04/03 13:23 ID: gt8ra1e

Is it really any different? It’s been outdated for a while, like most MMOs

46 : Anonymous2021/04/03 15:38 ID: gt95aoq

I really don't understand these videos, do people really watch someone else playing instead of just playing it themselves? Seems utterly pointless.

47 : Anonymous2021/04/03 17:31 ID: gt9i7q5

It's basically a monthly vlog from the developers that shows us what to expect in the upcoming patches lol. Not pointless at all.

48 : Anonymous2021/04/03 17:36 ID: gt9iutf

Uhm, kind of the whole point of twitch though.

In this case though it's a kind of developers diary where they show the progress of features and patches currently in development. It keeps the subscribers updated on the development of the game.

49 : Anonymous2021/04/04 15:11 ID: gtcqgdi

You don’t get the point of a dev stream?

50 : Anonymous2021/04/03 17:51 ID: gt9knzm

last time i played this game it was just a bunch of lolis in lingerie running around...

51 : Anonymous2021/04/03 20:35 ID: gta44jw

Well sure... you have a bunch of male and female toons running around in skimpy armor but you have plenty that are running around with more modest armor on that covers up a lot. And loli is the wrong term to use since FFXIV doesn't have them due to ethical concerns.
