Hijacking the top comment to say that if you're Brazilian please use a cash back service. I get 5 to 10% on purchases. I used to use meliuz but I now use inter as their customer. That means I ended up paying 3800 reais when I bought the digital version a couple of months ago.

Edit:

is what I use, and I have an account in the bank.

Nubank tem isso?

To put into context the cost of the console in Brazil:

The median income for working class families in Brazil is around R$2500 (Not a national average as high income individuals bring that number much higher).

Assuming a 10 hour work day, that averages to ~ R$8 per hour.

To afford a PS5 it would still take OVER 549 hours of labor. Not accounting for bills, taxes, food, etc.

For comparison, the (national) average US worker will take 40 hours to earn enough to buy a PS5. Still not factoring in anything else.

If you take the national average (R$8560) it is around 162 hours, which is still insane.

Now it only costs 4 times the monthly minimum wage

ID: h9f3ind

You can blame the government for having a 300% import tax for foreign made goods. Although I guess it's only like 280% since this article is about a reduction.

ID: h9fngpz

Brazilian import tax is legally capped at 60% if I'm not mistaken. However other taxes (such as the one that was just reduced) bump the console total tax up to 70% I believe.

ID: h9g0n3u

It wouldn’t cost that price if it was 300%. It would be way more. If there’s 300% import tax on that price then Sony is basically taking a huge loss on every system sold.

The west is privileged compared to the east and global south in regards to the affordability of luxury goods.

You don't price video game consoles based on the local minimum wage. Sony is not a charity.

ID: h9fioid

In the US it costs 1,5 week of minimum wage, versus 4 months in Brazil, surely you can see the disparity.

ID: h9fg6xx

They also don’t make any money on console sales. If anything consoles should be as affordable as possible so they can make money selling games.

By Grabthar's Hammer, what a savings

5 : Anonymous2021/08/18 15:45 ID: h9f527r

Guess, that's the result of those tax changes or something.

6 : Anonymous2021/08/18 15:08 ID: h9f08gm

How much does the master system go for these days?

ID: h9ffa08

Two bananas, one açaí and a capivara

ID: h9g8yxh

I'm curious, is a factory sealed Master System from Brazil the same one we got here in the eighties? Are they actually just still manufacturing them? Because if that's the case I'd probably buy one just to have a less aged piece of hardware. If it's different but plays the same library I'd be less interested, but if it's the Master System we all know I'd want one.

Oh Brazil and your a$$-backwards taxation and tariff ideas. You've harmed your own citizens far more than you've helped them.

For anyone interested in the specifics, this guide explained the gargantuan ps4 prices in pretty simple terms (numbers have changed a bit since then, but the basic explanation is still valid for ps5 prices)

ID: h9glyw7

It's the same in a lot of poor countries. Basically corrupt or non-existent income tax collection leads to a few 'choke points' under which it's easy to generate cash for the gov - it's relatively easy to observe and tax imports. Usually goes hand in hand with a ton of corruption.

Lived in Latin America for the last 10 years and have seen this all around. From the US.

As a Turkish gamer i expect same thing for my country.

ID: h9ew0ds

Is turkey doing tax cuts as well? If not then I doubt it will lower

ID: h9f0jir

If Turkey decides to cut their crazy 112% tax sure. The reason this is happening for Brazil is that they lowered the tax, even though it's still super high.

ID: h9eviyv

This was due to a cut in taxes (because ‘the gamers’ are part of the political base of the bananas populist president, believe it or not), Sony just acted on it.

ID: h9fcoiq

Gamers and far right presidents, name a more iconic duo

ID: h9exwzc

Sure bro sony is about to slash prices just because you want it

ID: h9f04m9

I think what he meant is not that he expects but he hopes the price will go down.

ID: h9eyp99

Sure bro sony is about to slash prices just because you want it

Turkish economy is like Brazilian economy. Inflation very high and 1 Euro = 10 Turkish Liras .We buy a 70€ AAA game in every 3 months

9 : Anonymous2021/08/18 16:58 ID: h9ff36r

Nice, my dad was going to pay R$5000 for one last week and I told him to hold it.

