This is also just what I've heard, though maybe they cut the enemies for better pacing or things of that nature. Though, I've seen people happy that they're gone but in my opinion it takes away from the experience. I'm open to discussion though.

I always thought they got rid of giant bugscuz they were goofy
ID: hgici2oID: hgijl9aI find this bit of trivia hilarious. The team trying to snap pics and the spiders tearing around
ID: hgigghiYeah, it's pretty obvious they moved away from "animal but giant" because they were trying to be taken a bit more seriously as horror games. It is a little jarring to go from fighting horrifying zombies, then you go into a room and there's just...a big old normal spider.
If they were appealing to people's phobias, then Marguette(sp?) wouldn't exist, as she was very spiderlike and disturbing on many other levels.
ID: hgj5tykDon't forget RE 0 where you spend a big chunk of the game fighting zombie monkeys. You can try and give give a cool name like Eliminators all you want, but they're zombie monkeys.
ID: hgj2lv4Yeah. As an arachnophobe, Margaret was far more terrifying than any spider that’s been in these games. I don’t think they’re trying to not be scary. Otherwise they wouldn’t have made that thing in the doll house
ID: hgj7c06What about a room full of hundreds of massive but not giant spiders. Crawling all around and over as you have to avoid them while trying to push on to the next area?
ID: hgi6345the giant snake is cool as hell but i admit the spiders are kinda silly
ID: hgiejsxResident Evil 0 went overboard with the bugs and critters motif. By the time you were defeating an anime leech-man, it all seemed quite silly.
ID: hgig5lbI mean...yeah the entire fuckin' series is balls to the wall goofy, its just very hard to put one's thumb on where it is purposefully goofy and where it is unintentional.
-
I doubt phobias are the reason, probably more so that enemies like spiders and crows are a bit boring and uninspired outside of the first few games at this point
ID: hghjqb0Personally I prefer Spiders to dogs. I find dogs annoying to confront. I like Spiders for the same reason I like Lickers. They can hide in spots, making for interesting confrontation dynamics.
ID: hghlorrI think they mean their design specifically is boring; giant spider isn't really the most creative enemy design visually.
ID: hghy16yI think the issue is lack of insects at all, they are prime material for monsters, extra limbs dead eyes unfeeling etc.
ID: hgiuqosEh there are tons of insect or insect inspired monsters throughout the series though. Hell, 6’s C virus is literally “Chrysalid Virus” and nearly all of the mutations and enemies have insectoid parts and pieces. Every game I can think of besides Village (and even then Miranda has a spider-esque form) has at least one unique insect or insectoid inspired monster
ID: hghtktnAnd giant blobs are inspired how?
-
I just wish they'd do more zombie or mutant animals like in Outbreak. Also I don't believe phobias were the main reason as much as the fact that they've had those enemy types in almost every game and it's gotten stale.
ID: hghy3wcThey havent had spiders in a lot of recent games.
ID: hghyi3tBut they were only in RE0, 1-3 and maybe Code Veronica. That's not even half of the RE games available and none of them recent releases either.
4-8 and the Revelations games don't have spiders. They have spider-like enemies, but i'd rather actually see and fight a spider, not something standing in for one.
ID: hghypmmThat's a fair point. When I said that, I was including spider like enemies as well.
ID: hgizt2jRE: Survivor had spiders, same for umbrella/darkside chronicles
-
Didn’t they say they got rid of the giant spiders because they’re super annoying to animate in the RE Engine?
ID: hgi41k0MH Rise uses RE Engine and has a spider monster, although to be fair its attack method is... Unconventional
-
I’m an arachnophobe myself but I’ve always found it therapeutic to face my fears in games where I face arachnids. Whether it’s wasting all of my precious precious ammo on a spider I killed 6 minutes ago or summoning a low level deity to smite a random tarantula eating a deer it just feels amazing to u leash on them!
ID: hgi1cseComing from someone with thalassophobia myself, the Moreau section made me feel the same way. I assume it's the same for others with Del Lago in RE4 lol
ID: hgix67wsomeone with thalassophobia
As a fellow Thalassaphobe I can't recommend Subnautica enough. That games progression is LITERALLY conquering the sea, the fear.
ID: hgi71bcI hold John Goodman up as the exterminator in Arachnaphobia as my personal Spider Doomslayer of sorts. Everyone wants the good stuff that just melts spiders on contact.
ID: hgi7uzwExactly!!! Would’ve been great if he had a cameo in Eight Legged Freaks!
ID: hghsa6tI like this take!
-
I think it makes total sense. Arachnophobia is a very widespread condition and also spider enemies are played out.
-
Why you assume spiders are gone because of phobias? Its very unlikely since
a) spiders (though not large) are still present in RE7
b) spiders are removed from remakes alongside moth, crows and giant plants.
This makes me believe that it was more case of an art direction. Probably giant insects and plants were clashing with gritty, down to earth and realistic design of RE2make. This clash is very apparent in alligator scene in Leon's campaign which turns into arcade minigame and is a giant WTF moment.
And to your second point that arachnophobes shouldn't play RE franchise I think its stupid. I play those games since release of og RE2 and Im okay. I played Silent Hill games also when there were released and Im ok. The fact that I experience irrational fear of spiders doesnt mean Im more affraid of any other elements of those games than any other person. As the name of the phobia indicates, Im just like any other person when it comes to fear with only one exception: spider ;P
So while I never wanted any game to be "censored" for my specific fear, I also dont want anyone to gatekeep from me my favorite genre because of said fear 😛
ID: hgjfo70Agree with every word you said.
-
Erm. There's never been a reason given for the Spiders being cut. A lot of assumptions being made here, and people just looking for a reason to be mad, damn.
-
I've never heard that as a reason why they dropped certain enemies.
-
Giant Spiders (and big insects and the like) are the cheapest ways to get scares period. It will only scare people with the phobias like you said and do very little else for others. I would rather them make actual scary monsters than put something that I would put on the same level as a cheap jump scare.
-
Do you have a source for them being removed because of phobias? RE7 had a major bug section which forced you to see lots of spiders to progress.
-
Earth has 7.753 billion people.
Resident Evil 8 sold something like 4.5 million copies to date.
According to random Google search (I know, lol, but still), arachnophobia affects nearly 100 million people, just in the United States.
The entire franchise is catering to a minority of people.
If you say the game got away from its roots, no argument there. That already happened with RE 4-6, and even the reboots are significantly different from the originals. They really are.
Now, if Capcom decided not to have any monsters based on nonrecyclable styrofoam packing peanuts, I feel that might be going a bit far. But eh.
-
The thing about horror games, are story, atmosphere, graphics, characters etc. People aren't usually play them to get scared in general, and btw jump scare mechanics are poor way of scaring people. I don't get scared the same way when looking at the spider as playing a horror game. Because phobia isn't the same as being scared of something. In the end, people play games for fun. Spiders aren't fun for people with phobia.

