Days Gone Director: 'If You Love a Game, Buy It at F***ing Full Price'
2 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:48 ID: guz8zo9

Like everyone else has said, people aren’t gonna buy it right after it releases if it’s reception is that it is full of performance issues. And I’m sure as hell not gonna roll the dice by pre ordering.

I’ll happily pay full price for a new release if it deserves it. I just bought It Takes Two for 40 bucks. It’s from the people who made A Way Out. Amazing coop game and I want to see more from the developer, so I’ll happily vote with my wallet there. And guess what? It’s a fully polished, finished game.

ID: gv0cdft

I bought GR Wildlands on discount. Loved it. So I bought Breakpoint at launch. Now I'm never buying another game at launch.

ID: gv0g8t4

Breakpoint was such a let down after wildland... the disc served me as a coaster 1 month after release

ID: gv080ls

I can’t wait to get It Takes Two to play with my partner once we finish Sackboy and Crash 4. Looks like a ton of fun! And it’s shocking to hear that it’s finished and polished on release day considering EA is the publisher.

ID: gv0dmgp

My wife and I platinum'd it already. Loved every second. These devs definitely deserved our money.

3 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:45 ID: guz8oh1

There's very few franchises I'll buy day one and that list shrinks pretty quickly.

ID: gv0p8xp

FromSoftware is my day one purchase, no questions asked.

ID: gv161sh

Day 306 with no Elden Ring news after the trailer. I am hollow

Edit: my bad its been over 306 days of the daily elden ring update, in reality it has been 679 days since the trailer.

4 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:32 ID: guyzyja

Didn't the game score low partially due to how buggy it was at launch?

Certainly stopped me from buying it at full price.

ID: guz1z97

In that case, if they love making games, finish your games and make sure they work before selling them

ID: guz5kej

You missed the f***ing adjectives!

ID: guz7ueb

“If you want us to buy your game at full price, make sure it’s not a buggy fucking mess.”

ID: guzg972

I got it with PSplus. Else I probably wouldn’t have because seeing how expensive games are, I buy very few. The game is fun but I wouldn’t spend 70bucks for it.

ID: guzay12

Not only that, but Bend Studios doesn't exactly have the reputation that Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, or Insomniac have. The last game they released for consoles was in 2007. Since then they've done a few PSP/Vita titles and didn't release anything from 2012-2019. And the pitch for Days Gone wasn't exactly a home run either. To me it didn't have anywhere near the appeal of HZD or Ghost of Tsushima based on like what you'd see in an ad showcasing the world/art direction/etc.

5 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:24 ID: guyz04y

How can you love a game before you’ve purchased it? Surely he isn’t advocating that people buy games twice?

ID: guz1dqd

[removed]

ID: guz2p8o

Either that or go back to the days where nearly every game had a demo so you could try it before buying it.

ID: guzblr3

I doubt piracy is a big problem for consoles

ID: guz1b3o

In the article, when asked how someone would know they love a game before they buy it, he said they wouldn’t know but don’t complain about no sequel if people don’t support the game at launch

6 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:31 ID: guyzs9a

Wasn’t Days Gone not well received at first because of technical issues? Seems strange to release a game unpolished and be surprised when people wait to get it on sale, if at all.

It’s also just a bad idea nowadays to buy a game full price without waiting to see reception to it. Even with that you might get screwed like with Cyberpunk where they only let people review the version that ran relatively ok. Still can’t believe they got away with that move.

ID: guz5l80

He actually mentions in this interview that Metacritic scores are very important to Sony. I know some will get upset about that, but it's obvious why. Sony wants that Playstation Studios logo to mean something to people. Where when they see it there's certain quality that you get out of it. Maybe it won't be your favorite game, but you'll at least walk away feeling like you experienced a very well made game. So, a 71 isn't a bad score by any means, but it's also not at all what you'd expect from Playstation Studios.

They're working on a new IP now, and they'll have new studio leads since the others are no longer there. So, hopefully we can see them really knock it out the park with their first PS5 outing.

ID: guzgfwy

People are letting this Days Gone thing become more of a mess than it is.

We all know it underperformed, it's not as good as other Sony first parties, it's not like people got fired and the studio got disbanded. Let them keep at it and hopefully their next game will be better

ID: guzel9n

I still wonder why people pre-order a digital copy? I get that for discs as they might get out of stock - but why digital?

ID: gv018js

Pre-order bonuses.

7 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:07 ID: guz3zu9

Since developers like releasing buggy, broken games(Cyberpunk, Anthem etc.) I don't buy games at launch anymore. Why should I spend my hard earned money on something that doesn't work.

