- No Man's Sky: Expedition Two Patch Notes

I'd really love to see planets with a bit of variety...While there are tons of different planet types, they really just boil down to hot, cold, toxic, radioactive, dead, and flourishing...I think they could get really creative and have some planets that are partially paradise-like, but has radioactive ecology that renders x% of the planet hazardous for example. It really breaks the spell when every planet is essentially a homogeneous rock that is identical from one pole to the other.
ID: gyhizwhID: gyhllunIt’s not exactly the same as you’re saying, but some of the paradise planets do have things like superheated rain that can make life very difficult
ID: gyhlyalYeah - but that example is still a planet with a static biome type and hazard...I guess my original rant failed to mention that there is variety among planets of the same type, but yeah...None within a planet itself. Good call.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I really don't know what this game is about anymore. I played it back when it came out and even if it was flawed it was very unique and I quite enjoyed it. The scale of it all and the sense of loneliness.
Years later this game is a weird space Minecraft with a lot of content in it but it's not really more fun... it's just... more grind. Idk I'm happy for Hello Games and for people enjoying this game though.
ID: gyi0734The game is basically what you said, it's a spacey Minecraft with a bunch of content. Although the game has around three "main" quest lines and the last update was about a more focused experience with the expeditions, they really leaned on the "freedom" aspect of the game, where they just leave you to it and you set your own goals, like in Minecraft. Basically, you have a story to follow if you want to, but if you dont want to follow the story you can just fuck around.
For example, they added a buildable item that spawns a ball with physics, for no reason other than for you to play with, maybe make a Rocket League thing if you want, or just play normal soccer. They also added a MIDI mixer, that lets you create music and sync it up to lights in the game. Does it have any "purpose"? Not really, but it's there if you wanna have a bit of fun with it.
That's kinda what the game is summed up for me, "it's there if you want to do it, but you dont have to do it", and i really enjoy that.
ID: gyi36abYep, I get what you are saying. It's a more rewarding game now for sure. I just don't have the time for it anymore.

I haven't played NMS since it came out years ago, where I quickly lost interest.
How is NMS as of 2021?
ID: gygn38sIt has lots of content and can get repetitive but when playing with Friends you can have fun for a long time... Farming materials while listening to music is good when playing alone. The Story is there and is literally a tutorial to get you started. Base Building and a way to teleport to discovered systems got added as well. It is definitely a different game but a better and content filled one.
ID: gygo5h3Can you compare it starting a new game today to Subnautica in any way?
ID: gygovlaMind blowing in VR
ID: gyhmg5tShould I play it with a normal controller or move controllers?
ID: gygz6kgYeah only played it in VR. Bored of games like that flat but in VR did 100 hours and loved it all
ID: gygv9plThere’s a lot more to do, but nothing to do, if that makes sense. It can be veryyyyy boring, and most things (like base building) end up feeling pointless when the whole point of the game is to explore different planets.
There’s really no goal or reason to anything, other than looking at cool planets and aliens. The VR mode is really cool but that also gets boring after awhile.
ID: gygxxpxThat's what it seems like to me. I checked out a 2021 review and it basically looks like "shoot laser, collect stuff, travel"
ID: gygqbkaIt depends when you last played. If back in 2016-2017, it's basically a different game with lots more things to do. If you stopped after the release of NEXT, then it can be boiled down to "numerous smaller additions of content, QoL fixes, VR support, increased focus on multiplayer, new and more varied planet generation and seasons".
ID: gyh81q6It's a very different game.
Multiplayer is a thing. You and your friends can actually play with each other instead of being alone.
They added story to the game as well as lore.
Base building is now in the game.
Freighters are in the game. Which are basically mobile command ships that can house multiple ships of yours.
You can make terrestrial vehicles now and underwater bases and iirc submarines
They added a 3rd person view too which some people like more than the fps view the game had.
There is more but tbh between online and base building alone they took nms from like a 4 to a 7. The other content updates are great too.
ID: gyhj81qIf you were interested enough in it to buy it at launch, I'd say you'd enjoy it a lot more now. You might not get 1000 or even 100 hours out of it, but you might get a good 20 hours of fun at the very least.
And as it stands, NMS is a pretty unique experience.
ID: gyi0sscSea of thieves in space. Play with friends.

Started playing a few weeks ago with a friend on PC. I platinumed it back in the day and haven't touched it since.
Honestly, it's incredible now. It looks amazing, and I had that sense of wonder over and over again on my fresh start. It's all third person now too. I hit some really cool storms, the wildlife is a lot more interesting, and I landed on an "exotic" planet with a bunch of weirdly shaped blocks rolling around. The base building is a lot of fun too and pretty much optional. I guess you can swim now and go underwater too? And a living ship??? Insane. There is just so much new that my friend and I can't wait to discover.

Good job hello games. Proud of you. I’ll buy your next release. You’ve stood by your game unlike the cowards at bioware etc that abandon games

You also get variations on biomes like deep seas, waterworlds, mountainous, cavernous, etc. More extreme planets like volcanic and exotics. But while exotics are vastly different, of the different ones they have, each are pretty much the same as another. Like a hex planet is a hex planet no matter which hex planet you're on.
