- The Yakuza Series Will Remain a Turn-Based RPG Series Going Forward
-
So Yakuza is now turn-based and Final Fantasy is now action?
Weird timeline we live in
ID: gxbwhebID: gxd692oThe best timeline.
ID: gxd0kwxSuper weird, make final fantasy Turn based again, starting with FFVI remake!
ID: gxevwvtPls no. Seems like they finally got action down.
ID: gxff0lkI can enjoy turn based, but FF7R's real time combat was implemented so damn good I want to see what else they can do.
-
Interesting I imagine judgment will be the brawler type title now
ID: gxbduadYeah, I think it is a good choice. I am looking forward to the next judgement. The trailer was very cool. I hope there is more detective style play in this one.
ID: gxc6wy0I love everything about Judgement except for the tailing missions. Hopefully they’ve revamped them if they’re still in the game.
ID: gxdnppfThose first person detective sections win the award for most nauseating camera perspective of all time. I don’t know what it is about those sections, but I had to take a 5 minute break every time I finished one.

As long as Ichiban is the protagonist, it should be. It's a lot of fun and is so in character for him.
If they do change characters again, they can either go back to the previous style or try something new. That's what I love about Yakuza, that studio is not afraid of being weird.
-
I want those musashi and Sakamoto Ryoma remakes please!!
ID: gxd95buKenzan and Ishin.
I'd also like a Dead Souls Remake, one of the main problems with it on ps3 was how badly it ran.
-
Should be the other way around. I played through Yakuza 0-6 and am having a hard time motivating myself to get through 7. Guess I'm switching over to Judgment then.
ID: gxc2yh5It is sad because I have played and finished every Yakuza game except (Ishin) and got stuck in a battle in 7 and gave up. I was really enjoying it for the most part and found the story very interesting. Though I am not prepared to grind and level up for many hours just to finish the game.
ID: gxcho9hThere's a noticeable difficulty spike for one fight against 2 characters popular in the other games. Other than that, it's not too bad even with fairly mainlining the storyline.
ID: gxd6sfbWas it the Majima fight
ID: gxdbf8sI prefer Judgment anyway, but it's a shame to drop Yakuza, I got 7 and was surprised I didn't mind the change in combat but then I just stopped playing, and I miss the old style. Wishful thinking but an option to choose fighting style would please everyone.
-
I was a big fan of the brawling style.
-
Well that’s disappointing.
-
I loved Y7 but it definitely had some problems, like half of the cast felt tacked on (especially one egregious example) compared to the development of the core squad, everyone having the same classes outside of their one unique one was a bummer to me and made them feel same-y, and the insane difficulty spikes for two specific bosses made no sense at all since the rest of the game is a complete cake walk
It had all the charm of a yakuza game and I loved it, but for the love of god PLEASE change the encounter rates in these games. You can have an encounter, take two steps, and have another encounter. It’s actually insane how much they want you to fight in these games when there’s so much other stuff to do
ID: gxb93ntThere's an item you can equip that turns off the random encounters. It makes it waaaay more enjoyable while doing the side-quests.
ID: gxc26aeI mean, within the lore the difficulty spike on those two bosses makes complete sense.
-
it's fine if they keep improving the RPG aspect of the game. Yakuza 7 is somewhat rough around the edges
-
Not too sure how to feel about this, I tried really hard to get into 7 but the combat just wasn't for me unfortunately
Aslong as the spin offs like judgement remain beat em ups ill stick with those
ID: gxb2u4xYeah, that's apparently what they're doing. They basically said Judgment will be their "action" game franchise now.
ID: gxdg5c3I don't understand why they made that decision. I would have expected it the other way around.
To me, Judgment is all about analysis. After all you're a detective. Wouldn't turn based make more sense in that franchise since thematically it's about analysing the situation and making the right choice using information at hand.
Meanwhile in Yakuza series, street brawls just inherently makes sense given the forceful methods of the Yakuza.
I'm not sure, maybe I'm off, but to me the reverse would make more sense.
That said I'm not complaining. I like both styles and I'm glad they're doing different stuff between the franchises.
-
Ouch. I don’t mind turn based but it’s not something I wanted in yakuza when I was used to beat em up for 7 games. Looks like judgement is the way to go forward
-
I've played almost every Yakuza game but skipped this one cos I hate turn based combat. Sad to hear this.
ID: gxckp6qThey do make it interesting though.
Some of the combat moves you learn are either amazing it hilarious. One of the characters learn "Jewelry Breaker" which is just a swift kick to the balls.
-
Thank god. I jumped in with Like a Dragon because of the switch and that was easily my GOTY 2020 and maybe one of my favorite games ever. I tried going back and playing the others but I absolutely hated the old combat.
So happy theyre sticking with turn based
ID: gxb38eeI've been playing the old ones and I don't think I'll miss the combat all that much, but I do think I'm going to miss Kazuma as the main character. Some seriously big shoes to fill.
ID: gxciejlI don't think I've ever seen anyone call Kiryu Kazuma.
ID: gxb5fazKasuga is an absolutely amazing protagonist so I don't think it'll be an issue.
ID: gxbmyewPlaying currently after playing Persona 5(my first JRPG). I'm really loving it. The story is a lot of fun, even if I'm skipping a bit of dialogue. And the side quests are god damn ridiculous.
ID: gxdkk1jI am about to take the same path as you my dude lol

