- Why is jake hated? Ik Wesker is iconic but he just wanted to take over the world because "mwahaha Evil god". Jake felt like a well written Anti Hero and troy baker was amazing
-
The only "viable" reason I've ever seen for the Jake hate is "oh lol yeah Wesker shacked up with some foreign chic in '91", which doesn't make any sense given his personality and attitude. But even then it's a thin line to walk. Even Albert Wesker was a young man once. :U
ID: hthj1tdID: hthvbxgHe definitely had that sexual drive. Can't imagine any person who keeps a photo of Rebecca in a basketball uniform to be not thinking about sex at all.
ID: hti2kd1Also the dude died, was resurrected by a virus and arguably degenerated in mental state by RE5, going from a guy who seemed to want to rule the roost from the shadows behind the BOW black market in 4 to full blown insanity eugenics in that game. I don't think RE5 Wesker could last 5 minutes posing as a convincing "good guy" STARS Captain.
An element of Wesker being able to be well... human and love and stuff before RE1 could add a nice layer of tragedy to his story.
ID: hthmy5q"You kneel before the cock of a god!"
ID: hti6augPre-mutation Wesker was every daughter's parent's worst nightmare.
ID: hthjtdpEXACTLY. I personally love Jake, and his backstory makes a lot of sense for a lot of reasons.
My headcanon, pieced together from official sources:
1991 was around the time Wesker and Birkin were at the Arklay facility; likely while there or just prior was when he was with the woman that would be Jake's mother. In one of the documents about the Umbrella Trials, there was mention of a woman named Sara who was going to speak out against Wesker, and she *mysteriously disappeared*. Details are sketchy at best because it was a translation of Japanese commentary.
Jake's mother fell ill, prompting him to strike out as a mercenary to find his fortune.
I put the pieces together and have decided that an Edonian woman named Sara Muller connects the dots for all those things 😀
ID: htimtdeIt didn't seem to be a one night stand though. According to the wiki Jake's mom was with Wesker to get out of her home country.
ID: htj27xw“Wait, Albert Wesker was never married! How could he have a son?”
“He happened to like hookers!”
ID: htknzpzIs he happened to like hookers a The Simpsons reference? I remember Frank Grimes Jr saying that line.
ID: hthvtevI mean, he did have that picture of 18 year old Rebecca in her small basketball uniform hidden in his desk. Pretty creepy but also indicates that the man has thirsts.
Also, I feel like dominant sexual relationships go hand in hand with people obsessed with power. I’m pretty sure Wesker and Excella were getting it on before he betrayed her.
ID: htizof9i think Wesker didnt betrayed Excella but rather she wasnt wortly of Uroboros
ID: hthlgznWesker is basically the Vergil of the REverse.
As much as he is going after power(or in this case world domination) he was young once too.
ID: hthyu43You just made me love Jake even more somehow since now I'm comparing him to Nero.
ID: htimhc4From what little info the game has it sounds like she was with him to get some sort of visa or entry into the states. It's not elaborated past her leaving back to Edonia. From the wiki:
[Jake] Muller was born in a single-parent household in Edonia. Previously an emigre to the United States, Muller's mother returned to her home country pregnant, having broken up with her partner Dr. Albert Wesker, then an Umbrella intelligence agent, who was unaware of his son.
Edit: in case you had to look up "émigré" like myself: a person who has left their own country in order to settle in another, typically for political reasons.
ID: htj00h0u mean economical reasons like those "refugees" at polish-belarus border?
ID: htisumfIf Dio managed to have a son I can buy Wesker having a son
ID: htj35f0DIO was a pansexual vampire. Literally put the “vamp” in “vampire”, in fact.
Top lad.
ID: htilkgwNot sure why they just didn't say he was some weird Wesker clone instead of him banging. Seems it would be more in line with Wesker.

