- This is a prototype for the original xbox
-
This was more a PR model than a prototype. They used it to run demos at GDC. Cost like $20,000 if I remember right?
ID: hgih2cvID: hgioxczThis was the devkit.
ID: hgip3qoCan confirm this. The oldest dev kits were just ATX style PCs. Eventually we had dev kits that looked like regular kits. They had some extra ports in them, and at least through 360, were completely unable to run retail discs due to the retail code locking the did. Apparently they didn’t trust devs with debug kits that had access. Probably smart.
I remember seeing this (no clue if there was only one or if they made a couple) floating around Red West campus and later on at Millenium, but it was always just a marketing unit. This picture looks like it was taken at the Microsoft Museum at the campus referred to as The Commons now.
ID: hgixccbWe are making a box
ID: hginxsmThis model was actually in Ninja Gaiden as an Easter egg
ID: hgirr1zI knew of this model, and I knew of the Ninja Gaiden easter egg, yet I never put the two together until now.
ID: hgj1zzgAnd also as a droppable item in Dead Or Alive 3 in survival mode which would unlock a new outfit for the character that picked it up!
ID: hgixi8aPer a quote on one of the exhibits in this museum:
"When first announced in early 2000, the mysterious chrome case, shown here, helped perpetuate the mystery - and the buzz. "We wanted to convey the newness and excitement of Xbox, to let gamers know they will enter a new world," proclaimed the press release."
Interestingly that quote appears attached to a translucent halo version of the console. The Chrome X has a different placard.
Here's a walkaround video I took last time I visited the Microsoft campus store.
Here's the tranluscent one, signed by Bill Gates
Here's the "first mouse"
The rest of the museum is pretty neat (if a bit small). It has a cool built out section and an esports team booth.
ID: hgixq9oStill cheaper than the launch price for the PS3

Reminds me of the THX logo
ID: hghfutsThe sound of death
ID: hgi4vauTHE AUDIENCE IS NOW DEAF
ID: hgi9v72Comments you can hear
ID: hgifkexdamn they made it worse. Ear bleed warning
ID: hgij8h4Sounded like an air raid siren to me as a kid. Opening up a PS2 game and hearing that and getting normalised, thought I was brave, lol.
-
It's the blacksmith version, it doubles as an anvil
-
Beautiful, but impractical. Its literally an X that's a Box.
ID: hghzmspActually just the opposite, it's supremely practical because if that's made of stainless steel then it could support your TV on it. This was before flat screens became the norm obviously.
ID: hgi42dtIIRC, it was machined out of solid billet aluminum. Prohibitively expensive, but there are no welds or seams on it. As a machinist, I'm glad I wasn't the one to make it.
-
You could find one in the 2nd or 3rd level of Ninja Gaiden.
ID: hgitanrYou could find one in the 4th chapter and I think like the 12th or 13th ones. 4th I know for certain because it's the alleyway with the windmill shuriken, latter is whatever chapter you're inside the military base in the zone with the tank.
ID: hgivkd4There's a prototype Xbox in DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball too.
-
An X-Box in the most literal sense.
I honestly think it looks kinda rad though. A bit big and bulky, but a neat idea.
ID: hgihr1lIt'd work better as a special edition or something though, can't imagine a lot of parents would've wanted a giant brushed aluminum X in their living room.
ID: hgi2b31Double it up as an end table.
ID: hgi7p3gIt's my X in a box!
-
Microsoft manager probably looked at this at thought "there's no fucking way we can produce 10 of these for the market"
ID: hgi7c8hToo much X not enough box, change it!
ID: hgij2zxmakes a box with a big x on it
oh wait, that's what actually happened i'm just now realizing...
-
Imagine stubbing your toe on that
ID: hghghkh"Girl, are you my pinky toe? Cause I wanna bang you on every piece of furniture in my house"
ID: hghhxed"Yea I am, because you can live without me."
ID: hgirxg7You want to bang your pinky toe on every piece of furniture in your house.

I bet this thing had amazing thermal properties. Check out the fins on the back!

Introducing….
The X X!
ID: hghi0p1Not to be confused with the XXX
-
I love xbox
-
God, it's so hideous!
I love it.
-
It's a little bland. They couldn't come up with anything flashier?
/s
ID: hgiozx9The next one will be an italicized X
-
It was literally an Xbox
-
More like Direct X 9.0
-
Looks like they were trying to advertise X-Men 2
-
Well that is an xbox
-
Ah.. the paperweight design.
-
I remember seeing this and always wondered where do you put the disc in?
-
No. This was a tradeshow gimmick. The original XBox prototype was a Mac tower with a custom graphics card and a Logitech controller. No joke.
Sauce: had one on my desk.

I was going to say, the actual prototypes probably look closer to the final product than that does.
Why have a big stupid case when you can just make a box?