I wish this were an april fool's joke

Is Ass Catchem in LaD?
-
Yuck, but I figured this would happen with how well LaD sold. I bought LaD and while I love the story and the Yokohama backdrop, goddamn I hate the combat. And this is coming from someone who loves the Trails series. I don’t hate turn based games, but I hate it for the Yakuza series. I’ll eventually force myself to finish LaD, but I’ll never pick up another Yakuza and probably watch the cutscenes on Twitch or YouTube.
-
Ahhh, not 100% sure how I feel about this.
I just platinumed LAD and I was thinking I'd love it if they made the next title turn based, but the one after back to original format, and then switched between them.
It's better to keep it different IMO, rather than committing to one style as it could get stale.
I still have judgement to play though, I've done every single other Yakuza except that (and saw the trailer for the new one yesterday) although I played the first couple hours, I bought it a few weeks before the Ps5 version got announced, and was quite upset that the Ps5 version wasn't a free or partial cost upgrade, and I don't really feel like playing the Ps4 version at 30, so I might wait for a deep deep sale on it.
-
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkk
-
Damn, I'm still currently playing Yakuza 7, but I haven't really been loving the combat. I think they did a good job with it not feeling as slow as some other turn based games, but it still feels super restricting compared to all the older ones.
At least we're still getting Judgement sequels, and it seems like they're gonna stick to the original beat-em-up style. Judgement was an incredible game and I'm really looking forward to the next one.
-
looks like i wont be playing any future mainline yakuza games anytime soon...
at least judgment is a thing!
-
Theres a lot I like about Yakuza 7 but it feels like such a slog with the battle system. I'd much prefer the classic gameplay
-
(Maybe) Unpopular opinion: Good. I liked Yakuza 0-6 but Like a Dragon is my favourite 2020 game and I wasn't even a fan of turn based games before it.
I don't know, it feels less repetitive and more satisfying. It also lets them add absurd attacks which are in line with the game's humour and makes the game funnier.
-
Unfortunately it’ll be a split on the fan base, half like beat em up and half like turn based. I much prefer the turn based as I finished like a dragon but struggled to finish kawami 1 even though I was enjoying the story.
Luckily yakuza 1-6 is basically the end of most character arcs so if you like the brawler style can start just playing judgement from now on.
-
🙁
-
Yakuza 7 is amazing and the turn based combat fits the story so well! Glad they’re making this change!
-
Ick. I hate turn based. Hopefully the new judgement game isnt
ID: gxb5w1cIt isn't. They confirmed Judgement will be the action based combat series from now on

Yes.
