AMD RX 490 Launching in 2021 - Why Dual Polaris wasn’t released until NOW!
2 : Anonymous2021/08/14 02:56 ID: h8v7wqz

i remember now the rumors back in 2016 of dual Polaris card called RX490

it wont be great for gaming (shitty support for Crossfire is the main reason, even in 2016)

ID: h8v9toz

There supposedly was a dual polaris card for Macs.

As for crossfire, this is solely an artificial software limitation. Google Lucid Hydra, and you will see what I mean. Dual GPU support has been artificially limited by drivers, because manufacturers did not want dual GPUs to outperform the high end, or to ever be a long term solution. The proof of them not wanting it viable long term already exists via hindsight. Both companies dropped support, when it was never necessary to work via "game profiles". 3dfx never needed "game profiles", and that's not how Lucid Hydra worked either. In fact, existing mGPU technology can work without driver support, but relies on the game providing support directly through the API. The simple solution to this is to bypass game support, and make the API do it automatically, but that doesn't sell high end cards.

AMD's future GPU hardware will be multi chiplet based though, so there will indeed be work done on this at that point. The question then is, whether or not it gets backported to multi-gpu. Probably not on windows, much like ReBar only works on older AMD cards through linux.

Which is good enough for me at that point. If linux starts supporting fully automatic mGPU, I will switch and not look back, as artificial windows limitations are getting too tiresome to tolerate.

Google Lucid Hydra, and you will see what I mean

This is what Wikipedia has to say:

SweClockers.com, when testing the MSI Big Bang Fusion which features Hydra 200, gave it very poor ratings citing the following: Poor drivers, poor game support, small if any performance gain over a single video card, graphical artifacts, unstable gameplay and a high price tag

Sure seems like a winner.

3dfx never needed "game profiles", and that's not how Lucid Hydra worked either

3dfx SLI worked by having GPUs alternate which lines of pixels they drew for a given frame. This worked with OK scaling until games started using screen-space effects, at which point the cross-GPU traffic caused it to stop working. 3dfx went bust before game engines got complex enough for this to really be a thing though.

Then vendors (basically only nvidia and ATI at this point) switched to alternate frame rendering to get around this problem. Nvidia having purchased 3dfx's corpse, repurposed the SLI branding despite its acronym no longer making sense.

AFR scaled better than (3dfx's) SLI did, but had issues with frame pacing and input lag. Then game engines started using temporal data, and AFR stopped working due to inter-GPU traffic, just like SLI failed due to screen space effects being added.

Now we're in the current situation where multi-GPU is basically dead, and not at all for "artificial" reasons. Unless of course you want game rendering to go back to dx8/shader model 1.0 complexity.

In fact, existing mGPU technology can work without driver support, but relies on the game providing support directly through the API

And there's a reason nobody does this.

AMD's future GPU hardware will be multi chiplet based though

And unlike existing solutions - and why it has taken this long to get to GPU chiplets - there will be high bandwidth, low latency links between each chiplet, to make the cross-chiplet communication viable (and even abstracted from developers) where it isn't over pcie.

MCM GPUs are the next gen implementation of "Dual GPU"

have as many Graphics core dies as you want, with scheduling that is transparent to the OS

Honestly feels like half the commenters didn't watch the video. Sapphire is releasing a dual Polaris card for miners. Based on the R&D required, this was likely designed when Polaris was new with AMD's involvement. But multi gpus have issues with scaling, power and cost, and wouldn't have made sense based on Vega's initial schedule (which got significantly delayed). This would have likely been the original RX 490, based on rumors at the time.

Now that component shortages are coming down, it makes sense to get rid of these older Polaris dies as mining cards, which don't have the same multi gpu performance, size and cost concerns. So downclocked dual RX 570s with shared vram (which is pretty expensive atm), on a large and cheap PCB, for an efficient mining card.

Thanks a lot for the lt;dr.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if even 10% watched the video. I certainly didn't, and looked for a clarifying comment (found yours). Videos tend to be a waste of 10 minutes for something that could be read in text in a few seconds.

ID: h8woegq

well you're putting alot of stock into a random comment instead of verifying the information for your self.

Crypto mining should totally be banned from the face of the earth. But
as with war, disease and famine, I guess it ain't happening any time
soon...

ID: h8weu64

My beef with mining is that it's just so wasteful. All the energy wasted on make-work that adds no real value.

I wish the original BTC had instead incorporated work from Folding or SETI. If it did then crypto mining wouldn't just be laundering CNY into BTC, but doing useful work as well.

