- Doom Eternal Next-Gen Upgrade: PS5 vs Xbox Series X/ Series S - All Modes Tested

TL;DW?
ID: h4dy88vID: h4dyx5kID TECH 7 is magic

TLDR:
Balanced mode: XSX & PS5 is dynamic 4k hitting the target most of the time while being locked to 60fps with one or two frame hitches at checkpoints, XSS is dynamic 1440p locked to 60fps with the same hitches at checkpoints
Raytracing mode: dynamic 1800p for XSX and PS5 with resolution being around 70% most of the time while being locked to 60fps, XSS doesn't have a raytracing mode probably due to smaller memory
120 mode: dynamic 1800 for XSX and 1520p for PS5 with the PS5 rarely dipping to 900p, for the XSS it's dynamic 1080p with the lowest being slightly above 720p, performance wise all three run at a perfect 120fps
Load times: the PS5 is twice as fast as the XSX/S 4 seconds vs 8 seconds
Note: the xbox consoles use VRS which affects the graphics a little bit but it's only noticeable when you zoom at 400%
ID: h4e7nr4TLDR the TLDW
ID: h4ef5myXbox = higher resolution
PS5 = faster loading times

The RT mode is incredible. Wish I had a better TV so I could try 120fps though.
ID: h4e8rf9120fps is pure joy.

I'm having a blast replaying this on the PS5. It looks and feels amazing, I love using the new Ray-tracing ballista gun skin. And there's certain areas which show off the ray tracing really well, like when you get a corridor of glass window panes! Light and reflections are bouncing everywhere. The adaptive triggers are a nice bonus, but in a game like this where its kinda competitive I admit I have turned them off for now.
-
Cheers to y’all who make the TLDWs

Really wanna play this shit. But can’t be arsed to start all over again. I don’t have time to play through it all again. Game looks great though
-
If you own DOOM Eternal on PS4 (physical) and pop it into your PS5 it will update with all these PS5 goodies?
ID: h4eyhirYes, I did this day one

1800P DRS @ 60/120 Xbox series X both raytracing and 120hz modes
1800p DRS @ 60 on ps5 in ray tracing mode
1584P DRS @ 120 on ps5 in 120hz mode
In balanced mode both consoles target native 4k with DRS and hold 60
Rock solid framerates on all three machines
Ps5 loads twice as quick but its only a matter of 4 seconds vs 8 seconds
Xbox series consoles use variable rate shading which helps the resolution as well as the slightly beefier GPU

No save transfers is just bullshit, I know Sony has some prehistoric system in place for that but pretty much every other game has no issue with it. I sold off my physical copy after I beat it at launch and I would buy the deluxe edition right now to play the DLCs but no way I'm starting from scratch. Their loss I guess.

I’ve been playing at 120. The input delay (or lack thereof) is sublime. I can’t see the difference in the ray tracing modes so I’m sticking with 120. It’s so clean and smooth. Crank that music and I’m almost overwhelmed with all of the action on the screen. Have to take a break after a good session. Couldn’t ask for more. Shame it could potentially be the last Doom on PS. Bethesda don’t do that to us! Either way, this game is a masterpiece in its genre. Feels like it’ll stand the test of time.
ID: h4e6ps1I mean with the DLC wrapping up the story arc, it could be the last Doom for awhile.
I'm worried I won't get Wolfenstein 3 on PS5, assuming that game ever does become a reality.

Nah they need Doom titles exclusive for Xbox as that’s a major selling point, wouldn’t be surprised if they’re already doing pre production on next Doom right now
ID: h4eatafDoubt they'll be touching doom for a while judging by the DLC. rumour has it right now ID are working with machine games on a Quake reboot.
ID: h4e4errReplace that could with will . It's Spencer's decision now and he's only concerned with growing that game pass of his . Note: I have no dog in this race, just stating the obvious .
ID: h4e6tptNot sure why I got downvotes. But regardless not happy about the strategy of buying up beloved series and yanking them off platforms. It may reflect the maturity of the industry but it’s a very monopolistic move.
-
ID Software has done brilliant optimization on all platforms. All 3 modes play wonderfully. Slightly lower res on PS5 but rock solid framerate.
-
Interesting that they only mentioned the lowest bound resolution of PS5 but didn't mention it about Series X. I'm just curious to know what resolution does Series X drops lowest during 120fps mode.

You can’t carry over saves to the new patch on PS5 and it’s a ball-ache to upgrade.
ID: h4ejlkoBall ache to upgrade??? I just put my ps4 disk in, and downloaded the ps5 upgrade from the store. The game actually doesn't copy the PS4 version to your ps5 either, which is actually pretty great, it's like it knows your playing on a PS5 so doesn't bother installing the ps4 version.
ID: h4em4mxI totally get that there the different SKUs mean that the saves can't be opened in different titles straightforwardly on the console itself, but I do think it's weird that Sony hasn't implemented their own cloud-based solution for upgraded titles so that devs don't have to come up with bespoke solutions for individual titles.
Obviously it's expensive and complex, and will be basically irrelevant in 6 months or so for existing PS5 owners as most legacy titles will presumably have had their upgrades by then, but it will still affect people newly upgrading from PS4 for the next couple of years. I dunno. Do we think that Sony didn't expect cross-gen upgrades to be "a thing" till late in the day? I totally get that Microsoft had more incentives to get this right as BC is important to Game Pass, and they relied on upgrades more due to a slow start with new titles etc.

How come the saves dont work from ps4 to ps5 but they do across the xbox gens? Would have thought he file formats were the same :-/

Nearly the same performance between PS5 and XSX. XSX gets higher resolution most of the time when they drop resolution. Both locked to their FPS targets 99% of the time. PS5 loads in half the time as XSX.
