ID: h3k182xIt runs at a target framerate of 40 which is a multiple of 120hz (the refresh rate), this is done so if the framerate isn't consistent they can show a frame for more/less refreshes instead of screen tearing or losing a whole frame in cases where vsync is on and the framerate = the refresh rate. Basically they're brute forcing the variable refresh rate feature of Xbox series X/S since Sony is taking too long to do it in the firmware

Holy shit Fidelity feels completely different. Try it if you have a 120 Hz-compatible TV.
Remember to go to your PS5's video settings and set "Enable 120 Hz Output" to "Automatic."
Then go in Rift Apart, there is a new 120 Hz compatibility setting under "Visuals."
Does anyone else feel like Performance RT feels better too or just me? For sure Fidelity no longer looks like a slideshow and feels slightly unresponsive...
ID: h3lpgh0It's probably largely placebo, but the 60fps modes will have reduced input lag now (8ms). So not smoother, but yeah slightly more responsive!

Playing on an LG CX and to be able to see all of the particle effects and density without compromise and at a noticably smoother framerate is great. This was always the main drawback with performance modes for me. It's damn beautiful now and hopefully they can do the same with miles morales.

Great idea with using 40-45 fps as an in between of 30 and 60. This is could be a good alternative way moving forward.

45 will not work nicely until VRR is enabled, but in future, yes it could be anything between 30 - 60.
ID: h3mbqanNo, that’s not why this works so well. The only reason this works AND feels smoother is because of the 120hz output. 40 divides evenly into 120 so you get a smooth output that makes gameplay feel nicer. If you did this without enabling the 120hz refresh rate it would feel noticeably worse than a stable 30.
Giving the option doesn’t hurt, but if a game has to choose between 30 FPS and 40 at 60hz output it should ALWAYS be 30 to provide the smoothest experience.
This all changes when they enable VRR for supported displays on the PS5.

I just tested this out on my 120 HZ TV. Fidelity mode at 40fps is noticablely smoother than it was at 30. The "slide show" effect is basically gone.
This is the best way to play now in my opinion for those who can, considering you get all the visual benefits of the fidelity mode and close to the smoothness of the performance modes.
ID: h3kbfb5oh man, i just started using RT 60..but i'll have to check this out. the only question i have is that PS5 outputs 60 in 4:4:4 but can only do 120 at 4:2:2...wonder if that makes any noticable difference (unlikely?). Im sure DF will make a video fast, Jon has been begging for a 40fps mode in games.
ID: h3kgztl4:4:4 and 4:2:2 differences are basically only noticeable when viewing very small text elements which most games and video content don't have. You'd notice it when, say, browsing reddit.

But maybe it would still be better than locked 30.
ID: h3kfjyyThat is very likely once PS5 has VRR support. However if your display has VRR support, it most likely already has a 120Hz mode and can use the 40fps option in the game right now. 60Hz displays without VRR will always be locked to 30fps I would imagine.

I just tried it. ABSOLUTELY GAME CHANGING! This looks and plays incredibly on my LGC9. Insomniac is now leading the industry with temperol injection and now this 40fps through 120hz. I would love to see a game run at 1440p temperol injection at 40fps. The visuals would be absolutely insane because you would be saving on resolution and frame rate but still getting the best of both worlds.
ID: h3mdsdjIt looks and feels like the perfect compromise doesn’t it? Just fast enough to give you that “grounded in the world” feeling that you only usually get from 60fps or higher, with all the VFX enabled.

120 fps on 120hz would look like this: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12...
Each refresh receives a new frame.
40 fps on 120hz would look like this: 1 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 3 4 4 4....
ID: h3kbxkzits 40fps but with two extra duplicate frames (three identical frames in a row)...so 40x3 =120. this is how 30fps works on 60hz displays, its doubling the frame each time since tvs cannot run at 30hz.
40 is interesting cause its not common, but with 120hz you can get 10 more fps without causing stuttering (which happens if the frames cannot be evenly divided by the hz). Digital Foundry has been asking for this as an option for a while.
ID: h3kr51f120hz refers to the TV's display. Fps refers to the actual framrate of the game. If you have a 120hz display, it doesn't mean that the games are running at 120fps. In this case, having a 120hz TV display with a game running at 40fps will lead to a bit smoother experience with less input lag.

Happy to see a developer finally try this out, a few years ago I played Forza Horizon 3 on my PC at 1080p40fps as I couldn't get it to run at 60fps on my machine and my TV supported 1080p120. The uplift from 30fps was very noticeable and I enjoyed the game much more at 40fps.
Now obviously VRR is sort of the holy grail for this though unless devs have an artistic vision where framerates don't fluctuate (I could see a dev choosing to cap the frame rate in VRR mode to prevent crazy swings in frame rate like when looking at a wall and mostly rely on VRR to make frame drops not as big of a deal). I'm not sure how popular a fixed 40fps will actually be especially because any TV that supports 4K120 will very likely support VRR and for older sets like mine that can do 1080p120 you're probably just going to go for 1080p60 as you're likely leaving performance on the table at 1080p40.
The other plus side of targeting 40fps is the gap between "fidelity" and "performance" modes is only 50% instead of 100%, which I imagine makes it easier on the devs to scale between the modes (though of course going for 40 instead of 30 means they need to scale back a bit in places, but that should pay dividends in creating a 60fps mode)

I'll give it a shot. Honestly, the game just looks too good already. It's really hard to already keep track of every little effect and pixel even with performance RT. But it will be fun just to see what differences I can spot.

Very happy to see this. Converse so my initial belief, I much prefer Fidelity over Performance in this game, but I had wished for higher frame rate.
I owe a 120hz TV so this gold for me! 33(.333333)% increase to frame rate <3

So before
Fidelity Mode - 30fps
After update
Enable new 120 hz display mode in settings
And then Fidelity Mode - 40fps
Perfect frame times so it’s much smoother without needing to be 60fps
Gameplay - its so much smoother and better now
