- Do you or do you not like Ethan winters? Personally he's my favorite protagonist.
-
I like him, he's not my favourite (Claire will always hold that spot) but I've always enjoyed Ethan.
Ik people ragged on him in RE7 for not having much depth as a character but I liked how he was a less serious protagonist and came off more annoyed and irritated at his surroundings rather than scared. And then RE8 came and he ascended to Chad status.
ID: hjeidiaID: hjfyvdkI'm replaying RE7 right now. I just defeated the dad ( I forgot his name) in the basement fight for the dog head. When the dad gets the chainsaw he says "Groovy" and in a panicked respose, Ethan says "that is not groovy." I had to stop playing so I could laugh. He's just so non chalant with everything. I love it.
ID: hjglcdmNo matter how you slice it, that is better than a protagonist seeing a zombie for the 1000th time and going “OMG WHAT IS THAT?!?”
ID: hjfom51I think his reactions were very realistic in that by having to choose a fight response (as opposed to flight), we probably would all respond similarly - pushing fear aside and using other emotions to cope with the situation.
ID: hjdjlgdI also like Claire
ID: hjdvffiAgree on the ascending. RE7 Ethan was meh. RE8 I liked him at the end of 8.
ID: hjfk1jzYou liked him dead?
ID: hjflmkaThe factory is the best moment of him getting fed up, when he is sent all the way to B5 and thinks he will need to climb up, his: not again! Doesn't sound like he doubts getting all the way up there but having to do it all over again...
-
He's pretty good, but no near as iconic as the Redfields, Leon, or Jill. I feel like Ethan is supposed to be the players avatar more than his own tbh.
ID: hjdvjs6well said, exactly why I don’t care for him as much as the others but the same reason I can understand why so many like him
-
Love him. Refreshing to see a protagonist fight solely for personal reasons rather than duty or justice.
-
He’s alright. Most of his interactions are him sounding spooked, swearing, or yelling. He feels 2 dimensional in that regard. Nothing special. I know he’s supposed to kind of be a blank slate to project ourselves on but that’s exactly how he felt for the most part until he has a daughter and then he’s mostly one liners mixed with “I want my family back” which is basically him in RE7 too except trade a baby for a moldy wife.
ID: hjehgectrade a baby for a moldy wife
No I don't think I will.
-
He's not that interesting for me to care about personally. Like I don't hate him but I can't say I like him either. His personalisation makes it so that it's really hard to care about him overall.
-
I don’t like Ethan Winters. He’s coarse and rough and irritating and he gets everywhere
ID: hjewigpNothing like an unexpected Attack of the Clones reference in the morning to go with my coffee.
ID: hjfbs66A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
-
He's my favorite of any game. Bar none.
Look at my username. I'd be his wife or bitch yeppers. He's amazing and dedicated
ID: hjej6xoWhat did I tell you about “yeppers”?
-
I liked him better in 8 than 7, but that was because I didn't care for 7 that much. He is fine, I guess? I'm not really a fan of insert characters for the player. They come across as bland and I usually can never identify with the generic married dude looking for wife/kid.
ID: hjds157I prefer him in 7. In 8, capcom couldn't decide between an everyman, and a full character, which turned me off a lot.
-
He's fine for me but I really love Leon, Jill and Claire. Even Chris is nice. Ethan is for me like a generic character not that memorable
-
I like him. I really enjoyed his character
-
Didn't like him in 7, started liking him in 8. He's okay.
-
Before RE8 Ethan was pretty boring and a bad character now he’s aight he’s still the lowest on my ranking of RE protagonists
-
Am I the only one that thinks Ethan kind of sounds like a dumbass in Resi8? I thought he was fine in 7 but something about his lines feels odd in 8.
Chris also acts strange. The two of them meet numerous times in Resi8 and there's not really any reason for the two of them to not stop and talk about what's going on, and yet, they never do. Basically just so the writers can keep things mysterious.