He had the unfortunate luck of first appearing in what many people consider the worst main entry in the series. I think that game's stigma has kind of cursed him by default.
I was pretty indifferent to him. He had a solid VA though.
ID: htj18c1I think a counterpoint to this is Piers. Despite being a brand new character, IMO Piers was a far better written character than Jake even without a background like "Wesker's son". Piers was the best part of RE6 for me, and they changed a generic GI Joe, no-name sidekick to Chris into a character I was genuinely invested in at the end of their story and who I was genuinely sad to see die
I don't hate Jake, but I think he feels a bit like a 14 year old's edgelord fantasy written into a game, and his too cool arrogant attitude feels out of place. Leon is a bit cocky, sure, but it's played off as part corny and not too overdone. Wesker is arrogant, but it's a trait that lends itself well to his egomania. Jake is arrogant and cocky, but then it feels like it has no merit, and doesn't add to his character in a meaningful way other than a power fantasy.
ID: htj6fc3Controversial opinion but I think Chris should've died at the end of RE6 and had Piers continue his legacy. Wesker died in the previous game so the story arc of their rivalry was done. If not Piers, Jill could take over Chris's involvement in RE7 and RE8
-
I don't hate him. I just like to hate on him for being resident evil Eminem
ID: hti4ix0Yall act like you never seen a white person before
-
I don't hate him but he felt very generic/forgettable.
Now his father, Wesker was great but in a fun/corny way. He was like a old fashioned mustache twirling villain. I loved the way he said "CHRIS!" In RE5
-
I don't remember a thing about him except that he had an edgy lame backstory. And that his blood was the cure or some ridiculous trope. Going by the picture he looks like every male video game character from that era and what every 12 year old boy thinks a cool badass looks like.

im playing through RE6 with my friend atm, and punching stuff as Jake always has me laughing like a giddy idiot. I love this dude he's like Resident Evil's Red Hood
ID: hthit8iDude's melee moves are some of the best gameplay mechanics in the series from an objective standpoint. So fun
ID: hthkcgybro i love having my friend playing sherry shoot stuff while im running around like a little goblin punching people's knees its great

My opinion, Jake and Sherry both fell into the same problem in RE6: they were maguffins instead of real characters.
Important to the plot, but character wise neither was really written that interesting. Part of this is due to the difference between western and eastern screenwriting, and part of it is due to the fact that neither character was used that well.
Sherry Birkin comes back to the series finally as an adult, and I can barely remember anything about her from RE6 other than she and Jake are put into a lot of contrived situations to force them into becoming a couple. He's really strong and she's got super healing.
They didn't really have anything interesting to say as characters though. Sure Jake goes on his journey from being a selfish money hungry mercenary to an anime hero and Sherry is kind of Claire jr now.
Not a lot of interesting conversations between the though, which is disappointing because due to the more soap opera nature of Jakes story you'd think they'd try to put more of this there, but its just not present.
Sherry grew up to be a boring Claire replica who has super healing, Jake turned into an anime hero at the end and the impact of the two for me wasn't present. It wasn't as bad as Claire and Steve, but I really dont like it when RE tries to do the tragic lovers schtick, Capcom hasn't been able to ever pull this off and it gets in the way of whats happening in the story.
Combine this with RE6 being the worst of the post RE4 games and you have a so-so character we just meet given an incredible importance and he's not written very well and his own story is an over the top action based soap opera and the more memorable aspect is the giant monster he's able to smack around.
It really felt like a degeneration to RE storytelling from game one to me, but remember I am a cynical fan of the older games :/
-
The best way I can describe him is "Inconsistent". He feels like a mash up of fan fiction ideas that don't cohesively fit together. Ironically, I actually think Sherry was handled far better, even though the departure from her previous role is so significant.

troy baker was amazing
Such a shame how he is now 🙁
-
His character developement started around the end of the game and unfortunately we will most likely never see him again