Shoutouts to Gridcoin.

ID: h8wjosv

I'm sure when the government cracks down on crypto the first talking point will be about the "environmental concerns" of mining or its association with black market trading all the while attempting to prop up their inflated fiat.

The CCP is already cracking down on BTC/Crypto and their literally the biggest polluters in the world, I fully expect the Biden administration to follow suit and target Crypto before the midterms.

Amen to that

ID: h8w20lr

Indeed, make them do it at Lagrange points facing the Sun on penalty of war, disease, and famine!

This is the most accurate PC news channel on YouTube right now.

ID: h8vjdat

His big navi leak is why I keep watching him. He said it will reach 3080 while most people said they wont beat the 3070

ID: h8uv82x

I mean the analysis in this video is pretty good

ID: h8w1h6b

Wait no /s at the end?

ID: h8v8rdv

He is among the worst, and gives the entire PC hardware community a bad name. The fact that his content gets upvoted here still is embarrassing

ID: h8vb23d

Care to elaborate?

Never heard of em.

ID: h8w8s5q

It's obvious he is being sarcastic, who in their right mind would believe AMD is releasing a RX 490 now.

6 : Anonymous2021/08/14 08:02 ID: h8vzivt

I got a stupid question : would amd rerelease polaris ?

With gddr6 an the new 12nm node from GF ? It wouldn’t be better perf but cheap to make and cooler than the rx 570/80… heck give it only 6gb on ram and flood the market when you can with it

Lower budget gamer don’t need ray tracing (or they could do the sale with vega)

ID: h8w65w5

Sapphire is the one who released this card. MLID's theory is that this card uses the PCB designed for what would be released as the RX 490 back in 2016 and he bases it on the fact that there was a leak about Sapphire working on a dual GPU Polaris card back in 2016.

ID: h8w8gbn

I understood that part however i wonder if it doesn’t make sense for amd to replace lower end navi with a slightly updated polaris

For budget gamers 1080p still is the target and the rx 570 still get the jobs done on my end

7 : Anonymous2021/08/14 09:13 ID: h8w4hvx

AMD isn't releasing this.

Guarantee this is just cobbled together from spare parts by an oem to sell to miners

8 : Anonymous2021/08/14 11:34 ID: h8wei3w

Helps AMD meet the WSA with GF as well

9 : Anonymous2021/08/14 09:07 ID: h8w431j

I seriously don't know why are people hating so damn much on Tom MLID, I don't know why his smugness is a care for people, if he delivers correct information and good news I couldn't care less if he is smug or not. he got a point and is right most of the time, I watch his videos and podcasts(if you wanna say fanboy, I watch his video on YT Vanced app that blocks ads, skipps sponsors, Outro intro and such, he said RX 6800 XT when it was coming out that is should be 3080 performance or like 10-15% better in some cases and it was like that when others were saying it is gonna get close to 3080 but not same performance and Huh who was right? I like his content cause he doesn't bullshit and get biased about anything company. If AMD did something shit slander them for it, Nvidia did something shit same goes for any other Intel etc. And honestly I doubt any of the other PC Tech channels besides GN, Hardware Unbox, Rtings(well mostly for reviews) make an effort to invite a guest from other industries to give insight every week or every other week.

ID: h8wa4sx

Yep, this is what people don't realize. He's smug when he's confident. Get over it. He's actually making an effort to bring in people from the industry who really knows what they're walking about. This is such an underdeveloped and untapped field that's in dire need of exposure. I want more info directly from the people that work there. Enough with all the secrecy bs and being scared of saying anything to anyone. It's boring:P.

ID: h8wc107

You are totally right. This is why I like to watch and listen to him. You get to hear differenr kind of people's who work there, their opinions on stuff and such. Enough with secret shit behind the door. We need a bit of transparent thinking.

10 : Anonymous2021/08/14 04:45 ID: h8vjh3p

Seems rather late for an RX 490 (dual RX 480) since even if it scaled well it would still be trounced by most RDNA2 GPUs. I am not even sure if this is cost effective neither.

ID: h8vyfkx

Seems awkward to put out new gfx 8 architecture cards when they EOL'd some with driver support. Tonga and Fiji are gfx8 and so is polaris. More to the point that marketing and upper management make some arcane decisions.

ID: h8y2hre

We didn't end Polaris support though - the cut was between Polaris and older cards.