ID: guzj9of

Bingo. I bought anthem on sale for like $6, thinking surely it’s worth that at least. But damn I was still disappointed.

8 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:24 ID: guyyy6b

Well make a finished fucking game. Saying this to gaming industry as a whole.

ID: guz2wth

"Buy it at full price" is such a ridiculously tonedeaf statement in 2021.

9 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:27 ID: guyze90

That’s a weird thing to say bc I can’t love a game until I buy it, and there are very few I will give the benefit of the doubt to at full price.

Pay 60/70 bucks to find out if something sucks?

ID: guz18bv

Yeah exactly, the only games that have got full price from me are sequels where I really enjoyed the previous games and if it’s from a studio who have yet to make a game I haven’t liked.

10 : Anonymous2021/04/18 16:07 ID: guzbf2p

I'll pay full price when games are launched in a completed state, that isn't a buggy shit show.

Until then they'll get my money when the game is at least 65% off original price and like it.

ID: gv0bjcx

Or they are $20. For some reason $20 is an amount of money I am willing to gamble on a game I think I might like. $60 is not.

Also many full packaged games are like $100 now with all the planned DLC.

11 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:49 ID: guz97o6

Gimme a demo so I can fuckin' find out if I love it.

12 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:24 ID: guyz271

No, I don't think I will

13 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:45 ID: guz8omv

I would, if games nowadays got released in a fully, working, stable and complete state...

14 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:01 ID: guz3d5b

How do I know I'm gonna love a game before I play it?

ID: guzgufl

Not just that - how do I know if I'm going to like the final version of the game, if they don't release it all at once, add 15 DLCs and patch all the bugs within 2 years?

I should probably just pay full price, and then wait 2 years and pay full price again for the definitive final goty edition, which technically I thought I was buying the first time around.

ID: guzha4g

Just give in to the marketing campaign and open your wallet, if the game doesn't live up to the ad campaign that's your fault not theirs.

ID: guzj6nk

It's such a stupid point of view from this guy. They released a completely buggy mess of a fairly generic game at launch, and they even had the full marketing force as a sony exclusive first party title. But it's totally our fault we didn't support this mess out of the gate for something that had much more promise.

15 : Anonymous2021/04/18 16:36 ID: guzexy7

Days Gone was mediocre at launch and was riddled with issues. The dude wants us to blindly put faith in a new IP despite putting put a bug-riddled mess.

Sucker Punch launched Ghost of Tsushima, and is a new IP. Word about how good it is and high quality of it, and it spread like wildfire, causing loads of people to buy it at full price.

Sucker Punch put out good quality games and thus securing more fans willing to put in the money where their mouth is.

16 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:57 ID: guza3ip

lol well he just instantly lost a lot of love with that statement

17 : Anonymous2021/04/18 21:00 ID: gv0bwfh

What a horrible opinion.

Not everyone could afford full-priced video games. Not every game is good enough to be bought sight unseen. Not every game deserve the full sticker price (even AAA ones). Having to buy every dlc instead of waiting for "complete" edition is unreasonably more expensive. Having the comfort to release patches made video game development too relaxed and prone to shipping untested and straight out unfinished products.

Non of these points will be solved if players shove more money. On contrary, it will get worse.

18 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:21 ID: guz5qie

Counterpoint: "If you want me to buy a game at full price, make a better fucking game."

Blaming gamers for buying games on sale is a ridiculous attempt to shift blame for why the IP ultimately failed. This guy just sounds like a petulant child throwing a temper tantrum because he didn't get what he wanted.

Blame your publisher for shitty refund practices that don't allow us to try a game for a couple hours before we decide if we want to keep it. Blame your publisher for putting your game on sale 5 months after launch. Blame yourself for not launching a finished product that people couldn't wait to play. Don't blame the very people who are the only reason you have a job in the first place.

19 : Anonymous2021/04/18 15:45 ID: guz8nk6

If you love your work, ship when its fucking ready.

Sounds like that works in the opposite direction too!

20 : Anonymous2021/04/18 14:48 ID: guz1rof

Every time I think I'm just starting to like this game the voice actor for Deacon starts shouting his voice lines at the top of his lungs

ID: guzwpfl

Jesus Christ, not even just shouting, right? Like heavy breathing, grunting. Every read sounds so stupid. I know it’s supposed to be heavy and grim but I just laugh every time he talks. “Oh, uh, fuck! What happened here um freakers, goddammit I’ll show ya.” Then I find a mushroom or something. I actually like the game but maybe the most laughable main character so far.

has jokes about buying Nintendo games at full price so then the poor indie developers at Nintendo don't starve