Please don’t downvote just because I’m being negative. I get everyone on this sub likes 6 but I wanted to answer OP’s question.
His cooler-than-you persona that he carried throughout the came was just grating imo, and he treated everyone around him like shit. It’s hard to feel sympathetic for him when he acted like an asshole to everyone around him, with the only exception being the girl he wanted to bang.
•His sarcastic jokes were annoying and completely mistimed. In RE4 Leon was a wisecracker, but he knew when to take stuff seriously. On the other hand, Jake never shut up, and his shit was wayyy less funny that Leon. He just seems like an insecure dick. Leon is the guy at the party who’s naturally charismatic, meanwhile Jake is the guy who always makes the jokes a bit too mean but laughs at them anyways.
•The way he treated Chris and Leon too irked me. I get Jake is suppose to be headstrong, but anytime he met them in the campaign he only ever spit venom at them. Like Sherry was open about Leon being her surrogate father, and when they finally meet Jake glares at him like he think’s Leon is planning something? Why? And the way he treated Chris is even worse too. That whole cutscene where he points a gun to Chris’ head was stupid. Chris is a war hero who literally saved the world by killing wesker, and this was after Wesker kidnapped Chris’ life partner and tortured her for years. And despite all that, Chris only ever treated Jake and Sherry nicely. Jake is no way justified in calling Chris out like and acting like he is some sort of monster, just because the mass murdering bio-terrorist happened to be Jake’s deadbeat dad. He even told Sherry he was going to let Chris and Piers die even though Sherry openly told him she was worried about them.
•The worst thing about Jake though that really irked me is the way he treated Sherry throughout the story. Yeah, he saved her and they had bonding experiences whatever, but throughout most of the story Jake was either a dick to her or he bossed her around. At one point Sherry tries to tell Jake he’s nothing like Wesker, just trying to be nice, and Jake immediately flings it back at her and basically says she must be a monster too. He apologizes for that later… but only after Sherry reveals personal information about her childhood trauma. Jake knows Sherry is kind off a rookie, and because of that he just bosses her around the whole campaign and tries to flirt with her in the middle of a worldwide crisis. Sherry was initially talkative at first, but by the end of the campaign she just follows Jake’s orders obediently - not a good look considering how much a dick Jake was to her. His relationship with Sherry was weird, and he just put her down everytime she said anything unless he needed her for something or wanted to flirt. At least, that’s the vibe I got from it.
Overall, he just gave off narcissistic, egotistical, and selfish vibes. He wasn’t very cool or badass, he just seemed like an insecure man-baby who only ever thought of himself. That’s the reason people dislike Jake, while they love Ethan. Ethan was a dedicated husband and father who put himself on the line multiple times to save his family, whereas Jake was just a deadbeat.
ID: hti85qoJake is written exactly like an 11 year old child just found out what an anti hero is and thinks it's the coolest thing ever.
ID: htilwkcOmg finally someone mentioning how he treats sherry! hes such an asshole to her and I hated how weirdly jealous he got whenever she spoke to ANY other male main character, especially Leon (Ew) early on in the campaign.
-
I think people hate him not because he is bad but because he came out of nowhere, which is bad writing , you don’t suddenly bring a character that is the son of the previous main villain without even mentioning him once ..it’s like capcom just want a dramatic story with chris and character having super power because… you know whisker son Don’t get me wrong i love jake and he is a great and fun character to me with his sarcasm …yet the “whisker son” is the issue
-
Probably going to be downvoted to hell, but I just find his whole story weak, to say the least. He's not that bad as a character, I do like the idea of Wesker's son+meeting Chris, but I got the feeling the idea was thrown in there just for the sake of "GASP Wesker'S SON?!"
To me, he just didn't felt like a character they were going to use again from the very beginning of his campaign.
-
Huh, is there anyone that Troy Baker HASN’T voiced at this point? Petition for the next RE game to be fully voiced by Troy. And I mean fully. Zombie moan, that’s a Troy. Car explosion, that’s a Troy. Running water from a tap? You’d better believe that’s a Troy
ID: hthmidkTroy baker and Nolan North voice every character in fiction at this point
ID: hti2rj4Don’t forget Laura Bailey. She’s everywhere and for good reason
ID: hthq8qlAnd the game is produced, written, directed and programmed by Hideo Kojima.
-
I think he is just a bit bland.
So maybe that is why people hate him?
He isn't too bad
-
Nothing about 6 was “well written”.
-
I mean he’s just a cookie cutter edgy badass that was pretty much the standard for male video game characters at the time. He doesn’t really stand out to me.
-
I agree with this. Everything in 6 gets a lot of flack from the fan base (a lot for good reason), but I have a soft spot for it and Jake was one of the best parts of the game. I don’t know if we’ll ever see him again though with how much people hate that game
-
He was wasted in a terrible spot in the game. People must have assumed it was Jake and not the weird action setting he was in.
-
Reeks of edgy anti hero in games. Characters like him and Starkiller are just annoying to me at this point
-
because cringe edglord attitudes aren't compelling character traits. I could give my shit a tragic backstory, it doesnt mean it automatically makes my shit a good character.
-
He was born out of a pretty burnt out trope in a game that had an incredibly poor narrative to begin with and despite being Wesker's son he was close to being a filler character.

"Wow, what a mansion!"
we only ever see Wesker as cold and calculating after RE1, but pre-1 it makes sense that he could have had more human desires such as sex or money. A one night stand isn't out of the question