ID: h9fribg

1 month ago I paid R$5500. You are wise, I am not.

10 : Anonymous2021/08/18 17:03 ID: h9ffswd

i don't understand why sony doesn't sell the dualsense charging station in brazil. every other ps5 accessory is available in brazil, but not the charging station. i've tried to google why is that, but to no avail

ID: h9fmrv7

Better for you, don't buy that gimmick, buy a good USB charger with multiple ports and charge anything you wanted with any cable type, faster, safer, better, cheaper.

11 : Anonymous2021/08/18 19:56 ID: h9g2z75

Nice, i don't regret paying the previous price though. I'd be so anxious trying to find a PS5 if I hadn't pre ordered it

12 : Anonymous2021/08/18 16:14 ID: h9f92fs

We need more, taxes here in Brazil are crazy af... We have one of the most expensive PS5s in the world. Being a gamer in Brazil is hardcore.

13 : Anonymous2021/08/18 16:27 ID: h9fas9l

É nóis carai

14 : Anonymous2021/08/18 14:37 ID: h9ew5h4

How many dollars or euros is that?

ID: h9ewrvd

Something around 850 USD for the disk version

ID: h9ex7rs

What and why

ID: h9fkg6n

1 US dollar $1 is about 5 brazilian reais R$5

15 : Anonymous2021/08/18 17:17 ID: h9fhohb

I remember being a gamer in brazil, the gov made it a complete nightmare

Here in the UK, I can have a ps5 at launch and get on average 3 fully priced games per month easily, there I used to have one fully priced game a year

16 : Anonymous2021/08/18 18:43 ID: h9ftaex

This is not what I subbed here for

17 : Anonymous2021/08/18 16:12 ID: h9f8qfo

But when it comes to selling games the price only goes higher, cause that's where they actually make money from

ID: h9fk905

Nice. You didn't bother knowing it's because of a tax cut in Brazil so it's just keeping with the status quo.

19 : Anonymous2021/08/18 20:01 ID: h9g3nhx

Doesn’t matter if there aren’t any units left to buy anyways

20 : Anonymous2021/08/18 20:06 ID: h9g4civ

Any country have it available at MSRP? I'm willing to bet a flight, purchase, and flight back would be cheaper than these scalper prices in the US.

21 : Anonymous2021/08/18 22:05 ID: h9gk2cr

Bro what kind of deals are you getting on air travel?

22 : Anonymous2021/08/18 20:31 ID: h9g7pbt

Meanwhile the only store in my country that has ps5 in stock is selling for 900€ because demand is high and they have literally 0 competition. sigh

23 : Anonymous2021/08/18 20:48 ID: h9ga33y

At first I thought it would be a impressive decrease...

I still see a lot of shops selling for R$6,999.99 ~ R$7,999.99...

The shop in which I bought for R$4,699.90 took 5 months to deliver, so... don't expect those prices to be reflected in the price you pay, most likely the shops will profit more...

24 : Anonymous2021/08/18 21:59 ID: h9gj81q

I'll wait for more price cuts thi, I can pay more than 3% of my mortgage with a Ps5 digital edition

25 : Anonymous2021/08/18 22:12 ID: h9gkxnz

Robux?

26 : Anonymous2021/08/18 18:32 ID: h9frqrb

That is not true.

27 : Anonymous2021/08/18 19:17 ID: h9fxs1i

In that case my friend is a liar.

28 : Anonymous2021/08/18 19:47 ID: h9g1s7l

Not defending the shitty minimum wage in Brazil but as a Brazilian living outside of Brazil, I can attest to the fact that people that don’t have a skill also make minimum wage. A high school diploma isn’t enough to get paid higher than the minimum wages here. You either put your life at risk or learn a skill to be compensated better.
