Sure, the raytracing is pretty. But the horrible voice acting, stiff animations, awkward writing and pacing, and cringey fake Russian accents all combine into a very ... janky experience. I'm gonna stick it through to the end but, can somebody help me find the appeal here?
EDIT: Lots of people in the comments are saying "the Russian accents are from real Russian voice actors." Let's look at the game's English voice acting cast:
Artyom - Chris Parson, from Texas;
Anna - Anna Graves, from Tennessee;
Miller - Jamieson Price, from Florida;Seriously surprised how many people can't discern a forced, faked Russian accent from an American.
EDIT 2: A few more hours in now, and I've found that if you just take the voice acting and writing as an intentionally cheesy 80/90s action flick homage, then it's not so bad. Still can't quite get over the whole "great lighting on bad models/animation" thing though. So far, a solid 5/10 for me without considering the lighting yumminess, but the lighting prettiness alone could bump it up to a 6 or 6.5/10 for me.

I would not say that it GETS universal praise. I think there is a certain niche that likes that kind of game, and those people like this Metro better than some previous Metros.
-
I wasn't in to it until the after the train was captured, then I started to like this merry band of half drunk Russians on a quest for hope. I also like that one guy is called idiot, even in subtitles made me laugh
-
Can't you change it to Russian VO with subtitles? I agree the English with Russian accent thing is odd.
ID: h2eddjmID: h2edi89Most ppl only play thru a game once
ID: h2etakbAt launch, yes, and for the other Metro games very much. However the audio impaired subtitles work near flawlessly now. If you really want to you can use those and while I have only played through with them once, I never noticed a drop line.
-
There will never be a game that will appeal to literally everyone. That's basically the only explanation and that's totally fine.
ID: h2etp5zjust two threads before this someone said that Metro Exodus is one the best games ever
So yeah +1

Russian voice acting helps a lot for me. Also what’s helped me get into it is to not try to play it to much as a run and gun. Taking in the scenery, exploring every destroyed house and car. Definitely a game meant for headphones as well
ID: h2ez8esThat‘s my universal advice on almost any game unless it’s competitive or something. This makes games so cinematic and I enjoy them way more.
TLOU2 was SO good playing it like that, just like RDR2, GoW etc. I wish every dev team would have that in mind when they design the games 🙂
ID: h2fihybTLOU2 is amazing when played slow. You also end up catching hidden dialogue and moments you might miss when barreling through chapters. Also really enhances the environmental storytelling, lots of props that tell a story of the lost world.
ID: h2f1w6vYeah when I play games like that I usually search every nook and cranny too.
-
Those are legit real Russian accents though lol
ID: h2dzgfyI have a Russian friend and he lauds this series for the accurate representation of Russian speech/language, so, can confirm.
ID: h2f81s7I'm Russian - nooooo they are most certainly not.
I play the game exclusively in Russian, and the RUSSIAN voice acting is very good. But the English voice acting is absolutely terrible and immersion breaking.
ID: h2fcx46How do you play in Russian? I couldn't find the option.
-
I’m really enjoying it having no past knowledge. I’m a stealth / Dishonored lover tho. It has far exceeded my expectations for 20$
ID: h2euj87Its fantastic if you like creeping around and exploring at a nice slow pace.
-
Fake Russian accents? Weren't those accents actually from real Russians?
ID: h2f5dewThis is why the chernobyl TV series ignored accents, because people would complain no matter how well they faked the accents. A lot of people have only heard Russian accents from 90s action movies I guess.
ID: h2ftpoaIf you have a game or a movie set in a different country, where people speak their native language, should the dubbing have English with that language accent? Characters don't speak with an accent in their language, they speak natively.
-
Each to their own but I think it's great.
-
Idk I loved the game. It's a bit clunky and not as polished as other AAA games, but that's the normal jank you get from Eastern European devs. If you haven't played the first two, you'll obviously not be as invested into this game. I thought it was a weaker Metro entry since it was less like the first two, but still enjoyed my time exploring and playing through. It starts off slow-paced, but once it opens up, it's much nicer and lets you play at your own pace. Maybe it's not your type of game but I would still encourage you stick with it or play the previous games if you missed them.
-
Perhaps it's not the game for you. Just one of those things really . Personally I love the metro series and the accents are part of the charm.
-
Loved it!
-
Its kinda like Skyrim where theres like 5 voice actors playing 100s of people in the game. Still a great game imo. Worth a playthrough if only to experience the story.
-
Just because you are disappointed doesn’t mean any praise it gets is invalid. While it is pretty clunky, I have been really enjoying playing through it again. You shouldn’t force yourself to play it if you aren’t having fun though. That is the whole point of video games after all.
ID: h2e1hh5I guess he dont want to waste the money so he has to force himself on playing it(?)
I love the metro franchise btw, I think its pretty good, but not universally praised lol
ID: h2e9linSunk cost fallacy at it finest.
That money is gone. If he keeps playing it when he doesn't like it, now he's lost time in addition to money.
-
Im loving it mysedl, the atmosphere the game creates is amazing. I played through last light before starting it and think it’s well worth the price too - I paid £18 for it, so don’t see how there’s complaints when it’s that cheap.
-
I think it’s definitely the weakest of the three. I like forcing it into semi-open world just didn’t pay off when they could have used that time to refine the gameplay and focus on what their best at: linear and claustrophobic levels.
-
I tried to get into the earlier games and to be honest it kind of turned me off immediately and I didn't give it a full chance.
I'm sure there's great parts in there but I don't have time for games that rub me the wrong way.
-
This happens with every single new release on every gaming subreddit. Redditors praise it as the second coming of the lord Jesus Christ. 20 topics are made in the span of 2 days all with the same generic “X game changed my life” of hyperbole.
This is why people really need to look at multiple sources and not just Reddit. Not blaming you OP, but I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve thought “Meh” to a game that Reddit won’t stop circlejerking.
ID: h2eqwggHave you ever played le underrated indie gem witcherino 3?
ID: h2g1yfeHaven't heard anything negative about returnal (lack of saving doesn't count) or ratchet and clank. Demon souls was largely positive as I don't recall seeing posts about it, although there were comments. Miles Morales only has length going against it, and that was a complaint before the game even released, so doesn't fit your idea either.
-
I agree that it's definitely rough around the edges, the Metro series always has been. I think most people don't notice or don't care about those details.
The voice acting is something alright, and you can definitely tell the original script was written in Russian and then translated into English by someone who is not the best at translation. The game is overall sort of jank, but every now and then everything sort of aligns and you get some really awesome moments. Reminds me of Crysis in some ways!
Overall I'm a fan, just have to manage your expectations. There's also some charm in the jank in my opinion.
-
I think if you at least want to have some appreciation for the game, you should look into the devs. They’re a fairly small Ukrainian studio. Their office straight up looks like an in game location lol. They put a lot of effort on these and they face far more challenges than your average game studio.
-
Completely agree. The RT lighting is great, but the textures and models are still very last gen. There’s nothing special about the gameplay and those awkward, long winded talking scenes are just terrible.
It’s not even like the combat feels particularly great or anything. I really don’t get the hype.
ID: h2f14zdIt's a last gen game. What did you think they were going to go an re-do all the models for a two year old game?
ID: h2gd9p7The game looks great on PC. The graphics are downgraded so to a failure to utilize the next gen hardware with the new APIs despite porting it to PS5/xsx. I appreciate them doing more than nothing but it’s a half assed port for next gen consoles despite totally redesigning the levels from the ground up. I find it strange they did so much in some ways to achieve such a mediocre outcome. The lighting is pretty good (although far from perfect), but the lack of ssd support, multi threading, and who knows what other limitations have left the graphics as pretty bad. The textures are mindboggling in how bad they are at times. Resolution drops below 1080P. Not great outcome to showcase their RT.