ID: h8wqo8d

To be frank it's too soon to end support for Polaris tbh, heck, I think it's too soon to end support for Fiji since performance-wise an R9 290/390 is totally viable (I mean yes, the R9 280/X and HD 7970 is also viable by that logic but that's gonna be integrated graphics territory soon anyways thanks to AMD implementing RDNA2 in it's APUs and Intel improving their GPU tech). Plus Polaris isn't even that old. Usually driver support is less of an issue on Linux though in terms of longevity fortunately for me. Even Kaby-Lake-G is still supported even though it's EOL on Windows very quickly.

As for this GPU it could still be good for compute.

ID: h8vz3mc

I guess they can use an older manufacturing node and not compete with other products?

ID: h8x9zcv

Are you talking about the mining card in the video? I think gaming expectations for mining-specific cards need to be tempered accordingly.

11 : Anonymous2021/08/14 05:57 ID: h8vpx4z

I mean the Radeon Pro Duo did exist. Should be easy enough and cheap to build a gaming version of that.

ID: h8w5x6d

The issue isn't with building a dual GPU Polaris card, the issue is with the fact that by 2016 when this card would have come out support for multi GPU was rapidly disappearing with Nvidia going as far as to end support for 3 and 4-way SLI.

Multi GPU was a great idea until you realize that it required game devs to implement it and number of PC gamers with more than one graphics card was never high enough to make it worth it.

ID: h8wjvsx

Multi-GPU is dead. Anything that requires per-game/engine support (e.g. D3D12 multi-GPU) is dead.

The future is multiple GPU chiplets on one package, which doesn't need per-game/engine support to work. RDNA3 is supposedly 2x GPU chiplets without an I/O die (like Zen/Zen+), which should allow performance to be roughly doubled assuming latency isn't an issue.

ID: h8x9g4j

This card isn't for gamers, it's supposed to be for miners. If you watch the video, MLID explains that, and I think also shows an image of it with only one display output.
Very much a mining only card, on a node that doesn't compete supply wise with RDNA 2. (Maybe other components might compete on supply though)

12 : Anonymous2021/08/14 02:15 ID: h8v2y64

Anything that helps reduce supply problems is a good product. If gamers buy it, maybe more work will be done on mGPU, which is pretty much a joke with game specific support, when it should be implemented more like Lucid's Hydra.

Also, future AMD cards will be chiplet design like Ryzen, so there will most definitely be a push into mGPU. The question is, if AMD keeps mGPU optimization walled off to their chiplet cards, which if they do, if linux will support automatic mGPU on regular hardware that isn't chiplet.

Just think of all the performance sitting unused in Laptops that have dual graphics, which aren't being used due to API limitations. Fix mGPU to work like Hydra, and every single Laptop will be a linux gaming beast.

I honestly don't understand how shortsighted people have been to see Lucid Hydra, and not realize we could have had free performance. Supporting automatic mGPU would be a killer app for linux that would instantly switch every laptop gamer off windows. It's stupid not to do it, yet nobody realized the potential, and will most likely wait for GPU chiplets to force software optimization.

ID: h8w5hdo

If gamers buy it, maybe more work will be done on mGPU [...]

Some gamers buying an overpriced dual RX 570 card made out of stockpiled Polaris 20 dies and a PCB for a dual GPU card that was never released won't change the fact that PC gamers with more than one graphics card in their rig are a tiny part of the market making it not financially viable to include mGPU support in games when many game devs already don't have enough time to even finish the game by the time it's supposed to release.

Also, future AMD cards will be chiplet design like Ryzen, so there will most definitely be a push into mGPU.

Unlikely. The way I understand it the entire idea behind the MCM approach for future GPUs will be for a GPU made out of multiple modules to be presented to the OS as a single GPU in the same way that Zen 2/3 CPUs with multiple chiplets are presented as one 12/16 core CPU instead of two 6/8 core CPUs.

ID: h8wdkgx

presented to the OS as a single GPU

Which is what Lucid Hydra already did. Crossfire isn't some thing people can say doesn't exist. What doesn't exist is an API that presents dual GPUs as a single GPU. Even if nobody makes this API now, it will exist after AMD releases the open source to linux, and developers can port that code to SLI/Crossfire.

It's not a question of if, but when.

13 : Anonymous2021/08/14 01:47 ID: h8uzhsf

i swear to damn lord i didn't know about this card

like legit i knew for 12 lightning 780ti's

but for this damn i didn't,because it was not covered much at all

14 : Anonymous2021/08/14 07:05 ID: h8vvaf8

Is that really real? Holy crap now it's coming?
