- AMD's latest RDNA2 drivers reduce YouTube 4K 60FPS playback power consumption - VideoCardz.com

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
ID: h8x5290ID: h8x95pkwhy not change the CPU cooler? Vetroo V5 is decent, for instance.
ID: h8xb2p0rx580 won't last that long unless you're not into gaming! wish you the best mate! I'm in a similar situation
ID: h8xzm9qMy 6700 XT is drawing only 7 watts with two displays attached.
-
Happy that fortunate people are benefiting
ID: h8xdczoThere are dozens of us!
-
Great! Now how about not running memory at max clock when there are multiple monitors connected? My card is drawing 30W doing nothing when it could go down to like 5W...
ID: h8x3tv1Mine is drawing that much with a single 144hz 1080p.
ID: h8x4uh9Are you on linux too? I did some testing and Windows driver actually gears down even with double 144 Hz 1080p displays of double 60 Hz 1440p.
ID: h8y5hwnMonitor issue, not driver issue. Can sometimes be fixed with CRU.

I remember not too long ago power consumption was a big factor in buying a GPU, and now the meta is “who cares about power usage” lmfao.
ID: h8yqfl2Except when running atypical monitor configs, then suddenly everyone gets upset over 20W of extra usage.

Only RDNA2?
ID: h8wvzzxIf those videos are using the AV1 codec only RDNA2 has hardware decoding.
ID: h8x3e3kA lot of Videos do, and the Benchmark sites probably stick to popular ones
At the same time it seems odd: YouTube would likely stick to VP9 if hardware support for AV1 is missing, and it is hard to explain why VP9 hardware decoding should consume much more powerThe authors of that article should properly check their test environment and make sure they are actually streaming the same video, I think as it is written right now the data is entirely worthless
ID: h8x3xocIt has nothing to do with AV1. It's just power management issue.

idk but does the iGPU of the 4800H have an RDNA2 Architecture?
ID: h8wybj5No. All Ryzen APUs released thus far have Vega iGPUs. This includes the 4000 and 5000 series.
The Steam Deck will be first device powered by an APU with an RDNA2 iGPU.
ID: h8x4phdYou could say ps5 and both new Xbox are powered by amd apus
ID: h8x5cynDoesn't the current consoles have RDNA?
ID: h8wylmtCool, btw is there a way to benchmark the iGPU? My lappy has optimus and if i ever start a bench the gtx 1660ti takes over.
ID: h8wyaluNo. Its iGPU of 4800H is Vega.
ID: h8wyhogDamn.
And on OC'ing it to +100 or +200mhz didnt make a performance difference for some reason lol
ID: h8wyv58No. The 4800H uses Vega. The next generation of APUs, Rembrandt will be the first APUs to receive RDNA2.
ID: h8x2hj5Steamdeck with Van Gogh is set to release this Dec, so I don't think Rembrandt would be the first APU to have a RDNA2-based iGPU.
ID: h8x7q0zI was hoping AMD would integrate RDNA2 graphics in 5000 series APUs. 🙁

Was the power consumption the reason for the driver timeouts?

does the rdna1 card 5700 xt still crash when watching youtube?
ID: h8wv7p3I have a 5700XT and never had any crash watching youtube videos.
ID: h8wxoxlNeither have I.
ID: h8x9qaysounds like defective hardware or system instability
ID: h8xtvh7According to your post history, you seem to own every AMD GPU ever created. You need to stop buying from the flea market.
No problems with my 5700XT, excellent card.
ID: h8y3p42This sounds made up af..
No High Powered GPU is going to crash from just using >200mhz(overkill) to play a pre-recorded video stream in h.264 or VP9.
ID: h8y4ez6The kind of trash AMD produce does.

Can they play VP9 at 8K 60 yet?

Yes. My pc heats up my room when gaming. My gpu has a mild overclock on it that keeps it around 75-78c while gaming so I can have max clocks without throttling. My room is in our basement and has no windows, so I have nothing to open and nothing to put a portable ac unit into. I have an exhaust fan installed that is rated for 30cfm more than the room requires, but it's not enough. I'm looking into an air exchanger, but those are very pricey and I still have to save for a new gpu. Lol

I have same processor, rx580 and running 3200cl16. Just picked up my system too. I'm going to have to wait a minimum of 5 years to afford my next video card. I hope nothing happens to any other part of my system. Especially since I went pre-built and ended up with a terrible cpu cooler.