ID: hjdy7v8“ your out of your depth Ethan “
ID: hje36i6Chris has always been not great at actually sharing info, but jn 8 he was outright terrible at it
-
I’ve played through almost the entire series and I gotta say I love Ethan. He’s just an ordinary dude but he literally goes through hell twice in the name of family. If that’s not Moto, I don’t know what is.
-
I think it might partly be because he’s a first-person protagonist tbh.
You never see him, you don’t get that much of a dynamic between him and other characters. He’s more an agent for the player compared to other protagonists.
-
Honestly I don't get all the love and hype about him. But that is just me wondering if it's people that only started the series with RE7 and not the original.
-
Don't really care about him. He's just a pair of hands to me.
-
Protagonists as desserts at the buffet table:
Leon Kennedy - Tuxedo Mousse in a shot glass
Ada Wong - Rum Cake
Chris Redfield - Pistachio Candied Bacon
Claire Redfield - Red Velvet Cake
Jill Valentine - Freshly Baked Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie
Jake Wesker - Tres Leches Cake
Rebecca Chambers - Single serving fruit cocktail cup
Ethan Winters - Deep giant vat of vanilla pudding you have to serve yourself with a soup ladle, and you have to eat it for six years before you're allowed to have any of the other stuff again
ID: hjehj4kHow is Jill not an ice cream sandwich?
ID: hje3kcaEthan is more like homemade fudge brownies, it's not elaborate or exciting, but they're warm and simple and comforting and made from the heart.
ID: hjdrxy2Jill sounds delicious.
ID: hjehmizWhy isn’t Jill a cookie dough sandwich?
-
Nothing comes close to Jill for me, but I was like really young when I played resident evil 1 and that's what burns it into your mind as the greatest thing ever.
-
Defiantly not my favourite. Jill sandwich.
-
To be honest I don't like him at all.
Now to be fair, he is a great character and throughout the two games he's been through a LOT. Despite being a "normal" person (non trained, boulder punching, trained survival expert) he managed to get through two crazy inhuman situations. (trying not to spoil here)
That said I still don't like him and here's why:
Capcoms intention for a faceless protagonist was so the player can bond with Ethan more as if the player was Ethan himself. Yeah doesn't work with this one because...I'm a "simple human" and definately not identifying myself with Ethan especially after beating both games. To me, personally it feels forced and I can't connect with a faceless protagonist.
If the game was set in 3rd person or at LEAST we'd get to see his face from time to time I might have a better connection to him. I still wouldn't identify with him, but at least in my case, I would experience more empathy towards him instead of a "faceless doll".
Yeah my issue is the first person view, but mostly him "missing a face". Just doesn't work with me :/
-
He leaves me pretty much indifferent. I don't like particularly like or dislike him.
If we go for preferences, I hope to finally have Ada as the protagonist of her own game next.
-
I don't like or dislike him as he's a nothing character. Compared to other RE protagonists though, he is near on at the bottom of the list.
-
A nice distraction, that's about it. I hope the Winters family saga is finished (with the Village DLC) and the next RE features characters from 1, 2 or 3.
-
I kinda dislike him tbh. Some of his lines are just terrible but not in the charming B movie way of old resi.
-
Not a fan, personally. The vibes were just not hitting it for me.
-
Ethan in 7 was...meh. I liked his attitude in some scenes but overall he was super bland by design.
Ethan in Village is such an improvement, I love the guy. You can really how done with this bullshit he is and all he wants is his daughter back, nothing else matters. I mean, even if Miranda planed to destroy the world, Ethan would only give a shit because Rose lives in that world damnit!
-
Ethan is one of the laziest characters Capcom has ever made, he's a self insert character in 7, and his whole motive in Village had already been done by Barry in Revelations 2!
And it's extremely obvious just how much the story of 7 and Village are just ripped off from Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 1 respectively. He's just a bootleg Harry Mason and James Sunderland!
-
Meh.
-
I don’t like him personally

I Have to agree. His reactions in RE7 were actually spot on. A bit scared or freaked out at first but then he got jaded to it all and became very annoyed and irritated he wasn’t getting anywhere at first. When Chris finally showed up to save them he even chastised them: “What the Hell took you guys so long…?!”