I miss the days of fighting giant/slightly mutated animals… too many enemies now are basically just blobs
ID: hghxmejor mold, or jilted lovers,ex scientists.
ID: hgi0sr4Check off more bingo spaces for one big, giant arm, a giant tongue, or a jaw that separates 3 or more ways.
ID: hgipmzkSay what you want about resi 6. Its monsters were awesome. Though admittedly a lot were blobish.
-
My sollution is better.
Make it a toggle. You can turn off spiders and they are replaced by other enemies.
Problem solved. And everyone can enjoy the games.
ID: hgiixltThey did something like that in the game grounded except they turned into a ball or something like that
-
Arachnaphobe here, I have nothing to add but I would like to brag that I learned how to kill Black Tiger with my eyes shut. It's the only way I can play through remake 😛
-
Honestly, I don't believe they removed spiders because of phobias and probably did it for realism/scare factor because a giant tarantula is pretty ridiculous looking to anyone without Arachnophobia. Otherwise they'd remove all the bugs from recent games, those gross ass spiders from RE7, and Marge's spider form. I'm glad they moved away from animal/bug but giant thing. The Cerberus are FAR superior because they have a wicked cool design. Imagine if the Cerberus we're just normal dogs but double the size; it'd just look goofy to me.
Personally, I'm ok with them dumping those spiders as long as they don't get rid of the ones for Code Veronica for the inevitable remake. I never cared about tarantulas even as someone with Arachnophobia but the hairless motherfuckers are the ones that get me. Though they should shrink them all except the boss. Also, they should use the Drain Deimos as a baseline, having the spiders replace the moths in laying eggs inside people with an "Alien" type death scene or something. Honestly, I have many ideas for how they could successfully pull off giant spiders but I understand why they did it.
-
You're giving Capcom way too much credit. They're simply cutting corners to save time and money, they don't care about the player lol
-
I think it's more Capcom striking a balance over how valuable the spiders are versus how repellant they are to some players. I personally love the spiders but when I think of iconic RE monsters idk if theyre making top five or ten or something. For instance if there was some common place phobia that could be triggered from lickers or hunters? RE would probably stay the course and accept the losses cause they're not taking those out. Giant spiders have been in media since like The Hobbit which we are coming up on like 100 years for that soon lol. Hardly something that people see and think of exclusively RE. As far as I'm concerned I'd probably never be heartbroken by their exclusion unless they do another remake of 1 and they're missing. The spiders do truly contribute to the classic house of horror theme that game is based around and it would be a shame in that case imo.
-
I don't have arachnophobia but I am SO done with giant spiders in video games.
-
Lol because of phobias? Oh yeah capcom is worried about scaring the player lmao. Wtf?

They did try to implement them in game and they used real spiders for reference but they kept moving when they took photos of them.