Yeah, same problem, add to that the bad enemy AI, all of this makes me regret listening to the numerous posts/comments on this subreddit praising the game, there should be more upvoted posts/comments with negative criticisms of the game to prevent some people from making the same mistake and thinking its the perfect gem much of this subreddit makes it out to be, but most of those get downvoted to all hell.
I think posts praising or legitimately criticizing games should have no upvote/downvote bars, that way the top comments on a post won't be all the same praises said over and over again, and you would get mixed comments, unless the game is truly special.
Also, changing to Russian VA doesn't subtitle the people talking to each other in the background, so you lose out on much of the world building...
-
Exodus is a direct sequel to Metro Last Light which is a sequel to Metro 2033. The first two titles will help build the lore and connections to the characters, even the weird voice acting in Exodus.
-
Thats how I felt after buying the old Metro double pack. Got maybe 2/3 of the way through and just lost interest in what felt like a C tier game.
-
Well, i bought it in 2019 and i'm starting the second playtrough in PS5 and i still think i'ts a masterpiece. I consider myself someone who looks the graphics and that stuff first than story, etc. The animations can be bad sometimes and the gameplay can be so bad (the acceleration of the camera, for ex). But that's not all that matters. People thinks that Fallout 4 is a masterpiece and when a tried it i almost ripped off my eyes
-
huh
maybe you weren't having a good day.
-
Lol literally more than half of the problems you have with the game is because you are not playing in VO.
"To cast pearls before the swine"
-
who cares if you don't like a game other people like. why does something like this need its own thread.

From everything I read, people recommend playing with English voices for the first playthrough, because the subtitles don't convey all the nuances of what is being said -- and when there's multiple people talking, it can only show the subs for one person.
By all means, turn on Russian voices for the 2nd and subsequent playthrough.
[Update] the info above seems to be outdated, it looks like multiple simultaneous speakers isn't a problem for subtitles anymore. Go ahead and select the Russian voices, I'm going to do the same.
